Electrified actuation, not vehicle volume, sets the pace for brake caliper value through 2035
Radial Insights sizes the automotive brake calipers market at USD 12.46 Billion in 2025, rising to USD 12.98 Billion in 2026 and USD 18.77 Billion by 2035, a CAGR of 4.18% for 2025-2035. Unit demand tracks vehicle output, but value per caliper is climbing as parking brake motors and full electromechanical actuation move into the caliper body.
The scope covers disc brake calipers for passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, heavy commercial vehicles with air disc brakes, and powered two-wheelers, sold both to vehicle makers and in the aftermarket as new or remanufactured units. A caliper here includes the housing, pistons, seals and, where fitted, an integrated electric parking brake actuator or electromechanical brake motor. Brake pads, rotors, drum brakes, master cylinders, electronic stability control units and brake-by-wire control modules mounted away from the wheel are excluded.
World motor vehicle production rose 3.9% to 96.4 million units in 2025, according to OICA, and nearly all new light vehicles carry at least two disc brake calipers, most carry four. That steady base explains why the hydraulic core grows slowly. The value shift comes from three sources: electronic parking brake calipers replacing cable systems, aluminum and multi-piston fixed calipers spreading from premium cars into mainstream EVs, and the first electromechanical brake (EMB) calipers entering series production in China in 2026.
Electromechanical calipers are the fastest-growing segment at a 38.65% CAGR from a very small base, helped by China's revised passenger car braking standard GB21670-2025, effective January 1, 2026. Africa is the fastest region at 5.30% a year, while Asia Pacific (APAC) holds 46.20% of 2025 revenue.
The automotive brake calipers market also faces price pressure from carmakers, softer European production and the shift of braking work to regenerative systems in EVs, which lengthens replacement cycles in the aftermarket.

Electromechanical and EPB calipers add value far faster than the hydraulic base
Radial Insights analyzes the automotive brake calipers market across five dimensions. The spread of growth rates is wide because a mature, high-volume hydraulic business sits next to new electrified designs that carry more content per wheel. All rates below are CAGR for 2025-2035.
| Dimension | Segment | CAGR 2025-2035 |
|---|---|---|
| By Caliper Design | Floating (Sliding) Calipers | 3.72% |
| By Caliper Design | Fixed (Opposed-Piston) Calipers | 5.46% |
| By Actuation Type | Hydraulic | 2.41% |
| By Actuation Type | Hydraulic with Integrated EPB | 6.38% |
| By Actuation Type | Electromechanical (EMB) | 38.65% |
| By Material | Cast Iron | 2.86% |
| By Material | Aluminum | 6.12% |
| By Vehicle Type | Passenger Cars | 4.06% |
| By Vehicle Type | Light Commercial Vehicles | 4.31% |
| By Vehicle Type | Heavy Commercial Vehicles | 3.88% |
| By Vehicle Type | Two-Wheelers | 5.12% |
| By Sales Channel | OEM | 4.37% |
| By Sales Channel | Aftermarket New | 3.94% |
| By Sales Channel | Remanufactured | 3.21% |
By caliper design: fixed calipers outgrow floating units as EVs gain weight and power
Floating calipers, with one or two pistons on the inboard side, remain the volume standard on mainstream cars and grow at 3.72%. Fixed opposed-piston calipers grow at 5.46% because heavier battery electric vehicles and performance trims need higher clamping force and better heat handling. Akebono's display of a 10-pot caliper for high-performance cars at the Japan Mobility Show in late 2025 shows how far piston counts are rising at the top end.
By actuation type: EMB is the breakout segment, EPB the steady value builder
Plain hydraulic calipers grow at only 2.41%, close to vehicle production growth minus price erosion. Calipers with integrated electronic parking brakes grow at 6.38% as cable parking brakes disappear from new platforms; ZF's Wuhan plant, which started a new line in October 2025, now builds its sixth EPB generation. Electromechanical calipers, which replace hydraulic pressure with an electric motor at each wheel, grow at 38.65% from a tiny 2025 base. China's GB21670-2025 gave them a legal basis from January 2026, and Chinese suppliers such as Orient-Motion, Jiongyi, Watson Rally and BWI Group target series supply during 2026.
By material: aluminum gains on weight and corrosion
Cast iron calipers grow at 2.86% and still dominate floating designs on cost. Aluminum calipers grow at 6.12% because each kilogram of unsprung mass saved improves range and ride, and because aluminum resists the corrosion that seizes rarely used calipers on EVs that brake mostly through regeneration. Brembo's dedicated aluminum caliper plant in Escobedo, Mexico, sized at about 2 million units a year, reflects this shift.
By vehicle type: two-wheelers and vans edge ahead of passenger cars
Passenger cars, the largest buyer group, grow at 4.06%. Light commercial vehicles grow at 4.31% as e-vans add EPB calipers and heavier payload ratings. Heavy commercial vehicles grow at 3.88%, supported by the continued switch from drum to air disc brakes in Europe and North America. Two-wheelers grow at 5.12% as ABS rules and premium motorcycle demand in India and Southeast Asia lift caliper content.
By sales channel: OEM grows faster as content per vehicle rises
OEM supply grows at 4.37% because new electrified calipers enter through new vehicle programs. New aftermarket calipers grow at 3.94%, helped by an aging fleet in the United States and Europe, while remanufactured units grow at 3.21% as caliper housings with integrated motors become harder to rebuild economically.

Market Dynamics
Market Trends
China moves first on electromechanical braking
China issued GB21670-2025, its revised technical requirements for passenger car braking systems, in May 2025, with effect from January 1, 2026. The standard defines an electrical transmission braking system and opens the door to calipers driven only by electric motors. By February 2026, Chery's Exeed EX7 had been announced as the first mass-production model using EMB, and BWI Group had announced dual-motor EMB systems for Kaiyi and U Power platforms. In March 2026, Wuhan's Economic and Technological Development Zone announced plans to speed up a ZF EMB caliper production line at its local plant. Radial Insights expects China to account for most EMB caliper volume through 2030.
Electronic parking brakes become standard equipment
In October 2025, ZF launched production at a new plant in Wuhan for its sixth-generation electronic parking brake, adding to a site that has built more than 70 million caliper sets since 2011. EPB calipers integrate a small motor and gearbox on the rear caliper and replace cables, levers and handbrake consoles, which frees cabin space and enables automatic hill hold. Most new platforms launched in China, Europe and North America in 2025 used EPB calipers as standard.
Performance and multi-piston designs move downmarket
At the Japan Mobility Show from October 31 to November 9, 2025, Akebono exhibited an opposed-piston 10-pot caliper for high-performance cars, a 4-pot caliper with an integrated electric parking brake and a new 4-pot rally caliper. Heavier EVs with high torque need fixed calipers with larger pads, and carmakers increasingly use painted multi-piston calipers as a visible styling cue on mainstream trims.
Specialists diversify beyond brakes
Brembo completed its acquisition of suspension maker Öhlins from Tenneco in early 2025, raising its net financial debt to EUR 778.6 million at the end of the first quarter of 2025. The move gives the leading caliper specialist a broader chassis offer just as brake, suspension and steering control are being integrated into software-defined corner modules.
Restraints and Challenges
Weak European and North American production
OICA data show European vehicle production fell 0.8% to 17.2 million units in 2025 and production in the Americas fell 2.1% to 18.74 million, while Asia Pacific rose 7.6% (OICA, April 2026). Western caliper plants with high fixed costs therefore face lower utilization. Brembo reported that first-quarter 2025 revenue fell 4.7% to EUR 957 million, with car sales down 5.1% and commercial vehicles down 13.2%.
Regenerative braking reduces wear and replacement demand
Battery electric vehicles do much of their stopping through the motor, so pads, rotors and calipers last longer. That lowers aftermarket caliper replacement rates over time, and corrosion from rare use becomes the main failure mode. Radial Insights estimates that the EV share of the parc trims about 0.4 points from aftermarket caliper growth each year by the early 2030s.
EMB safety validation and cost
Removing hydraulic backup places all braking on electrical power and software. Suppliers must prove fail-operational performance under ISO 26262, redundant power supplies and fast response times; Watson Rally, for example, cites an 80 ms response target. Chinese suppliers quote EMB system costs of around RMB 3,488 per vehicle, still above conventional hydraulic setups, and Western carmakers are waiting for regulators outside China to confirm approval paths.
New emissions rules shift design priorities
Euro 7, set by Regulation (EU) 2024/1257, limits brake particle emissions to 7 mg/km for most cars and 3 mg/km for battery electric cars, applying to new types from November 29, 2026 and to all new cars from the end of November 2027 (EUR-Lex). Low-drag calipers, better pad retraction and enclosed designs help compliance, but development and testing costs fall on suppliers before any price premium is secured.
Growth Drivers
Rising content per caliper from EPB and EMB
An EPB caliper adds a motor, gear set and wiring to a rear caliper and typically carries a significantly higher price than a plain hydraulic unit, while an EMB caliper adds motors, sensors and power electronics at every corner. ZF's new Wuhan EPB line, opened in October 2025, and its planned EMB line show where tier-1 investment is going. China's GB21670-2025, effective January 2026, gives EMB a regulatory route in the world's largest vehicle market, which produced 34.53 million vehicles in 2025. Radial Insights estimates that higher electrified content adds about +1.6% to the market's yearly growth through 2035, the largest single driver.
EV and heavier vehicle demand
The IEA counted more than 20 million electric cars sold in 2025, about one quarter of global car sales, and expects about 23 million in 2026. Battery packs add several hundred kilograms, and many EVs and large SUVs need larger fixed or multi-piston calipers on the front axle plus EPB calipers on the rear. Aluminum calipers also gain because they save unsprung weight and resist corrosion. Brembo's EUR 438 million of capital expenditure in 2025, above its EUR 400 million plan, reflects investment in this higher-value mix. We attribute roughly 1.1 points of the 4.18% CAGR to heavier and electrified vehicles.
Growing vehicle output and fleet age in emerging markets
OICA reports that world production grew 3.9% to 96.4 million vehicles in 2025, with Asia Pacific above 61% of output and India at 6.49 million units. India's record fiscal 2025-26 domestic sales of more than 4.6 million passenger vehicles and over 1 million trucks and buses widen both OEM and replacement demand. African new vehicle sales rose 22% in 2025 to 1.29 million units. Meanwhile, the average age of cars in the United States and Europe keeps rising, which supports new and remanufactured aftermarket calipers from suppliers such as Brake Parts Inc, which keeps adding Raybestos caliper part numbers. Radial Insights credits volume and fleet-age effects with around 1.3 percentage points of annual growth.
Opportunities
Corner modules and brake-by-wire packages
Suppliers that combine EMB calipers, wheel speed sensing and control software into a single corner module can capture more value per wheel and simplify vehicle assembly. BWI Group, ZF and Chinese start-ups are all pursuing this route, and partnerships with steering suppliers point toward full chassis-by-wire.
Low-emission and corrosion-resistant designs for Euro 7
Calipers designed for minimal residual drag, better sealing and corrosion resistance on EVs will be needed for Euro 7 compliance from November 2026. Aftermarket brands can also sell premium coated calipers to EV owners whose brakes seize from rare use.
Asia Pacific (APAC) supplies nearly half of caliper revenue and most of the new EMB demand
Asia Pacific (APAC)
Asia Pacific (APAC) represented 46.20% of the automotive brake calipers market in 2025, about USD 5.76 Billion, and is forecast to reach USD 9.30 Billion by 2035 at a 4.91% CAGR. China produced 34.53 million vehicles in 2025, including 16.63 million new energy vehicles, and is the launch market for EMB calipers under GB21670-2025. India produced 6.49 million vehicles and adds strong two-wheeler caliper demand, while Japan hosts Akebono, ADVICS and Hitachi Astemo.
North America
North America accounted for 21.40% of 2025 revenue, about USD 2.67 Billion, and is expected to reach USD 3.73 Billion by 2035 at a 3.40% CAGR. Large pickups and SUVs carry heavy-duty calipers, and North America has one of the largest caliper aftermarkets, served by Raybestos, Cardone and other new and remanufactured brands. Brembo's Escobedo, Mexico plant, with capacity of about 2 million aluminum calipers a year, supplies regional carmakers.
Europe
Europe held 22.70% of the market in 2025, worth about USD 2.83 Billion, and is forecast at USD 3.88 Billion by 2035, a 3.20% CAGR. European vehicle production slipped 0.8% to 17.2 million units in 2025, but Europe leads on premium fixed calipers and on air disc brakes for trucks, and Euro 7 brake particle limits from November 2026 will push low-drag caliper designs across the region.
Latin America
Latin America took 4.60% of 2025 revenue, about USD 573.16 Million, rising to USD 856.61 Million by 2035 at a 4.10% CAGR. Brazil and Argentina account for most Latin America demand, and Brembo reported 6.1% revenue growth in South America in the first quarter of 2025 even as other regions declined.
Middle East
The Middle East held 2.90% of 2025 revenue, about USD 361.34 Million, and is forecast to reach USD 555.80 Million by 2035 at a 4.40% CAGR. Turkey's vehicle and component exports and the large SUV fleet in the Gulf states, where heat and high speeds raise caliper wear, support Middle East demand.
Africa
Africa represented 2.20% of the market in 2025, about USD 274.12 Million, and is set to reach USD 459.44 Million by 2035, the fastest regional CAGR at 5.30%. Africa's new vehicle sales rose 22% to 1.29 million units in 2025, and an old, largely imported used car fleet sustains replacement caliper demand in Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa.

Primary Interview Insights
When will EMB calipers reach Western platforms?
Brake engineers at European and US carmakers told us they are watching Chinese EMB launches closely but expect their own series programs only after 2028. They want regulators to confirm approval paths and at least one full winter of fleet data first.
Where is caliper pricing heading?
Suppliers said hydraulic caliper prices face annual reductions of about 1% to 3% from carmakers. They offset this through EPB and aluminum content, which buyers accept as value-added features.
How is the EV fleet changing caliper replacement?
Distributors in North America said EV calipers fail more often from corrosion and seized slides than from wear. They expect demand per vehicle to fall but average selling prices to rise as EPB units dominate the rear axle.
Are fleets still switching to air disc brakes?
Fleet managers said air disc brakes are now the default on new tractors in Europe and increasingly in North America, mainly for shorter stopping distances and easier pad changes.
What is the biggest barrier to EMB volume?
Founders told us cost and functional safety certification are the main hurdles, and that winning one high-volume carmaker program in 2026 would decide which suppliers survive.
