Silicone rubber is growing more than twice as fast as general purpose elastomers, led by liquid grades for EVs and medical parts

Global silicone rubber sales reached USD 9.42 Billion in 2025 by Radial Insights' estimate, climbing to USD 10.02 Billion in 2026 and USD 17.52 Billion by 2035, a 6.40% CAGR. The silicone rubber market outpaces most elastomers because it serves heat, fire and biocompatibility needs that carbon-based rubbers cannot meet.

Silicone rubber is built on a siloxane backbone made from dimethylcyclosiloxane (DMC), which is itself produced from metallurgical silicon and methyl chloride. China dominates that upstream chain: Chinese DMC capacity reached about 3.44 million tonnes per year at the end of 2024, nearly double the 2020 level, against roughly 0.8 million tonnes outside China. Oversupply kept DMC prices near historic lows through 2025, which squeezed producer margins but made silicone rubber cheaper for converters and widened its use in consumer and automotive parts.

Our scope covers high temperature vulcanized (HTV, also called high consistency rubber or HCR), liquid silicone rubber (LSR) and room temperature vulcanized (RTV) silicone rubber sold as base polymers, compounds and ready-to-mold kits. Values are measured at the producer and compounder selling price, and all figures are stated in USD Billion. We exclude silicone fluids, resins, sealants sold as construction caulks, silanes and finished molded parts, as well as fluorosilicone grades.

Liquid silicone rubber is the fastest growing type at 8.30% CAGR, because injection molding of LSR suits high-volume EV seals, connector gaskets, wearables and medical components. By application, automotive and EV components grow fastest at 8.10%. Asia Pacific is the fastest growing region at 7.20%, supported by China's EV output and electronics assembly.

Supply is changing hands. Elkem agreed in February 2026 to sell most of its silicones division to Bluestar and completed the deal in April 2026, Wacker raised silicone prices from April 2026, and Dow committed about USD 100 million in June 2026 to specialty silicones, including LSR capacity in the United States and China.

Liquid silicone rubber leads type growth at 8.30% CAGR

HTV silicone rubber remains the largest type by volume and grows at 5.20%, carried by extruded profiles, cable insulation, keypads and composite insulators. LSR grows at 8.30% because two-part liquid systems run in automated injection cells with short cycle times and little flash, which suits EV connector seals, battery vent gaskets, baby care items and medical parts. RTV grows at 5.70% on mold making, potting and electronics encapsulation. Dow, Wacker, Shin-Etsu and Momentive are all adding LSR or specialty capacity rather than commodity HTV.

Medical grade is the fastest grade at 7.60% CAGR

Industrial grade silicone rubber accounts for most tonnage and grows at 6.00%. Medical grade grows at 7.60% as catheters, respiratory masks, implants and drug delivery components move to platinum-cured materials with full traceability. Food contact grade grows at 6.10% on bakeware, seals in food processing and infant products, with demand tied to consumer spending in Asia.

Automotive and EV components grow fastest by application at 8.10%

Automotive and EV components grow at 8.10%: each EV uses silicone rubber in battery pack seals, thermal pads, fire barriers, high voltage cable jackets and charging port gaskets. Electrical and electronics grow at 7.00% with grid insulators and electronics encapsulation, and medical and healthcare grow at 7.50%. Consumer goods rise at 5.40%, industrial machinery at 5.00% and construction at 4.90%, the slowest, because building activity in China and Europe stayed weak in 2025.

Platinum addition cure grows at 7.80%, against 4.80% for peroxide cure

Platinum (addition) cure systems grow at 7.80% because they leave no peroxide by-products, need no post-cure for many parts and meet medical and food rules. Peroxide cure, used in most HTV compounds, grows at 4.80%. Condensation cure, common in RTV mold making and sealing, grows at 5.30%.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Ownership of silicone capacity is consolidating in China

Elkem agreed on 13 February 2026 to sell the majority of its Silicones division to Bluestar, paid for by redeeming Bluestar's 338,338,536 Elkem shares, and announced completion on 30 April 2026. The deal moves one of Europe's main silicone rubber producers under Chinese ownership. Hoshine Silicon, the largest integrated producer, ended 2025 with about 1.73 million tonnes of silicone capacity.

Producers are pushing prices up after a long trough

Wacker announced in March 2026 that it would raise prices on its silicone products from 1 April 2026, citing energy, raw material and logistics costs and conflict in the Middle East. Elkem reported that Chinese silicone prices rose in late 2025 because supply fell, even with weak demand. Price recovery supports value growth after a period when Chinese DMC traded near record lows.

Capital is going to LSR and electronics grades

Dow said in June 2026 it is investing about USD 100 million in specialty silicones through 2027, including LSR expansions at Carrollton, Kentucky and Zhangjiagang, China, which are scheduled to start up in 2027. Wacker has commissioned specialty silicone plants in Tsukuba, Japan and Jincheon, South Korea, and is building an RTV high-performance silicones plant in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic. Investment is concentrated in grades for mobility, electronics and healthcare.

Silicone rubber parts for EV battery safety are scaling up

Shin-Etsu reported that mass production of silicone molded fire-prevention cushions for EV batteries has started in earnest, and that molded silicone rubber parts for catheters are also growing. Battery makers use silicone foams, pads and gaskets to slow thermal runaway between cells. The IEA expected more than 20 million electric car sales in 2025, more than a quarter of all new cars.

Restraints and Challenges

Chinese overcapacity depresses producer margins

Chinese DMC capacity of about 3.44 million tonnes per year ran at only about 67% utilization in 2024. Hoshine Silicon reported a 2025 net loss of CNY 2.99 billion on revenue of CNY 20.5 billion, with a gross margin of 11.77% on silicones. Wacker's Silicones segment EBITDA was EUR 335.7 million in 2025, a 12.3% margin. Thin margins limit how fast Western producers can expand capacity.

Siloxane restrictions in the EU raise compliance costs

Under Regulation (EU) 2024/1328, D4, D5 and D6 cyclic siloxanes cannot be placed on the market at 0.1% or more in mixtures from 6 June 2026, with later dates for cosmetics and medical devices. Silicone rubber makers must control residual cyclics in their polymers and document levels for customers, which adds testing and stripping costs.

Weak construction and industrial demand in mature markets

Wacker reported Silicones segment sales of EUR 2,733.2 million in 2025, down 2.6%, citing weak demand from automotive, construction and textiles. Construction is the slowest application in our forecast at 4.90%, and European building activity has yet to recover.

EV demand concentration exposes suppliers to auto cycles

A rising share of LSR growth depends on EV programs. The IEA Global EV Outlook 2025 shows China accounting for more than 11 million of about 17 million electric cars sold in 2024. Any slowdown in Chinese EV output or a shift in battery pack design toward fewer gaskets would hit silicone rubber volumes quickly.

Growth Drivers

EV battery packs, thermal systems and high voltage cables need silicone rubber

Electric vehicles use silicone rubber where heat, flame and electrical insulation matter: battery pack seals and vents, cell-to-cell fire barriers, thermal interface pads, high voltage cable jackets, charging inlets and e-motor parts. The IEA counted about 17 million electric car sales in 2024, more than 20% of global car sales, and expected over 20 million in 2025. Dow markets primerless Silastic LSR for EV seals and battery vent gaskets, and Shin-Etsu has scaled up molded fire-prevention cushions for EV batteries. Radial Insights estimates EV content adds roughly +1.4% to the market's yearly growth, the largest single driver.

Medical devices and wearables are moving to platinum-cured LSR

Medical device makers favor platinum-cured silicone rubber for catheters, tubing, respiratory masks, seals in drug delivery pens and skin-contact wearables because it is biocompatible, sterilizable and stable over long implant periods. Shin-Etsu reported growth in molded silicone rubber products for medical uses such as catheters, and Trelleborg and Freudenberg have built dedicated LSR molding operations for healthcare. Avantor's NuSil unit supplies implant-grade silicones. We attribute about +0.7% of annual CAGR to healthcare demand, supported by aging populations in Japan, Europe and China.

Grid electrification and electronics expand insulating and potting uses

HTV silicone rubber is the standard material for composite insulators, surge arrester housings and cable accessories on high voltage lines, and RTV and LSR are used to pot and encapsulate power electronics, LEDs and sensors. Dow's 2026 investment plan includes electronics silicone projects at Songjiang and Fukui in 2026, alongside work at Auburn and Zhangjiagang scheduled for 2027. Grid build-out for renewables and data center power demand supports this segment, which we estimate contributes close to +0.6% of growth each year.

Opportunities

PFAS restrictions open doors for silicone alternatives

The EU's universal PFAS restriction proposal, updated in June 2025 to cover more than 10,000 substances, with ECHA targeting a final opinion in 2026, puts some fluoropolymer and fluoroelastomer uses under pressure. Silicone rubber can replace fluorinated materials in selected seals, coatings and release surfaces where chemical resistance needs are moderate, and Shin-Etsu is already working on PFAS alternatives in silicone production.

Self-adhesive and multi-material LSR for automated molding

Self-bonding LSR grades that adhere to thermoplastics in two-shot molding cut assembly steps for connectors, housings and consumer electronics. Converters in China, Germany and the United States are adding multi-material cells, which favors suppliers with broad LSR portfolios.

Asia Pacific holds half of silicone rubber demand and grows fastest

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) holds a 50.60% share of the silicone rubber market in 2025, worth USD 4.77 Billion. The APAC market grows to USD 9.55 Billion by 2035 at a 7.20% CAGR, the fastest of any region. China anchors the region with about 3.44 million tonnes per year of DMC capacity and more than 11 million EV sales in 2024, while Japan's Shin-Etsu and Korea's KCC supply specialty grades for electronics and medical uses.

North America

North America accounts for a 20.30% share in 2025, or USD 1.91 Billion, rising to USD 3.30 Billion by 2035 at a 5.60% CAGR. North American capacity is being expanded by Dow, which plans LSR growth at Carrollton, Kentucky and electronics silicone work at Auburn, Michigan as part of its USD 100 million program. Medical device clusters in Minnesota, Massachusetts and California, and Momentive's base in New York, support high-value grades.

Europe

In 2025, Europe has a 21.40% share, worth USD 2.02 Billion, reaching USD 3.38 Billion by 2035 at a 5.30% CAGR. European demand is led by Germany, where Wacker posted Silicones segment sales of EUR 2,733.2 million in 2025. European converters face the D4, D5 and D6 restriction from 6 June 2026, and Wacker is adding an RTV high-performance plant in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic.

Latin America

In 2025, Latin America holds a 3.60% share, or USD 0.34 Billion, growing to USD 0.61 Billion by 2035 at a 6.00% CAGR. Latin American demand comes mainly from Brazil and Mexico, where automotive wiring, appliance seals and medical disposables are produced for local and US markets. Mexico's auto parts exports to the United States add EV-related silicone content each year.

Middle East

The Middle East has a 2.50% share in 2025, worth USD 0.24 Billion, rising to USD 0.43 Billion by 2035 at a 6.30% CAGR. Middle East growth comes from power grid expansion in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, where silicone composite insulators suit hot, dusty and coastal conditions, and from large construction and data center projects.

Africa

In 2025, Africa accounts for a 1.60% share, or USD 0.15 Billion, and reaches USD 0.28 Billion by 2035 at a 6.50% CAGR. African demand centers on South Africa, Egypt, Morocco and Nigeria, with silicone rubber used in transmission line insulators, cable accessories and automotive wiring harness plants in Morocco and South Africa.

Four Western and Japanese majors lead specialty silicone rubber, while Chinese producers dominate upstream volume

The silicone rubber market has two layers. Integrated producers in China control most DMC and HTV base polymer volume, while Wacker, Dow, Shin-Etsu and Momentive lead in LSR, medical and electronics grades, where qualification and technical service matter more than price.

Global specialty leaders

Wacker Chemie sells HTV, LSR and RTV under the Elastosil brand and is integrated back into siloxanes; its Silicones segment had 2025 sales of EUR 2,733.2 million. Dow sells Silastic LSR and Dowsil products, including primerless LSR for EV seals, and is spending about USD 100 million on specialty capacity. Shin-Etsu Chemical supplies HTV and LSR and is a leader in molded silicone parts for EV battery safety and medical devices. Momentive Performance Materials, majority owned by KCC Corporation, markets Silopren LSR and medical and automotive grades.

Chinese integrated producers

Hoshine Silicon is the largest integrated producer from metallurgical silicon to silicones, with about 1.73 million tonnes of silicone capacity at the end of 2025. Bluestar Silicones now owns the former Elkem silicones assets in France, China and elsewhere after the April 2026 deal closed. Zhejiang Xinan Chemical and Dongyue Group run large DMC and HTV operations. These firms compete on scale and cost in base polymers and general purpose compounds.

European diversified suppliers

Elkem keeps a minority role in silicones after the sale and now focuses on silicon products and carbon. KCC Corporation in Korea supplies silicone rubber in Asia and controls Momentive globally. These groups give buyers alternatives to Chinese base polymer for automotive and electrical customers that require dual sourcing.

Medical and precision LSR converters

Trelleborg molds LSR components for medical and life science customers and added capacity through its purchase of Baron Group in 2024. Freudenberg supplies LSR medical components and seals, and Avantor's NuSil unit provides implant-grade silicones. These converters shape demand for platinum-cured LSR and set quality expectations for raw material suppliers.
