The EU digital product passport for tyres turns RFID from a fleet add-on into a standard tire component by the early 2030s

Sales of tire RFID tags totaled USD 58.70 Million in 2025, and Radial Insights forecasts USD 70.32 Million in 2026 and USD 357.44 Million by 2035, a 19.80% CAGR, as tire makers prepare for mandatory digital identity on every tire sold in Europe.

The tire RFID tags market covers UHF RAIN RFID transponders made for tires: tags vulcanized into the tire during building or curing, post-cure patches bonded to the inner liner, and adhesive labels. Tags follow the ISO 20909 to 20912 series published in 2019 and 2020 and the ISO/IEC 18000-63 air interface at 860 to 930 MHz, and most store a permalocked 96-bit SGTIN identifier. We value tags and inlays at the point of sale to tire makers, retreaders and fleets. Readers, software, tire pressure sensors and the tires themselves are excluded.

Adoption is still early. Michelin says more than 100 million tires already carry RAIN RFID tags, and Hana Technologies has supplied over 250 million tire tags across more than 20 years. Against Michelin's estimate of about 1.68 billion passenger and light truck tires and roughly 219 million new truck tires sold worldwide in 2025, tagged tires remain a small minority of annual output, which leaves large headroom for the tire RFID tags market.

Regulatory compliance and digital product passport use is the fastest-growing application at a 26.90% CAGR, and embedded tags are the fastest-growing tag type at 23.40%. Asia Pacific (APAC) is the fastest-growing region at 21.60% a year because exporters in China, Korea and Japan must tag tires bound for Europe.

Europe leads with a 38.60% share of 2025 value. The European Commission named tyres one of five priority final products in its April 2025 ESPR working plan, and a Commission preparatory study in May 2026 proposed RAIN RFID as the primary data carrier for the tyre passport.

Embedded tags win because only they meet passport durability needs

Embedded tags grow at 23.40% a year. The RAIN Alliance noted in July 2026 that, among the ISO 20909 form factors, embedded tags suit passport use, post-cure patches depend on durability and stickers do not qualify. Post-cure patches still grow at 15.10% because fleets retrofit tires already in service. Adhesive labels grow at only 8.20%, limited to warehouse and logistics use.

Passenger tires catch up with truck tires

Truck and bus tires were tagged first, because fleets track casings for retreading; Bridgestone set a goal in October 2022 to make RFID standard in its truck and bus tires by 2030. That segment grows at 17.60%. Passenger car and light truck tires grow faster, at 22.10%, because the EU passport will cover them and Michelin has led passenger tagging with its Gen-4 tag. OTR and agricultural tires grow at 15.30%, and two-wheeler and motorsport tires at 13.40%, a niche that includes Falken race tires and DMACK's planned RFID bicycle tires.

Compliance overtakes traceability as the main reason to tag

Manufacturing and logistics traceability, the original use case, grows at 18.20%. Fleet and asset management grows at 17.30%, and retreading and lifecycle management at 16.40%. Regulatory compliance and digital product passport use is the fastest-growing application at 26.90% as the tyre delegated act, expected in 2027, approaches.

Tire makers buy most tags

Tire manufacturers grow at 20.60% because they embed tags at the plant. Retreaders and service providers grow at 17.40%, and fleet operators, who mainly buy patches, grow at 16.90%.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

The EU tyre passport moves from plan to standards

The European Commission adopted its ESPR working plan in April 2025, naming tyres among five priority final products. At a stakeholder meeting in November 2025, the Commission's Joint Research Centre estimated the tyre delegated act for 2027 and a separate passport act on registries and data carriers for 2026. In June 2026, CEN-CENELEC JTC 24 published six passport standards, including EN 18220 on data carriers, which covers RFID alongside 2D codes and NFC.

Industry pilots link tags to recycling data

Michelin leads a tyre passport pilot under the EU CIRPASS-2 program in France, Germany and Sweden, running to 2027, with partners including GS1, the Global Data Service Organization for Tyres and Automotive Components (GDSO), Euromaster, BASF, Enviro, Aliapur and Pneuhage. The pilot follows each tire from the factory through use, retreading and recycling using its RFID identity.

More tire makers join a shared data platform

GDSO, founded by Bridgestone, Continental, Goodyear, Michelin and Pirelli, is the common data hub for RFID-tagged tires. Toyo Tire joined in November 2025 and said it would build a database covering all Toyo Group tires. A shared platform lets retailers and recyclers read any brand's tag with one system.

Tag makers sign volume deals with tire makers

Beontag agreed in April 2025 to supply its TireTag RFID for millions of Kumho passenger, commercial and racing tires. Kumho has made RFID tires since 2013. Beontag, Murata and Hana RFID are the most active tire tag suppliers, and new entrants were expected to enter the tire RFID tags market from mid-2025.

Restraints and Challenges

Cost per tire in a price-sensitive product

An embedded tag adds cost to every tire, plus the cost of insertion equipment and readers. For low-cost passenger tires sold by price, even a small cost is hard to pass on. Until the passport becomes mandatory, many makers outside Europe will tag only premium and truck lines.

Durability inside the tire

Tags must survive vulcanization at high temperature and pressure, years of flexing, and retreading. The RAIN Alliance notes that patches depend on durability and stickers do not qualify for passport use. Tag makers must prove survival rates over the full life of the tire before fleets will rely on the data.

Regulatory timing is still open

The tyre delegated act is expected in 2027, with compliance 18 to 36 months later. The European Commission has set tyres as a priority, but the final choice of data carrier and the scope of mandatory data are not yet law. Some tire makers will wait for the final rule before investing in plant-wide tagging.

Semiconductor cycles and chip supply

Tags depend on a few chip makers. RAIN tag chip shipments fell to 42.7 billion in 2025 from 52.8 billion in 2024, citing inventory cycles and US tariffs on apparel, and Impinj's revenue slipped to USD 361.1 million in 2025 from USD 366.1 million. Tire tags are a small share of chip demand, so tire makers have limited pull on chip makers in tight markets.

Growth Drivers

The EU digital product passport for tyres

The single biggest driver is regulation. The European Commission named tyres one of five priority final products in April 2025, the Joint Research Centre estimated the tyre delegated act for 2027, and according to the RAIN Alliance a Commission preparatory study in May 2026 proposed RAIN RFID as the primary data carrier. Compliance is expected 18 to 36 months after the act, which puts mandatory tagging for tires sold in the EU around 2029 to 2030. Every tire maker that exports to Europe, from Michelin to Chinese and Korean brands, will need to embed tags across its range. We estimate this driver adds about +6.5% of annual growth to the tire RFID tags market through 2035, concentrated in embedded tags and passenger tires. The passport also requires data on materials and recycled content, so tags become the key that links each physical tire to its record in a registry.

Fleet and retreading economics

Truck fleets and retreaders use RFID to track casings, mileage and repair history, which helps them retread more casings and cut tire cost per kilometer. Bridgestone aims to make RFID standard in its truck and bus tires globally by 2030, Giti began embedding tags in its European truck and bus tires in December 2024, and Sumitomo Rubber launched Japan's first commercial RFID tires in 2023. Wheel balancers such as the Fasep V788 now read tags in the workshop. Fleet and retreading demand lifts the market CAGR by roughly 2.8 percentage points, mostly in truck and bus tires, which grow at 17.60% a year.

Falling tag costs and more tag suppliers

Tag supply has scaled. Beontag opened a USD 80 million plant in Ohio in December 2024 with capacity of up to 3 billion RFID tags a year, including tire tags. Murata licensed Michelin's Gen-4 tire tag design in May 2024 and planned mass production from January 2025, and Hana Technologies took a Michelin license for its Rev4 tag in March 2024. Chip makers Impinj, NXP and EM Microelectronic supply the RAIN chips. More suppliers and larger volumes bring down unit prices, which helps tire makers tag mid-range lines. We estimate wider supply and lower prices account for close to 1.5 points of annual market growth, even though lower prices also reduce revenue per tag. Licensing of the same Michelin tag design to several suppliers also reduces the risk for tire makers of being tied to a single source.

Opportunities

Deforestation and origin tracing

DMACK Nordic said in October 2026 that it will put RFID tags in its Suomi bicycle tyres from 2027, linking each tyre's ID to natural rubber origin data for the EU deforestation regulation. Linking tags to raw material origin opens a second compliance use beyond the passport.

End-of-life sorting and recycling

Recyclers such as Enviro and Aliapur take part in the CIRPASS-2 pilot. Reading tags at collection points lets recyclers sort tires by compound and route them to the best process, which supports tire-to-tire recycling targets.

Europe leads tire RFID adoption today, while Asia Pacific grows fastest as exporters prepare for the passport

Europe

Europe held a 38.60% share of the tire RFID tags market in 2025, worth USD 22.66 Million, and will reach USD 133.43 Million by 2035 at a 19.40% CAGR. Michelin, Continental and Pirelli are based in Europe, and the CIRPASS-2 pilot runs in France, Germany and Sweden. The EU passport makes Europe the reference market for tag specifications.

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) accounted for 31.70% of 2025 value, or USD 18.61 Million, and is the fastest-growing region at 21.60%, reaching USD 131.53 Million by 2035. Kumho, Toyo, Sumitomo Rubber, Bridgestone and Hankook are based in Korea and Japan, and Chinese tire exporters must tag tires bound for Europe. Murata and Hana supply tags from Japan and Korea.

North America

North America represented 22.40% of 2025 value, or USD 13.15 Million, growing at 18.40% to USD 71.19 Million by 2035. Goodyear is a GDSO founding member, Beontag's Ohio plant can make up to 3 billion tags a year, and Impinj, a US chip maker, supplies tire tag chips. Truck fleets drive most North American demand.

Latin America

Latin America had a 3.80% share, equal to USD 2.23 Million in 2025, and grows at 17.10% to USD 10.81 Million by 2035. Brazil's large truck retreading industry is the main user of casing tags in Latin America, and Mexican plants that export to Europe will need passport-ready tags.

Middle East

The Middle East took 2.10% of 2025 value, or USD 1.23 Million, and grows at 16.80% to USD 5.82 Million by 2035. Mining and logistics fleets in the Gulf use RFID to manage OTR and truck tires, and Middle East demand is mostly for post-cure patches.

Africa

Africa held a 1.40% share, or USD 0.82 Million in 2025, and grows at 16.20% to USD 3.69 Million by 2035. Mining fleets in South Africa and West Africa track large OTR tires, but limited reader infrastructure keeps adoption low.

  • In July 2026, the RAIN Alliance reported that a European Commission preparatory study had proposed RAIN RFID as the primary data carrier for the tyre digital product passport.

  • In June 2026, CEN-CENELEC JTC 24 published six digital product passport standards, including EN 18220 on data carriers covering RFID.

  • In April 2026, the RAIN Alliance reported 42.7 billion RAIN tag chips shipped in 2025, down from 52.8 billion in 2024.

  • In November 2025, Toyo Tire joined GDSO and said it would build a database of all Toyo Group tires on the RFID-based platform.

  • In April 2025, Beontag and Kumho Tire agreed to put Beontag's TireTag RFID in millions of Kumho passenger, commercial and racing tires.

Three specialist tag makers supply most tire RFID volume, with Michelin's design as the reference

The tire RFID tags market has a layered structure: chip makers sell RAIN chips to tag makers, tag makers build rubber-encapsulated tags for tire makers, and tire makers decide which design to embed. Michelin's Gen-4 design, licensed to several suppliers, is the closest thing to an industry reference, and GDSO provides the shared data layer.

Tire tag specialists

Beontag supplies its TireTag range, now in its fourth generation, to Michelin and Kumho, and runs an Ohio plant with capacity of up to 3 billion tags a year. Hana Technologies, also known as Hana RFID, has supplied more than 250 million tire tags and holds a Michelin license for its Rev4 tag. Murata Manufacturing licensed Michelin's Gen-4 tag in 2024 and supplies tags and readers, including the reader built into the Fasep V788 wheel balancer. Avery Dennison supplies its AD Maxdura tag for motorsport tires, including Falken race tires.

Chip makers

Impinj, with 2025 revenue of USD 361.1 million, supplies Monza and M700 series chips used in tire tags and had its M730 chip approved by the FIA for motorsport. NXP supplies UCODE chips, and EM Microelectronic is among the four chip makers that report shipment figures to the RAIN Alliance. Chip makers compete on read range, memory and durability under heat.

Tire makers that set the pace

Michelin says more than 100 million tires carry RAIN tags and leads the CIRPASS-2 passport pilot. Bridgestone aims to make RFID standard in all its truck and bus tires by 2030. Goodyear, Continental and Pirelli are GDSO founding members alongside Michelin and Bridgestone. Kumho has made RFID tires since 2013, Toyo joined GDSO in November 2025, and Sumitomo Rubber launched Japan's first commercial RFID tires in 2023.

How suppliers compete

Tag makers win business on survival rate through curing and retreading, read range through the tire wall, and the cost of insertion at the plant. Licensing of the Michelin design reduces lock-in, so price and service matter more each year. Suppliers that also offer readers and data services, such as Murata, can sell into fleets and workshops.
