A Carbon Footprint Beyond the Factory Fence

Tire manufacturing is an energy-intensive industrial process with a carbon footprint that extends far beyond the factory fence. The Banbury internal mixing stage - where rubber polymers, carbon black, silica, process oils and chemical additives are compounded at temperatures above 150 degrees Celsius - accounts for 30 to 40 percent of total plant energy use and represents the largest single Scope 1 emissions source in a typical tire plant. The curing stage, where green tires are vulcanized at 160 to 200 degrees Celsius, is the second largest. Collectively, Scope 1 direct combustion emissions from these two stages alone represent a material carbon liability for manufacturers with Science-Based Target commitments or CSRD reporting obligations.

But Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions - direct combustion and purchased electricity - are only part of the picture that investors, OEM customers and regulators are now demanding manufacturers account for. Scope 3 emissions from upstream raw material production are substantially larger. Natural rubber cultivation, processing and transport carries significant embedded carbon. Carbon black - which constitutes approximately 25 percent of tire weight - is produced through incomplete combustion of petroleum feedstocks in one of the more carbon-intensive industrial processes in the chemical sector. Steel cord, bead wire and synthetic rubber production all carry material Scope 3 emissions footprints that a manufacturer purchasing these inputs is now accountable for under GHG Protocol Category 1 (purchased goods and services) reporting. The EU's CSRD regulation, which requires large companies and certain listed SMEs to disclose Scope 3 emissions under the ESRS (European Sustainability Reporting Standards), is making this accounting mandatory rather than voluntary for many tire manufacturers.

Phase two is opportunity identification: mapping the full portfolio of decarbonization levers available by emission source, quantifying their abatement potential, capital requirement and operating cost impact, and sequencing them by net present value. Phase three is the net-zero roadmap: a time-phased implementation plan with year-by-year emission trajectories, capital allocation schedules, procurement contract amendments for low-carbon input materials, and SBTi target alignment verification.
