Hotter Hybrid Engines and the PFAS Squeeze Lift Acrylic Elastomer Demand by Half Over Ten Years

Seals, gaskets and hoses made from acrylic elastomers generated USD 1.08 Billion of global automotive demand in 2025, by Radial Insights' estimate, and the Automotive Acrylic Elastomers Market moves to USD 1.13 Billion in 2026 and USD 1.63 Billion by 2035 at a CAGR of 4.20%. Two polymer families make up the category: polyacrylate rubber (ACM) and ethylene acrylic elastomer (AEM).

Our scope covers ACM and AEM raw polymer and ready-to-mold compounds sold for use in passenger cars, light and heavy commercial vehicles and off-highway machines, valued at the polymer and compound supplier level. Applications include turbocharger and charge-air hoses, valve cover and oil pan gaskets, transmission and driveline seals, crankshaft and other oil seals, O-rings, cable jacketing and protective boots. We exclude finished seal and hose value added by part makers, fluoroelastomers (FKM), hydrogenated nitrile rubber (HNBR), silicone and non-automotive uses such as industrial hoses or wire for buildings.

Acrylic elastomers sit between nitrile rubber and fluoroelastomers in performance and price. ACM tolerates hot engine oil to around 150°C to 175°C, while AEM adds better low-temperature flexibility and resistance to blow-by gases, which suits charge-air hoses on turbocharged engines. Both are halogen-free alternatives to FKM in many sealing jobs, a point that gained weight after ECHA published its revised PFAS restriction proposal in August 2025.

Hybrid vehicles are the fastest-growing propulsion segment at a CAGR of 7.90%, because full and plug-in hybrids keep a hot, often turbocharged engine and add electric drive seals. Asia Pacific (APAC) is both the largest and the fastest-growing region at 4.80% a year, reflecting China's 34.53 million vehicles produced in 2025.

The Automotive Acrylic Elastomers Market faces a long-run headwind from battery electric vehicles, which drop most engine seals. Our model offsets that loss with higher content per hybrid, new e-axle and thermal system seals, and substitution from fluoropolymers in moderate-temperature jobs.

AEM Outpaces ACM at 4.60% as Charge-Air Hoses Multiply

Ethylene acrylic elastomer grows at 4.60% compared with 3.90% for polyacrylate rubber. AEM, sold mainly under Celanese's Vamac brand, handles low temperatures and blow-by gases better, which makes it the default choice for turbocharger and charge-air hoses. ACM, supplied by Zeon, NOK's Unimatec and Denka, remains the workhorse for valve cover gaskets, oil pan gaskets and oil seals, where cost per part matters most.

Turbocharger and Air Intake Hoses Lead Applications at 5.10%

Turbocharger and air intake hoses grow at 5.10%, transmission and driveline seals at 4.70%, cable jacketing and boots at 4.00%, oil seals and O-rings at 3.60%, and engine gaskets and seals at 3.40%. Downsized turbo engines are standard in hybrids, and each turbo engine uses several meters of charge-air hose. Transmission seals benefit from dedicated hybrid transmissions and e-axles. Engine gaskets grow slowest because they disappear entirely in battery electric vehicles.

Heavy Commercial Vehicles Grow at 4.60%, Ahead of Passenger Cars

Heavy commercial vehicles grow at 4.60% because diesel trucks keep long service lives, high engine temperatures and aftertreatment systems that need heat-resistant hoses. Light commercial vehicles follow at 4.30%, passenger cars at 4.10% and off-highway vehicles at 3.80%. Truck output is volatile, with US OE truck tire shipments projected down 18.1% in 2025 by USTMA, but replacement demand keeps acrylic seals flowing.

Hybrids Grow at 7.90% While Engine-Only Vehicles Slow to 2.60%

Internal combustion engine vehicles without electrification grow at only 2.60%, held back by falling engine-only production in China and Europe. Hybrid vehicles grow at 7.90% because they carry a full engine sealing package plus electric drive seals. Battery electric vehicles grow at 6.80% from a low base, with acrylic elastomers used in e-axle seals, gear oil seals and some thermal management parts. Global EV sales passed 20 million in 2025, according to the IEA.

OEM Supply Grows at 4.30%, Aftermarket at 3.90%

OEM supply grows at 4.30% and accounts for most volume since acrylic parts are designed into engines at launch. The aftermarket grows at 3.90%, driven by gasket and seal replacement in an aging global vehicle fleet, especially in Latin America, the Middle East and Africa.

Market Trends

PFAS Restriction Puts Sealing Materials Under Review

In August 2025, ECHA published a revised PFAS restriction proposal under REACH that added eight sectors, including sealing, and introduced options allowing continued use where risks are controlled. The European Sealing Association said sealing applications were now officially in focus. For seal designers, the update raises the value of halogen-free materials such as AEM and ACM in jobs where fluoroelastomers were chosen as a safety margin rather than a need.

Fluoropolymer Supply Tightens After 3M's Exit

In January 2026, 3M confirmed it had completed its exit from PFAS manufacturing by the end of 2025, a wind-down affecting more than 22,000 products, while noting that sealing components are among the hardest areas to replace. Fewer suppliers of fluoroelastomers give automakers a reason to qualify acrylic alternatives where temperatures allow.

Producers Consolidate Capacity

In August 2025, Celanese announced it would close its Vamac elastomer plant in Sarnia, Ontario, and consolidate the work into its existing footprint, as part of measures expected to save USD 5 million to USD 10 million by 2026. Consolidation keeps AEM supply in fewer hands and gives buyers a reason to dual-source between AEM and ACM grades.

Production Growth Shifts East

In April 2026, OICA reported that global vehicle production reached 96.4 million units in 2025, up 3.9%, with China at 34.53 million and India at 6.49 million while Europe slipped 0.8% to 17.2 million. Seal and hose makers are adding Asian compounding and molding capacity to follow their customers, which pulls acrylic elastomer demand toward Asia Pacific.

Restraints and Challenges

Battery Electric Vehicles Remove Engine Seals

A battery electric car has no valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket or turbo hose. According to the IEA, global electric car sales topped 20 million in 2025, about one in four new cars, and the agency expects about 23 million in 2026. In China, about 55% of new cars sold in 2025 were electric. Each full battery electric vehicle cuts acrylic elastomer content per vehicle sharply. OICA data also show European output fell 0.8% in 2025 to 17.2 million vehicles, the region where engine-only volumes are shrinking fastest.

Price Pressure From Raw Materials and Labor

Acrylic monomers, ethylene and curatives drive costs. Suppliers have raised prices repeatedly, and in May 2026 Celanese announced price increases on engineered materials effective June 1. Seal makers working under annual price-down contracts with automakers struggle to pass these increases on.

Competition From HNBR and Advanced Silicones

HNBR offers higher strength and fuel resistance, and fluorosilicones and specialty silicones offer wider temperature ranges. Where engines run hotter than about 175°C, acrylic elastomers lose out, and some automakers standardize on one premium material across a platform to simplify sourcing.

Concentrated Supply Raises Risk

A few producers supply most of the world's ACM and AEM. Celanese faced AEM supply problems in 2022 and 2023 before investing in plant reliability, and plant consolidation in 2025 leaves less spare capacity. A single outage can disrupt seal programs for months because each compound needs automaker approval.

Growth Drivers

Turbocharged Hybrid Engines Raise Heat and Oil Exposure

Hybrid powertrains have become the main growth path for combustion engines. Toyota, Hyundai, BYD, Geely and Volkswagen all build downsized turbocharged or high-compression engines paired with electric motors, and these engines run hotter and start and stop more often than older designs. Charge-air hoses must handle hot, oily air under pressure, which suits AEM, while ACM handles hot oil in gaskets and seals. A typical turbo engine uses several acrylic hoses and gaskets, and a hybrid adds driveline and transmission seals. Global electric car sales, which include plug-in hybrids, topped 20 million in 2025. We estimate this driver adds about +1.2% of annual growth to the Automotive Acrylic Elastomers Market through 2035, with most of the effect in Asia Pacific and North America, where hybrid sales are rising fastest.

PFAS Rules Push Substitution Away From Fluoroelastomers

Regulators are tightening controls on PFAS. In August 2025, ECHA's revised REACH proposal named sealing as a sector for assessment, and under one option a ban would apply 18 months after entry into force with derogations of 6.5 to 13.5 years for specific uses. Automakers and seal makers such as Freudenberg Sealing Technologies, Trelleborg and Parker Hannifin are testing halogen-free alternatives in jobs where FKM was over-specified. 3M's completed exit from PFAS production at the end of 2025 adds supply pressure on FKM buyers. AEM and ACM win where temperatures stay below about 175°C. Substitution contributes roughly +0.9 percentage points to the CAGR in our model, concentrated in Europe and among European automakers' global platforms.

Rising Vehicle Output in Asia Anchors Volume

Asia Pacific now builds most of the world's vehicles. OICA data show China produced 34.53 million and India 6.49 million vehicles in 2025, and Japan 8.41 million. Asian seal and hose makers such as Sumitomo Riko and Toyoda Gosei, along with Zeon's Thai ACM plant and NOK's regional operations, supply this base. India's production growth and China's large hybrid output support acrylic elastomer volumes even as engine-only production falls. This regional pull adds close to +0.7% a year to market growth and keeps Asia Pacific above half of global demand through 2035.

Opportunities

E-Axle and Thermal Management Seals

Battery electric vehicles need seals for e-axle gearboxes, coolant pumps and battery cooling loops. Acrylic elastomers can serve gear oil and some coolant contact jobs at lower cost than FKM, giving suppliers a route to retain content as electrification grows. Battery electric demand grows at 6.80% in our model.

Low-Emission and Recycled-Content Grades

Automakers ask for lower carbon footprints in purchased materials. Producers that offer bio-based monomer content, mass-balance certification or lower-emission curing systems can win platform awards, especially from European automakers that report supplier emissions.

Asia Pacific Holds 52.40% of Acrylic Elastomer Demand and Grows Fastest at 4.80%

Regional demand follows vehicle and engine production. Asia Pacific dominates because China, Japan, India, South Korea and Thailand build most engines, while Europe and North America remain large for heavy trucks and premium vehicles.

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Europe produced 17.2 million vehicles in 2025, down 0.8%, and is home to seal makers Freudenberg and ElringKlinger, which lead the testing of PFAS-free sealing materials.

North America

North America holds an 18.30% share in 2025, worth USD 197.64 Million. North America grows at 3.40% a year to USD 276.11 Million by 2035. The United States produced 10.24 million vehicles in 2025, and pickup trucks and heavy trucks with turbocharged engines keep demand for heat-resistant hoses high. Zeon has ACM capacity in Kentucky.

Latin America

Latin America represents 4.70% of 2025 demand at USD 50.76 Million. Latin America grows at 4.10% a year to USD 75.86 Million by 2035, led by vehicle production in Brazil and Mexico and by aftermarket gasket replacement in an older fleet.

Middle East

The Middle East holds a 2.30% share in 2025, worth USD 24.84 Million. The Middle East grows at 4.30% a year to USD 37.84 Million by 2035. Hot climates raise under-hood temperatures, and new vehicle assembly projects in Saudi Arabia support demand.

Africa

Africa represents 1.70% of 2025 demand at USD 18.36 Million. Africa grows at 4.60% a year to USD 28.79 Million by 2035, supported by vehicle assembly in South Africa and Morocco and by aftermarket replacement.

Four Polymer Producers Supply Most Volume While Seal Makers Decide the Material Mix

The Automotive Acrylic Elastomers Market is concentrated at the polymer level and fragmented at the part level. A handful of Japanese and US producers make most ACM and AEM, while dozens of seal, gasket and hose makers compound and mold the material for automakers.

Polyacrylate Rubber (ACM) Producers

Zeon Corporation is the largest ACM producer, selling Nipol AR and HyTemp grades and operating plants in Japan, Thailand and Kentucky. NOK Corporation, through its Unimatec unit, makes Noxtite ACM and also molds seals, giving it a link from polymer to finished part. Denka sells Denka ER acrylic special rubber and has used price increases to manage cost pressure.

Ethylene Acrylic Elastomer (AEM) Supply

Celanese owns the Vamac AEM brand, acquired with DuPont's Mobility and Materials business. Vamac grades are widely used in turbocharger hoses, transmission seals and cable jacketing. Celanese invested in plant reliability after supply problems in 2022 and 2023 and in 2025 began closing its Sarnia site to consolidate production.

Seal and Gasket Makers

Freudenberg Sealing Technologies, Trelleborg, Parker Hannifin, SKF and ElringKlinger buy acrylic elastomers for engine, transmission and driveline seals. These companies run the material approvals with automakers and are leading tests of PFAS-free alternatives to FKM.

Hose and Body Component Makers

Continental's ContiTech unit, Sumitomo Riko, Toyoda Gosei and Cooper Standard make charge-air hoses, fluid lines and boots, many using AEM or ACM compounds. Their move toward hybrid platforms in Asia and North America drives the regional shift in acrylic elastomer demand.
