Decarbonizing an Energy-Intensive Process

Tire manufacturing is an energy-intensive process. The internal mixing stage, where natural and synthetic rubbers are compounded with carbon black, silica, process oils and chemical additives at temperatures above 150 degrees Celsius, is the single largest energy consumer in a typical tire plant - accounting for 30 to 40 percent of total energy use. The curing stage, where green tires are vulcanized in heated molds at temperatures of 160 to 200 degrees Celsius under pressure, is the second largest. Steam generation, compressed air systems, cooling water circuits and building HVAC collectively account for the balance.

For tire manufacturers with publicly declared Science-Based Targets (SBTi), CSRD reporting obligations in Europe, GRI or TCFD sustainability reporting commitments, or investor and OEM customer pressure on ESG performance, carbon footprint reduction in manufacturing operations is now a board-level priority. Many of the world's largest OEM vehicle manufacturers - who are themselves under pressure to reduce supply chain Scope 3 emissions - are increasingly asking Tier 1 tire suppliers to demonstrate a credible decarbonization pathway. This OEM pressure is cascading downstream to Tier 2 and Tier 3 tire makers as well.

Emissions Mapping and Opportunity Identification

Radial Insights delivers energy transition and carbon footprint reduction engagements across three phases. The first is emissions mapping - a comprehensive Scope 1 (direct combustion in mixing and curing), Scope 2 (purchased electricity and steam) and Scope 3 (upstream raw material production, particularly natural rubber, carbon black and steel cord, which carry significant embedded carbon) baseline quantification, structured to the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard and aligned to the Product Category Rules (PCR) and Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) framework where applicable. The second phase is opportunity identification and prioritization across both operational and upstream levers.

Scope 1-3 Baseline Quantification

Comprehensive emissions baseline across direct combustion, purchased energy, and upstream raw material production, structured to the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard.

Fuel Switching & Renewable Procurement

Evaluation of fuel switching in mixing and curing (natural gas to biomethane or hydrogen) and renewable electricity procurement options.

Heat Recovery & Utility Efficiency

Heat recovery from curing presses and mixer cooling circuits, compressed air efficiency, and lighting/HVAC optimization opportunities.

Scope 3 Supply Chain Levers

Natural rubber responsible sourcing (GPSNR), recycled carbon black adoption, and steel cord supplier decarbonization engagement.

Net-Zero Roadmap Development

The third phase is net-zero roadmap development - a time-phased implementation plan with year-by-year emissions trajectories, capital investment requirements, operating cost impact (noting that many energy efficiency measures are also margin-improving), and Science-Based Target alignment verification. Radial Insights ensures that roadmaps are grounded in the operational and financial reality of tire plant management, not in theoretical models that ignore production scheduling constraints, equipment replacement cycles or capital allocation competition within manufacturing organizations.

Time-Phased Emissions Trajectory

Year-by-year emissions reduction trajectory aligned to your Science-Based Target commitments.

Capital & Operating Cost Modelling

Capital investment requirements and operating cost impact modelling for each decarbonization lever, including margin-improving efficiency measures.

SBTi Alignment Verification

Verification that the roadmap aligns with Science-Based Target methodology and reporting requirements.

Roadmaps Grounded in Plant Reality

Radial Insights ensures that every net-zero roadmap reflects the operational and financial reality of tire plant management - production scheduling constraints, equipment replacement cycles, and capital allocation competition - rather than a theoretical decarbonization model disconnected from how your plants actually operate.
