IATF 16949 is the internationally recognized Quality Management System (QMS) standard for automotive production and relevant service part organizations. For tire manufacturers supplying directly to OEM vehicle makers - whether fitting PCR tires to passenger cars and SUVs, TBR tires to heavy trucks and buses, or specialized EV tires to electric vehicle platforms - IATF 16949 certification is typically a baseline commercial requirement rather than a differentiating credential. Without it, entry to most Tier 1 OEM supply chains is effectively closed.
The standard combines the process-based framework of ISO 9001:2015 with automotive-specific requirements covering advanced product quality planning (APQP), production part approval process (PPAP), failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), statistical process control (SPC), and measurement system analysis (MSA).
