From Voluntary Best-Practice to Regulated Obligation

Sustainability disclosure in the tire industry has moved from voluntary best-practice to regulated obligation in the space of five years. The EU's Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which entered into force for large EU companies from 2024 reporting periods and extends progressively to smaller companies and non-EU companies with material EU operations, requires sustainability disclosures under the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) with the same rigor and assurance standards applied to financial reporting. The Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) - now embedded in UK mandatory reporting requirements and referenced in CSRD - requires disclosure of climate risk governance, strategy, risk management and metrics aligned to scenario analysis. GRI Standards remain the most widely used global sustainability reporting framework and the baseline against which stakeholders including investors, OEM customers and civil society organizations evaluate the completeness and credibility of a tire manufacturer's ESG disclosure.

The Tire Industry Project (TIP) SDG Roadmap

The Tire Industry Project (TIP) - a CEO-led initiative operating under the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), with founding members including Bridgestone, Continental, Goodyear, Hankook, Michelin, Pirelli, Sumitomo and Yokohama - has developed a shared SDG roadmap that maps the tire industry's specific sustainability impacts and contributions against the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. TIP's work spans TRWP research, end-of-life tire management, responsible natural rubber sourcing through GPSNR, and climate action commitments. For tire manufacturers - particularly those in OEM supply relationships with vehicle makers who are themselves TIP-adjacent in their sustainability governance - alignment to the TIP SDG framework is increasingly an expectation that must be operationally demonstrated, not merely stated.

TRWP & ELT Research

TIP's research spans tire and road wear particles and end-of-life tire management, informing regulatory risk assessments.

GPSNR Sourcing Alignment

Responsible natural rubber sourcing through GPSNR is a core pillar of the TIP SDG roadmap.

Climate Action Commitments

Shared climate action commitments mapped against United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
