Active and nano grades are lifting the value of a slow-volume curing activator

Global sales of Rubber Grade Zinc Oxide reached USD 2.86 Billion in 2025 by Radial Insights estimates, rising to USD 2.98 Billion in 2026 and USD 4.38 Billion by 2035 at a 4.35% CAGR. Volume grows more slowly than value, because zinc prices and a richer grade mix both lift revenue per tonne.

Zinc oxide is the standard activator in sulfur vulcanization. Compounders add it with stearic acid so that accelerators work efficiently and crosslinks form at the right speed and density. A conventional micron-grade tire compound settles at about 3 parts per hundred rubber (phr), while nano grades can bring that down to 1 to 2 phr, according to Shanghai Metals Market technical coverage. Tires are by far the largest outlet. Conveyor belts, automotive hoses, shoe soles, molded seals and dipped latex goods absorb the rest.

Scope covers zinc oxide produced by the French (indirect) process, the American (direct) process, wet chemical routes and active or nano grades, sold as powder, pellets, granules or pre-dispersed masterbatch to rubber compounders worldwide. Values are taken at the producer gate in current US dollars. We exclude zinc oxide sold into ceramics, glass, paints, animal feed, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and sunscreens, as well as low-grade zinc oxide and calcine fed to zinc smelters. Organic zinc activators such as zinc stearate are also outside the count.

Active and nano zinc oxide is the fastest-growing process segment at a 6.85% CAGR, as tire makers try to hold cure performance while cutting zinc loadings. Asia Pacific (APAC) is the fastest-growing region at a 4.98% CAGR, supported by Chinese, Indian and Southeast Asian tire capacity that keeps feeding export markets. India alone shipped a record Rs 27,312 crore of tires in FY2025-26, the Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA) reported.

French process zinc oxide still leads by process, but active and nano grades grow fastest

The French (indirect) process, which burns refined zinc metal or high-grade secondary zinc, remains the workhorse for tire compounds because it delivers consistent purity and low lead and cadmium. It grows at 4.10%, in line with tire output plus price. The American (direct) process, built on zinc ores and residues, grows at 3.70% because its higher impurity levels limit it in premium radial compounds. Wet chemical routes expand at 5.20% as recyclers turn zinc ash, dross and spent galvanizing residues into high-surface-area grades. Active and Nano Zinc Oxide leads at 6.85%. Work such as the SafeVulca program at the University of Milano-Bicocca, which anchors zinc oxide nanoparticles on silica, targets a 50% cut in conventional zinc oxide with up to 10% better curing and mechanical properties.

Masterbatch form outpaces loose powder as mixing rooms push for clean, exact dosing

Powder remains the base form and grows at 3.80%, held back by dust, slower incorporation and losses on open mills. Pellets and Granules grow at 4.75% as tire plants automate weighing and want free-flowing material. Masterbatch and Pre-dispersed grades, typically zinc oxide bound in a polymer carrier at high loading, grow at 5.90%. They cost more per kilogram of zinc, yet they shorten mixing cycles and improve dispersion, and compounders need both to cut zinc loadings without risking under-cure.

Tires anchor demand while latex products post the quickest gains

Tires are the core application and grow at 4.45%, tracking global light vehicle output of 92.4 million units in 2025 (up 4%, per Continental's 2025 annual report) and a replacement market that rose about 1%. Latex Products grow at 4.90% on gloves and other dipped goods made in Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam, where zinc oxide also serves as a crosslinking aid. Belts and Hoses grow at 4.05% on automotive and mining conveyor demand. Industrial Rubber Goods, including seals, mounts and roll covers, grow at 4.20%. Footwear is slowest at 3.60%, because shoe soles are moving toward EVA and thermoplastic blends that use little or no zinc oxide.

Truck, bus and off-the-road tires grow faster than passenger tires

Passenger Car Tires grow at 4.30%. Truck and Bus Tires grow at 4.70%, because their thicker natural rubber treads and casings carry heavier zinc loadings, and US replacement truck shipments rose 7.9% to 25.2 million units in 2025. OTR and Other Tires lead at 4.95% on mining, construction and agricultural fleets in Asia, Africa and Latin America, where large radial OTR tires use more zinc oxide per tire than any other type.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Zinc oxide buyers are now paying four-year-high zinc prices

LME three-month zinc rose 2.3% to USD 3,610 per tonne on 14 May 2026, touching USD 3,616.5 intraday, its highest level since August 2022. The trigger was the temporary suspension of Nexa Resources' 344,400 tonne per year Cajamarquilla smelter in Peru after a fire, along with reduced operating rates at Glencore's Kazzinc plants in Kazakhstan. By 1 September 2026, LME cash zinc was approaching USD 3,900 per tonne after five straight monthly gains and a year-to-date rise above 25%.

Indian producers are adding large greenfield capacity aimed at tire makers

J.G. Chemicals, which holds about 30% of the Indian zinc oxide market, approved an INR 100 crore greenfield plant at Dahej, Gujarat in August 2025. Reports in October 2026 put the new site at 40,000 MTPA, lifting the company's total zinc oxide capacity to 110,000 MTPA. The company reported FY2025-26 revenue of INR 972.9 crore, up from INR 847.9 crore, and switched to a cost pass-through model from 1 April 2026 after Middle East zinc dross imports froze in March 2026.

Low-zinc vulcanization research is moving from the lab toward compound trials

In April 2025, Rubber World published a study on reducing zinc oxide across ten compounds of a model passenger car radial tire. Silox, the Belgian zinc and sulfur chemicals group, used the August 2025 issue to argue that its zinc oxide grades can support lower-carbon vulcanization under tighter rules. The SafeVulca program's silica-anchored nano activator aims to halve conventional zinc oxide loadings. Lower phr levels reduce tonnage per tire, but they push buyers toward active grades that sell at a premium, so value holds up better than volume.

Producers are investing in recycling-based feedstock and application research

Silox opened a Research and Innovation Centre in Gujarat in March 2025 with an initial investment of about EUR 2 million, covering circular product design and recovery of critical metals from waste streams. J.G. Chemicals describes its Dahej project as using advanced recycling technologies. EverZinc, which merged with US Zinc under Aterian Investment Partners and now calls itself the world's largest maker of zinc chemical products, also draws heavily on secondary zinc.

Restraints and Challenges

Zinc price spikes squeeze compounders and delay pass-through

The International Lead and Zinc Study Group's April 2026 forecast expected 2026 refined zinc demand of 14.00 million tonnes against output of 13.99 million tonnes, a deficit of 19,000 tonnes, before the Peruvian and Kazakh outages hit. LME zinc stocks fell to 110,875 tonnes in May 2026, under three days of global use. Tire makers on quarterly contracts absorb these swings with a lag, and smaller hose, belt and footwear compounders often cut loadings or switch suppliers to protect margins.

Aquatic toxicity classification raises compliance costs in Europe

Under the EU CLP Regulation, zinc oxide carries a harmonized Aquatic Acute 1 and Aquatic Chronic 1 classification. Germany's Federal Environment Agency (UBA), in its REACH substance evaluation of zinc oxide nanoforms published in April 2024, confirmed that this classification also applies to nanoforms and said a nano-specific effect on toxicity cannot be ruled out. This adds labeling, wastewater and dossier costs, and it gives tire makers a regulatory reason to cut zinc content.

Flat tire volumes in mature markets cap tonnage growth

The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association's December 2025 forecast put 2025 shipments at 337.4 million units, against 337.3 million in 2024. Original equipment truck tires fell 18.1% and OE passenger tires fell 3.5%. In Europe, ETRMA data showed consumer replacement sales down 1% to 110.3 million units in the first half of 2025, and truck tire volumes 14.3% below first-half 2019 levels. Mature-market zinc oxide demand therefore depends on price and grade mix more than on tonnage.

Feedstock disruptions hit secondary-zinc producers

Many rubber-grade producers rely on zinc dross, ash and skimmings from galvanizers. J.G. Chemicals reported that Middle East dross imports froze in March 2026 and European shipments were delayed, forcing domestic purchases at higher LME-linked prices that weighed on fourth-quarter margins.

Growth Drivers

Asian tire capacity and export growth keep zinc oxide tonnage rising

Tire output keeps moving to China, India, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia, and zinc oxide demand follows. Global light vehicle production rose 4% to 92.4 million units in 2025, with China up 10%, according to Continental's 2025 annual report. ATMA data show Indian tire exports reached a record Rs 27,312 crore in FY2025-26, up 9%, with the United States taking 15% of export value even after higher US tariffs in August 2025. Truck and bus tire imports into the EU27 and UK from outside Europe rose almost 15% in the first five months of 2025, ETRMA reported, led by Thailand and Vietnam. Every new radial line in these countries needs a local, qualified zinc oxide source, which is why J.G. Chemicals built the 40,000 MTPA Dahej plant. We estimate this capacity shift adds about +1.4% of annual growth to the Rubber Grade Zinc Oxide market through 2035, and most of it lands in Asia Pacific.

Replacement and commercial tire demand favors zinc-heavy compounds

Replacement tires make up most global tire volume, and that share has held steady even as new-vehicle output swings. USTMA reported that US replacement truck tire shipments rose 7.9% to 25.2 million units in 2025 and replacement light truck shipments rose 2.9% to 37.8 million, while OE truck tires fell 18.1%. Truck, bus and OTR tires use natural-rubber-rich treads and thick casings that need more activator per tire than passenger tires, so a shift toward replacement commercial and off-road fitments raises zinc oxide use per tire. We attribute roughly one percentage point of the yearly CAGR to this commercial and replacement mix, about +1.0% per year.

The push to lower zinc loadings is shifting demand to active, nano and masterbatch grades

Low-zinc research reduces tonnage, but it raises spending on higher-value grades. The SafeVulca concept targets a 50% cut in conventional zinc oxide with up to 10% better curing and mechanical properties. Silox promotes its zinc oxide line for lower-carbon vulcanization, and Rubber World's April 2025 study looked at cutting zinc oxide across ten passenger tire compounds. The CLP Aquatic Chronic 1 classification and scrutiny of tire wear particles in Europe give compounders a reason to act. Tire makers that drop from 3 phr of micron grade to 1 to 2 phr of nano or pre-dispersed grade pay more per kilogram of zinc, often several times more for specialty material. We estimate this grade upgrade contributes close to +0.9 points of the 4.35% CAGR, and it is the main reason value growth stays ahead of volume.

Opportunities

Recycled-zinc grades with verified carbon footprints

Tire makers are setting recycled-content and Scope 3 targets for raw materials. Producers that turn galvanizing dross and zinc ash into French process or wet chemical rubber grades, as J.G. Chemicals plans at Dahej and Silox targets through its Gujarat research centre, can sell lower-carbon zinc oxide with supply less exposed to LME-linked primary metal.

Pre-dispersed zinc oxide for Southeast Asian and African compounders

Fast-growing compounders in Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Egypt and South Africa often mix on older equipment, where dispersion problems waste zinc. Masterbatch and Pre-dispersed grades, growing at a 5.90% CAGR, let these plants cut loadings, reduce dust and meet export-customer quality audits.

Asia Pacific supplies most rubber-grade zinc oxide demand and grows fastest

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) holds a 58.40% share of the Rubber Grade Zinc Oxide market in 2025, worth USD 1,670 Million. Asia Pacific (APAC) is forecast to reach USD 2,715 Million by 2035 at a 4.98% CAGR, the fastest of any region. China's light vehicle output rose 10% in 2025, and India's tire exports reached a record Rs 27,312 crore in FY2025-26. J.G. Chemicals now runs 110,000 MTPA of zinc oxide capacity in India, and Thai and Vietnamese truck tire exports into Europe rose almost 15% in the first five months of 2025.

North America

North America accounts for a 13.20% share in 2025, equal to USD 378 Million. North America is projected to reach USD 517 Million in 2035, a 3.20% CAGR. US tire shipments hit a record 337.4 million units in 2025, and US refined zinc demand rose 7% that year, according to the ILZSG. EverZinc, which combined with US Zinc and is based in Houston, operates Texas and Tennessee plants, while Zochem supplies Canadian and US compounders from Ontario.

Europe

Europe holds a 15.10% share, or USD 432 Million, in 2025. Europe grows at the slowest pace, a 2.80% CAGR, reaching USD 569 Million by 2035. ETRMA reported first-half 2025 consumer replacement sales down 1% to 110.3 million units and truck tires 14.3% below 2019 levels, while full-year summer tire replacement fell 7%. CLP aquatic classification and tire wear scrutiny push European compounders toward lower loadings, which favors suppliers such as Grillo-Werke, EverZinc and Silox.

Latin America

Latin America holds a 6.30% share, worth USD 180 Million in 2025. Latin America is expected to reach USD 265 Million by 2035 at a 3.95% CAGR. Brazil took 5% of India's FY2025-26 tire export value, a sign of import competition for local tire plants, while mining fleets in Chile and Peru support OTR demand. The May 2026 fire at Nexa's 344,400 tonne per year Cajamarquilla smelter in Peru showed how close local zinc supply sits to these buyers.

Middle East

The Middle East holds a 3.90% share, or USD 112 Million, in 2025. The Middle East is forecast to reach USD 174 Million by 2035, growing at a 4.55% CAGR. New tire projects in Saudi Arabia and Turkey's export-focused tire plants support demand. The region is also an exporter of zinc dross to Indian producers, and those flows froze in March 2026, according to J.G. Chemicals.

Africa

Africa accounts for a 3.10% share, equal to USD 89 Million in 2025. Africa is projected to reach USD 142 Million by 2035 at a 4.80% CAGR, the second-fastest regional rate. Demand comes from tire and conveyor belt plants in South Africa and Egypt and from mining fleets that wear through OTR tires and conveyor belts quickly.

A few integrated zinc chemical groups lead, while Indian and Asian producers gain share

The Rubber Grade Zinc Oxide market is moderately concentrated. A small group of multinational zinc chemical producers serves global tire makers under multi-year qualification agreements. Regional producers compete on delivered cost and secondary-zinc access, and specialty compounders win business with dispersed and active grades.

Global zinc chemical groups

EverZinc, created when Aterian Investment Partners combined EverZinc with US Zinc and headquartered in Houston, describes itself as the world's largest maker of zinc chemical products. Its network spans sites in Belgium, Canada, China, the Netherlands, Norway and Malaysia plus Texas and Tennessee, giving it French process, direct and fine powder capability close to most tire clusters. Silox, based in Belgium with operations in India, is known for zinc and sulfur chemicals and the recycling of non-ferrous residues, and it now markets zinc oxide for lower-carbon vulcanization. Grillo-Werke in Germany is a long-standing European supplier of rubber-grade zinc oxide to tire and technical rubber compounders.

Indian producers scaling with tire exports

J.G. Chemicals is India's largest zinc oxide manufacturer with about 30% of the domestic market. It reported FY2025-26 revenue of INR 972.9 crore, and its Dahej plant lifted capacity to 110,000 MTPA. Its customers are mainly tire makers on long-term contracts. Rubamin, a Vadodara-based zinc chemicals and hydrometallurgy specialist, signed an exclusive North American partnership with Distil in March 2026. That deal covers personal care grades, but it shows how Indian producers are building Western distribution that could later extend to rubber grades.

North American and Japanese specialists

Zochem, in Brampton, Ontario, is a French process producer that sells rubber grades to North American compounders through distributors such as Palmer Holland. Hakusui Tech and Sakai Chemical Industry in Japan are known for high-purity and fine-particle zinc oxide used in demanding rubber and electronic applications. Pan-Continental Chemical in Taiwan supplies indirect process zinc oxide to Asian tire and rubber goods makers.

Dispersion and Chinese volume players

Lanxess, through its Rhein Chemie additives business, is known for pre-dispersed rubber chemicals that help compounders dose activators exactly and cut dust. Weifang Longda Zinc Industry in Shandong is among the larger Chinese producers serving the country's tire belt, where price competition is strongest.
