A Circular Pathway for Tire Compound Carbon Black

Carbon black is the second largest raw material input by weight in most tire compounds, contributing reinforcing properties, UV resistance and tread durability. Conventional carbon black is produced through the incomplete combustion of petroleum-based feedstocks - a process that is energy-intensive, emissions-heavy and increasingly subject to regulatory scrutiny in key producing markets including China and the EU.

Recovered carbon black (rCB) - derived primarily through the pyrolysis of end-of-life tires (ELTs) - offers a circular economy pathway that addresses both input cost and sustainability objectives simultaneously. The global end-of-life tire stream generates hundreds of millions of units annually, creating a potentially large feedstock base for pyrolysis operations. The carbon black fraction recovered from this process, when properly refined and processed, can substitute for virgin N-grade carbon black grades in select tire compound applications.

Evaluating rCB Quality and Fit

However, the technology is not without complexity. rCB quality varies significantly depending on the pyrolysis process design, feedstock mix, post-processing (pelletizing, activation, refinement) and ash content management. Not all rCB grades are suitable for use in structural or safety-critical tire components, and direct substitution of virgin carbon black without compound reformulation carries performance and compliance risk.
