Automotive air springs are shifting from a truck and bus product to a passenger EV product, led by Chinese suppliers

Radial Insights sizes the automotive air springs market at USD 6.18 Billion in 2025, growing to USD 6.54 Billion in 2026 and USD 10.96 Billion by 2035 at a 5.90% CAGR. Passenger car air suspension, once limited to luxury models, is now standard on many Chinese electric SUVs, and that change sets the pace for the whole market.

An air spring is a rubber bellows, usually fabric-reinforced natural rubber or chloroprene, clamped between metal or composite end plates and filled with compressed air. It replaces or supplements a steel coil or leaf spring and lets the suspension adjust ride height and stiffness to the load. Heavy trucks, trailers and city buses have used air springs for decades; the growth now comes from cars, where the springs are paired with compressors, valves and height sensors in a full air suspension system.

Our scope covers air spring units for road vehicles sold to vehicle makers and to the aftermarket: convoluted (bellows), rolling lobe and sleeve types for passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, heavy trucks, buses and trailers. Values are stated in USD Billion at the air spring or air strut assembly level. We exclude compressors, electronic control units and shock absorbers sold separately, as well as rail, industrial and seat air springs.

Battery electric vehicles are the fastest growing propulsion segment at 10.40% CAGR, and sleeve air springs are the fastest type at 7.80%. Asia Pacific is the fastest growing region at 7.40%, because Chinese EV brands such as Li Auto, ZEEKR, BYD and Avatr offer air suspension on mid-priced models.

Supply is also changing. In China, KH Automotive, Tuopu and Baolong together held 90.8% of passenger car air suspension fitments from January to May 2026, while Continental agreed in July 2026 to sell its ContiTech group sector to Lone Star Funds for an enterprise value of EUR 4.0 billion.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Chinese suppliers have taken over their home passenger car market

From January to May 2026, KH Automotive supplied 219,660 passenger car air suspension sets in China, a 35.2% share, followed by Tuopu with 188,869 sets (30.3%) and Baolong with 157,818 sets (25.3%), according to Gasgoo. Vibracoustic and AUMOVIO held 3.6% and 3.0%. KH Automotive had delivered more than 1 million air suspension sets by September 2025 across more than 27 models for Li Auto, VOYAH, ZEEKR, BYD and Avatr.

Air suspension is spreading from luxury cars to electric pickups and SUVs

Vibracoustic launched a single-chamber front and rear air spring system for a premium electric pickup in April 2025, with about 2 inches of ride-height adjustment for a truck rated to tow 10,000 lb. Electric pickups and large SUVs need load leveling for towing and adjustable height for range, which pushes air springs into segments that used steel coils.

Ownership of legacy suppliers is changing

Continental signed an agreement in July 2026 to sell its entire ContiTech group sector, a long-time air spring producer for trucks, buses and cars, to Lone Star Funds for an enterprise value of EUR 4.0 billion plus up to EUR 250 million in earn-outs, with closing expected by the end of 2026. In August 2025 Continental had already agreed to sell the ContiTech Original Equipment Solutions unit to Regent. Buyers expect new owners to focus on profitable truck and aftermarket lines.

Aftermarket suppliers are widening their air suspension ranges

Air Lift Company released the LoadLifter 5000 double-bellows air spring kit for the 2025 Toyota 4Runner in April 2026, rated for up to 5,000 lb of load leveling. Arnott launched P-3880 and P-5182 air suspension compressors for Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, BMW X5 and Rolls-Royce models in May 2026. As the first wave of air-sprung SUVs ages, replacement demand for struts, bellows and compressors is rising.

Restraints and Challenges

Weak truck and trailer cycles in North America and Europe

EU truck registrations fell 6.2% to 307,460 units in 2025, with heavy trucks down 5.4%, according to ACEA. US trailer net orders were 13,000 in November 2025, 37% lower than a year earlier. SAF-Holland reported 2025 sales of EUR 1,734.4 million, down 7.6%, and expects North American trailer and Class 8 demand to stay subdued in 2026.

Price pressure from Chinese system suppliers

Chinese suppliers held more than 90% of their home passenger car air suspension market in early 2026 and are pushing system prices down. Tuopu has about 1.2 million sets a year of air suspension capacity. Lower prices widen adoption but squeeze margins for Western suppliers trying to win Chinese and export programs.

Durability and repair costs deter some buyers

Air springs wear as the rubber bellows flexes and ages, and leaks in older luxury cars lead to costly repairs. Some owners convert to coil springs rather than replace a full air strut, which caps aftermarket growth for passenger cars and creates warranty risk for OEMs offering air suspension on mass-market models.

Rubber and fabric input costs

Air spring bellows use natural rubber or chloroprene with nylon or polyester cord. The EU Deforestation Regulation, which applies to natural rubber from 30 December 2026 for large companies, adds traceability costs, and the suspension of a major US chloroprene plant in 2025 tightened that supply chain.

Growth Drivers

Chinese EV brands are making air suspension a mid-market feature

China built 34.53 million vehicles in 2025, according to CAAM, and new energy vehicles took a growing share. Chinese brands use air suspension to differentiate electric SUVs and MPVs: KH Automotive supplies more than 27 models, and the Gasgoo ranking counted about 624,000 passenger car air suspension sets fitted by the top five suppliers in China in just the first five months of 2026. Each set carries four air springs or air struts. Tuopu's chassis systems revenue reached CNY 8.72 billion in 2025. Radial Insights credits this driver with about +1.6% of yearly market growth, the largest single contribution.

Electric and low-floor buses depend on air springs

Every low-floor city bus uses air springs so the vehicle can kneel at stops and carry varying passenger loads. EU bus registrations rose 7.5% to 38,238 units in 2025, and 23.8% of them were electric, according to ACEA. Electric buses are heavier than diesel buses because of their batteries, which increases air spring load ratings and replacement frequency. Transit agencies in Europe, China and Latin America continue to order zero-emission fleets. We estimate bus demand lifts the CAGR by roughly +0.5% a year.

Truck parc growth and longer vehicle lives support replacement sales

China's heavy truck sales rose about 26% to 1.137 million units in 2025, the highest in four years. US Class 8 net orders reached 42,684 in December 2025, the strongest month of the year, and about 224,000 for the full year, according to ACT Research. Fleets keeping trucks longer during weak freight markets buy more replacement air springs: aftermarket business made up 39.7% of SAF-Holland's 2025 sales. Firestone Airide and Hendrickson serve this replacement channel. Radial Insights puts the contribution of truck and trailer replacement at close to +0.4% of growth each year.

Opportunities

Air struts for electric pickups and large SUVs in North America

Electric pickups and three-row SUVs need load leveling for towing and adjustable ride height for efficiency. Vibracoustic's 2025 electric pickup program shows OEM interest, and aftermarket kits from Air Lift Company widen the installed base for future replacement.

Smart air springs with integrated height and pressure sensing

Air springs with built-in height sensors and pressure monitoring allow predictive maintenance for truck fleets and smoother control in cars. Suppliers that combine bellows, sensors and valves into one module can sell higher-value assemblies to OEMs.

Asia Pacific leads automotive air spring demand and grows fastest on Chinese EV fitments

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) holds a 41.80% share of the automotive air springs market in 2025, worth USD 2.58 Billion. The APAC market reaches USD 5.27 Billion by 2035 at a 7.40% CAGR, the fastest regional rate. China is the engine: the country built 34.53 million vehicles in 2025, heavy truck sales rose about 26% to 1.137 million units, and KH Automotive, Tuopu and Baolong held 90.8% of local passenger car air suspension fitments in early 2026.

North America

North America accounts for a 24.60% share in 2025, or USD 1.52 Billion, rising to USD 2.41 Billion by 2035 at a 4.70% CAGR. North American demand rests on Class 8 trucks and trailers, with about 224,000 Class 8 net orders in 2025 according to ACT Research, and US vehicle production of 10.24 million units per OICA. Firestone Airide, Hendrickson and Air Lift Company are major local suppliers, and electric pickups add new passenger fitments.

Europe

In 2025, Europe takes a 25.10% share, worth USD 1.55 Billion, and reaches USD 2.43 Billion by 2035 at a 4.60% CAGR. European demand fell with truck registrations, which declined 6.2% to 307,460 units in 2025, but bus registrations rose 7.5% to 38,238 units. European vehicle production was about 17.2 million units in 2025, down 0.8%, and premium German brands remain the largest users of passenger car air suspension in the region.

Latin America

In 2025, Latin America holds a 4.30% share, or USD 0.27 Billion, and grows to USD 0.44 Billion by 2035 at a 5.10% CAGR. Latin American demand comes from Brazil's truck and bus industry and Mexico's truck and trailer plants that supply the United States. Brazilian bus body builders fit air suspension on most intercity coaches, and urban fleets in Santiago, Bogota and Sao Paulo are adding electric buses.

Middle East

The Middle East has a 2.50% share in 2025, worth USD 0.15 Billion, rising to USD 0.26 Billion by 2035 at a 5.30% CAGR. Middle East growth comes from coach and bus fleets for public transport and pilgrim travel in Saudi Arabia, from luxury SUV sales in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, and from heavy trucks serving construction projects.

Africa

In 2025, Africa accounts for a 1.70% share, or USD 0.11 Billion, and reaches USD 0.17 Billion by 2035 at a 5.00% CAGR. African demand is mostly replacement air springs for imported trucks, trailers and coaches in South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya and Morocco, with South Africa's truck assembly and bus body industry the largest single buyer group.
