Construction Modifiers and Asian Paperboard Lines Carry a Market That Europe Is Shrinking
Global Styrene Butadiene Latex demand reached USD 7.85 Billion in 2025, rises to USD 8.19 Billion in 2026 and reaches USD 12.02 Billion by 2035, a 4.35% CAGR over 2025-2035. That pace is steady rather than spectacular, and it hides a sharp split between growing Asian and North American demand and a contracting European base.
This study covers carboxylated (XSB) and non-carboxylated styrene butadiene latex sold as a water-based dispersion into paper and paperboard coating, carpet backing, cement and mortar modification, adhesives, nonwoven binding, tire cord dip and molded foam. Values are measured at producer selling prices. We exclude emulsion SBR dry rubber, which Radial Insights tracks separately, along with solution SBR, styrene-acrylic latex, NBR latex and isoprene latex.
Construction and Mortar Modifiers is the fastest application at a 6.10% CAGR, helped by tile adhesives, waterproofing slurries and repair mortars in India, Southeast Asia and the Gulf. Asia Pacific (APAC) is the fastest region at 5.30% a year and already the largest, with 47.50% of 2025 revenue. Paper and paperboard coating remains the largest single outlet, but its growth is now tied almost entirely to coated board for food and e-commerce packaging rather than graphic paper.
Supply is being reshaped quickly. Asahi Kasei said in May 2025 that it will end SB latex production in Japan by September 2027, Trinseo entered Chapter 11 in May 2026 while its Latex Binders sales still rose 21% in the second quarter of 2026, and Apcotex Industries approved a 37,000 tonne per year latex expansion at Valia in Gujarat. Feedstock relief also matters: butadiene fell by USD 470-530 per metric ton across the major hubs during 2025, according to S&P Global.
Our Styrene Butadiene Latex forecast assumes that coated board volumes in Asia keep growing, that European carpet and graphic paper demand keeps shrinking, and that butadiene stays well supplied through 2027 as Chinese self-sufficiency rises.

Carboxylated XSB Grades Grow Faster Because Converters Want Pigment Binding Strength
Carboxylated SB latex leads by revenue and grows at 4.60% a year, against 3.70% for non-carboxylated types. Adding acrylic or itaconic acid during polymerization gives better mechanical stability, pigment binding and adhesion to fibers and cement. That is why coated board mills and tile adhesive formulators specify XSB. Non-carboxylated latex keeps its place in foam, some carpet compounds and tire cord dip, where cure behavior matters more than pigment binding, but those end uses are mature.
Mortar Modification Leads Growth While Carpet Backing Lags
Paper and Paperboard Coating is the largest application, growing at 3.90%. Folding boxboard and coated recycled board absorb more latex per tonne than graphic paper, so the switch away from plastic packaging supports demand even as office paper declines. Construction and Mortar Modifiers grows fastest at 6.10%, as contractors in India and Southeast Asia move from site-mixed mortar to polymer-modified dry mix and liquid admixtures. Adhesives and Sealants (5.20%) and Nonwovens and Textiles (4.80%) also run ahead of the market average. Carpet Backing is the weakest at 2.40%: Synthomer told investors in April 2026 that SBR for carpet and foam in Europe remained difficult, and broadloom carpet continues to lose ground to resilient flooring. Tire Cord Dip and Foam grows 3.60%, held back by the small number of dip formulations still based on straight SB latex.
High-Solids Latex Gains as Mills Cut Drying Energy
High-solids grades expand at 5.30% a year against 3.80% for standard solids. Less water per tonne of binder means lower drying energy on coaters and lower freight. Mysteel reported in March 2025 that 100,000 tonnes per year of new high-solids SBR latex capacity was due in China during 2025, compared with about 120,000 tonnes per year already installed there.
Building and Construction Is the Fastest End-Use Industry
Building and Construction grows 5.80% a year, followed by Hygiene and Medical at 5.00%, where SB latex binds airlaid and wetlaid nonwovens. Packaging and Printing grows 4.10%, combining strong board demand with falling graphic paper. Automotive and Tire (3.50%) and Flooring and Home Furnishings (2.60%) trail, because tire dip and carpet are mature and exposed to substitution.

Market Dynamics
Market Trends
Western Producers Are Leaving Commodity SB Latex While Asian Capacity Expands
Supply is consolidating. Asahi Kasei announced on 27 May 2025, as part of a mid-term plan, that it will stop producing SB latex in Japan by September 2027 and phase out sales by late 2027. Zeon confirmed in June 2026 that it is accelerating exits from emulsion rubber and NBR latex. In contrast, Apcotex Industries approved in November 2025 a 37,000 tonne per year synthetic latex addition at Valia, due in phases by Q1 FY27. In our view, capacity in the Styrene Butadiene Latex sector is moving toward India and China.
Cheaper Butadiene Is Reducing Binder Costs for Mills
S&P Global reported in December 2025 that Platts butadiene prices in China, the US Gulf Coast and Rotterdam fell USD 470-530 per metric ton from January to early December 2025, while the US monthly contract price dropped 19.75 cents per pound. China imported 428,721 metric tons of butadiene in January to October 2025, up 39%. Lower monomer costs passed through to latex contract prices in 2025 and have made SB latex more competitive against starch and acrylic co-binders in board coating.
Regional Divergence Shows Up in Producer Results
Trinseo reported Q4 2025 Latex Binders net sales of USD 176 million, down 19%, on weaker textile, paper and board demand in Europe. By Q2 2026 the same business posted USD 248 million, up 21%, driven by higher prices and volumes in Asia and North America, with Europe still weak. Synthomer's FY2025 results, published in April 2026, showed Coatings and Construction Solutions revenue down 11.5% to GBP 699.2 million while the European paper business held up and won a multi-year contract.
Specialty Binders Are Being Pulled Into Battery and CASE Uses
Latex producers are repositioning around higher-value niches. Trinseo said CASE and battery binders made up about 15% of Latex Binders net sales in Q2 2026, with volume up 3% year over year in a muted market. SB latex is a standard anode binder alongside CMC in lithium-ion cells, which gives Korean and Japanese suppliers a premium outlet, though tonnage stays small next to paper and construction.
Restraints and Challenges
European Demand Erosion and Overcapacity
Europe is the weakest large region. Trinseo described "continued weakness in paper & board and textile applications in Europe" in its second quarter 2026 results release, and Synthomer's HPPM division revenue fell 15.3% in 2025, according to its FY2025 final results. Underused European plants keep regional pricing under pressure.
Producer Balance Sheet Stress
Trinseo filed for Chapter 11 in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas in May 2026, under a prepackaged plan to remove about USD 2 billion of debt and cut about USD 140 million of annual interest. Its FY2025 Form 10-K details the restructuring costs behind the decision. Customers dual-source to manage supply risk, and that slows long-term contracting.
Substitution by Acrylic, Starch and Bio-Based Binders
Styrene-acrylic and pure acrylic dispersions win where UV stability or low odor matters, and modified starch and protein binders compete in board coating when monomer prices spike. Brand owners asking for bio-attributed content add pressure. Specialty development budgets at the large producers are moving toward these alternatives.
Feedstock Volatility and Cracker Closures
Butadiene was oversupplied in 2025, but S&P Global reports that four European steam crackers shut permanently in 2025, with Dow's Böhlen and TotalEnergies' Antwerp crackers due to close by Q4 2027. A lighter cracker slate yields less crude C4, so European latex makers may depend more on imported butadiene after 2027.
Growth Drivers
Plastic-to-Paper Packaging Substitution
Coated folding boxboard, coated recycled board and barrier-coated paper are taking share from plastic trays, clamshells and flexible film, and each tonne of coated board uses far more binder than a tonne of uncoated liner. The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, adopted in 2024 and phasing in recyclability rules from 2030, pushes brand owners such as food and personal care groups toward fiber-based formats. In Asia, board mills in China, India and Indonesia continue to add coating lines for e-commerce and food service. Trinseo's Q2 2026 Latex Binders sales growth of 21% came mainly from paper and board in Asia and North America. We estimate this driver contributes about +1.2% of annual growth to the Styrene Butadiene Latex market through 2035, and it is the main reason paper coating keeps a 3.90% CAGR despite the steady decline of graphic paper.
Polymer-Modified Mortars in Fast-Building Economies
India's construction chemicals sector, Gulf giga-projects and Southeast Asian housing programs are moving builders from site-mixed cement to factory-blended tile adhesives, waterproofing coatings and repair mortars. XSB latex improves flexural strength, adhesion and water resistance at a lower cost than redispersible acrylic powder. Apcotex Industries, which supplies Indian construction chemical formulators, approved INR 2.1 billion in November 2025 to add 37,000 tonnes per year of synthetic latex and 14,600 tonnes per year of nitrile rubber and allied products. That is roughly 36% more latex capacity at Valia, targeted for Q1 FY27. Construction and Mortar Modifiers is the fastest application at 6.10% a year. We credit this driver with roughly 0.9 percentage points of the market's yearly expansion.
Lower Monomer Costs Restoring Converter Margins
Butadiene and styrene together account for most of the variable cost of SB latex. S&P Global reported a USD 470-530 per metric ton fall in butadiene assessments across Asia, the US and Europe during 2025 and expects Asia to remain a net importer in 2026, with China reaching self-sufficiency around 2030. Cheaper monomer lets producers such as Kumho Petrochemical, LG Chem and Shandong Gaoshi price SB latex below acrylic dispersions and starch blends in many coating formulations, recovering volume lost during the 2021-2022 price spike. Mysteel's report of 100,000 tonnes per year of new high-solids capacity in China in 2025 adds supply that converters can use at lower dosing. This cost tailwind adds an estimated half a point, or +0.5%, to annual growth over 2025-2030 before fading as cracker closures tighten C4 supply.
Opportunities
Battery Anode Binders and CASE Specialties
SB latex combined with CMC remains the standard water-based binder for graphite anodes. Trinseo puts CASE and battery binders at about 15% of its Latex Binders sales. Gigafactory additions in North America, Europe and India give suppliers a margin-rich outlet for tightly specified, low-gel grades.
Bio-Attributed and Low-Emission Grades
Mass-balance bio-butadiene and bio-styrene, together with low-VOC and low residual monomer formulations, let producers charge premiums to board mills and nonwoven makers serving hygiene brands. Suppliers that certify chain-of-custody content early can lock in multi-year supply contracts similar to the European paper contract Synthomer secured in 2025.
Asia Pacific Adds More Than Half of New Demand to 2035 While Europe Grows Slowest
Asia Pacific (APAC)
Asia Pacific (APAC) holds 47.50% of global revenue, worth USD 3.73 Billion in 2025, and reaches USD 6.25 Billion by 2035 at a 5.30% CAGR, the fastest of any region. China accounts for most regional board coating and carpet demand. In 2025 China imported 428,721 tonnes of butadiene in the first ten months alone and added about 100,000 tonnes per year of high-solids SBR latex capacity. India is the swing market for construction latex, with Apcotex lifting Valia latex capacity from 103,000 tonnes to about 140,000 tonnes per year. Kumho Petrochemical and LG Chem in Korea supply paper and battery grades across the region.
North America
North America represents 19.80% of 2025 revenue, or USD 1.55 Billion, rising to USD 2.18 Billion by 2035 at 3.45% a year. North American paper and board and textile volumes helped Trinseo's Latex Binders sales rise 21% in Q2 2026. Mallard Creek Polymers and Trinseo are the main US producers serving packaging board mills, nonwovens and carpet. Growth is held back by mature carpet demand in Georgia's flooring cluster.
Europe
Europe accounts for 21.40% of the market, USD 1.68 Billion in 2025, and grows to USD 2.16 Billion by 2035, the slowest pace at 2.55% a year. In Europe, Trinseo's Q4 2025 Latex Binders sales fell 19% on weak textile, paper and board demand. Synthomer still describes SBR for European carpet and foam as difficult. Four European crackers closed in 2025, and two more are slated to shut by Q4 2027. BASF and Synthomer continue to supply coated board and construction grades.
Latin America
Latin America holds 5.60% of 2025 revenue, worth USD 0.44 Billion, and reaches USD 0.69 Billion by 2035 at a 4.60% CAGR. Brazil's eucalyptus-based board and coated paper industry is the main consumer, while Mexico's construction market adds mortar modifier demand. Much of the region's latex is imported from US Gulf Coast plants.
Middle East
The Middle East contributes 3.40% of global value, USD 0.27 Billion in 2025, climbing to USD 0.44 Billion in 2035 at 5.05% a year. Saudi Arabian and UAE construction programs drive waterproofing and tile adhesive demand, which makes the Middle East one of the faster-growing regions for the Construction and Mortar Modifiers segment.
Africa
Africa is the smallest region with 2.30% of revenue, USD 0.18 Billion in 2025, and grows to USD 0.30 Billion by 2035 at 5.20% a year. Egypt, South Africa and Nigeria lead African demand from carpet backing, packaging board and dry-mix mortar. Almost all supply is imported from Europe and Asia.
| Region | 2025 | 2025 share | 2035 | CAGR 2025-2035 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Asia Pacific (APAC) | USD 3.73 Billion | 47.50% | USD 6.25 Billion | 5.30% |
| North America | USD 1.55 Billion | 19.80% | USD 2.18 Billion | 3.45% |
| Europe | USD 1.68 Billion | 21.40% | USD 2.16 Billion | 2.55% |

In November 2025, Apcotex Industries approved INR 2.1 billion of capex at Valia, Gujarat, adding 37,000 tonnes per year of synthetic latex and 14,600 tonnes per year of nitrile rubber and allied products by Q1 FY27. (Machinist)
In May 2025, Asahi Kasei announced it will end SB latex production by September 2027 as part of a structural transformation plan. (European Rubber Journal)
Five Integrated Producers Set Prices, but Asian Specialists Are Gaining Volume
The Styrene Butadiene Latex industry is moderately concentrated. Large integrated chemical groups control most Western capacity, while Korean, Chinese and Indian producers add capacity close to fast-growing converters. Competition rests on monomer integration, coater runnability, carboxylation chemistry and supply reliability, and the 2025-2026 period has reshuffled positions sharply.
Global Dispersion Leaders
Trinseo is one of the largest merchant SB latex suppliers, with Latex Binders sales of USD 248 million in Q2 2026 alone. It is known for paper and board, carpet and CASE binders, and is reorganizing under a prepackaged Chapter 11 plan. BASF supplies Styronal and Acronal dispersions to paper, construction and adhesives customers from plants in Europe, Asia and the Americas, and it competes on formulation support. Synthomer, now focused on coatings, construction and adhesive specialties, has cut its manufacturing footprint and remains a major supplier of European paper latex.
Asian Integrated Producers
Kumho Petrochemical of Korea is among the largest SB latex producers in Asia, integrated into butadiene and supplying paper coating and glove-adjacent markets. LG Chem offers SB latex for paper coating and battery anode binders. Zeon and ENEOS Materials, the former JSR elastomers business, bring Japanese emulsion know-how, though Zeon is narrowing its emulsion portfolio, and Asahi Kasei will leave SB latex by September 2027.
Regional Challengers
Shandong Gaoshi Technology is a leading Chinese carboxylated latex maker for board coating, benefiting from domestic butadiene surpluses. Apcotex Industries, India's main synthetic latex producer, serves paper, tire cord and construction customers and is adding 37,000 tonnes per year at Valia. Mallard Creek Polymers in the United States supplies carboxylated SB latex for nonwovens, carpet and paper, while Sibur supplies Russian and CIS demand.
Specialty and Niche Suppliers
OMNOVA Solutions, now part of Synthomer, built its reputation in carpet and paper latex. Smaller formulators compete in foam, tire dip and construction admixtures where technical service matters more than scale. We expect further exits by Japanese and European producers before 2030, which will raise utilization at Korean, Chinese and Indian plants.

Primary Interview Insights
How is coated board demand affecting latex purchases?
Our assessment is that latex use per tonne of coated board is broadly stable, so demand follows tonnage in food service and e-commerce grades. Trinseo's 21% rise in Q2 2026 latex binders sales on paper, board and textile demand supports this view.
Why are formulators switching to XSB in mortars?
Liquid XSB gives mortars and tile adhesives adhesion and flexibility at a lower cost than redispersible powders in many formulations. That is why we model Construction and Mortar Modifiers as the fastest application at 6.10% CAGR.
How have butadiene prices changed contracts?
S&P Global reported butadiene prices down USD 470-530 per tonne in 2025, and formula-linked latex contracts pass such moves through with a lag. We expect buyers to favor index-linked contracts while European cracker capacity keeps shrinking.
How are buyers reacting to producer restructurings?
Trinseo's May 2026 Chapter 11 filing and the planned exits by Asahi Kasei and Zeon raise supply-security questions for converters. In our view, dual sourcing and extra qualification work for critical grades will become normal practice.
Is there demand for bio-attributed SB latex?
Bio-attributed, mass-balance latex grades are most relevant for hygiene nonwovens and premium packaging, where brand owners have sustainability targets. Commodity carpet and graphic paper buyers stay price-driven, so we expect certified grades to remain a premium niche.
