Silicone and Aerospace Grades Lift Elastomer-Coated Textiles Toward USD 8.59 Billion as Ownership Consolidates
Elastomer-coated textiles generated USD 5.48 Billion of global sales in 2025, and Radial Insights expects the rubber coated fabrics market to reach USD 5.73 Billion in 2026 and USD 8.59 Billion by 2035, compounding at 4.60% a year.
Rubber coated fabrics are woven, knitted or nonwoven textiles coated, calendered or laminated with an elastomer such as neoprene (polychloroprene), silicone, EPDM, nitrile or natural rubber. The coating gives the textile air and liquid impermeability, flex life, heat or chemical resistance and grip, while the fabric carries tensile load. The products end up in aircraft escape slides and life rafts, inflatable boats, diaphragms and seals, expansion joints and bellows, protective clothing, industrial covers and silicone-coated automotive airbag cushions. Our value covers coated roll goods sold by coaters to fabricators and original equipment makers. PVC- and polyurethane-coated fabrics, tire cord fabric and finished conveyor belts are excluded, because Radial Insights tracks them in separate studies.
Silicone coated fabrics are the fastest growing rubber type at a 6.10% CAGR from 2025 to 2035, supported by airbag cushions, high-temperature bellows and medical device fabrics. Asia Pacific (APAC) leads with a 44.20% share in 2025 and is also the fastest growing region at 5.55% a year, as airbag fabric and industrial hose and seal production keep moving to China, India, South Korea and Southeast Asia.
The supplier base is going through its biggest ownership change in a decade. Continental agreed in July 2026 to sell its ContiTech group sector, which includes coated fabrics operations, to Lone Star Funds at an enterprise value of EUR 4.0 billion. Michelin completed its purchase of US coated fabrics maker Cooley Group in January 2026, and Trelleborg opened a new engineered coated fabrics plant in Forest City, North Carolina, in May 2026.
Regulation is the main uncertainty. The European Chemicals Agency published a revised restriction proposal on PFAS in August 2025 that added technical textiles to the sectors assessed. Fluoropolymer and fluoroelastomer topcoats used on some rubber coated fabrics could face time-limited derogations, which pushes coaters toward silicone and other fluorine-free elastomers and helps explain the rubber-type growth gap we forecast.

Silicone Grows at 6.10% While Neoprene Holds the Installed Base
Neoprene remains the workhorse elastomer for inflatable boats, diaphragms and protective covers because of its balance of weathering, flame and oil resistance, but it grows at only 3.90% a year as new projects choose alternatives. Silicone grows fastest at 6.10% because it handles temperatures above 200 degrees Celsius, meets medical biocompatibility needs and is the standard coating for airbag cushions. EPDM grows at 4.70% on water infrastructure and outdoor membranes, nitrile at 4.20% on fuel and oil handling, and natural rubber and other elastomers at 3.20%.
Aramid and Glass Carriers Expand at 5.80% on Heat and Fire Duties
Polyester is the largest substrate and grows at 4.90% a year thanks to low cost and good dimensional stability. Nylon grows at 4.40%, anchored in airbag and escape slide fabrics where tear strength matters most. Aramid and glass fiber carriers grow at 5.80% because exhaust bellows, fire curtains and battery thermal barriers need fabric that will not melt. Cotton and blends grow at just 2.60% and keep losing share in industrial uses.
Inflatables and Escape Slides Lead Applications at 5.30%
Inflatables, life rafts and escape slides grow fastest because aircraft deliveries are recovering and each new narrowbody needs several slides and rafts. Expansion joints, bellows and ducting grow at 4.80%, airbag cushions at 4.60% in line with light vehicle output and higher airbag counts per car, diaphragms, seals and gaskets at 4.40%, and protective clothing and industrial covers at 4.10%.

Market Dynamics
Market Trends
Large Groups Are Buying Specialist Coaters
Michelin announced terms to buy Cooley Group on January 2, 2026 and completed the deal on January 22, 2026. Cooley, based in Rhode Island, had 2025 revenue of USD 168 million, about 300 employees and four plants in the United States and Canada. The purchase adds to Michelin's earlier EUR 700 million acquisition of Flex Composite Group and builds a large engineered fabrics unit outside tires.
New Plants Are Solvent-Free and Run on Renewable Power
Trelleborg held the grand opening of its Forest City, North Carolina facility on May 6, 2026. The site uses extrusion coating with a pilot line and a full-scale line, runs without solvents and uses renewable electricity, serving aerospace, medical, protective equipment and industrial customers. Buyers told us solvent-free production is becoming a purchasing criterion for aerospace and healthcare programs.
Automotive Rubber Businesses Are Changing Hands
At its Capital Market Day in June 2025, Continental said it planned to sell ContiTech in 2026 after selling its Original Equipment Solutions unit. In July 2026 it signed an agreement with Lone Star Funds at an enterprise value of EUR 4.0 billion plus up to EUR 250 million in performance-based payments, with closing targeted by the end of 2026. Customers expect few short-term supply changes but more focus on profitable industrial coated fabric lines.
Aircraft Output Is Rising Again
Airbus delivered 793 commercial aircraft in 2025, up 4% from 2024, according to its January 2026 release. Every delivery needs escape slides, slide rafts and life vests made from coated nylon, and replacement cycles on the existing fleet add steady aftermarket demand for rubber coated fabrics.
Restraints and Challenges
PFAS Restrictions Could Remove Some Topcoats
ECHA's revised PFAS restriction proposal, published on August 20, 2025, added technical textiles to the assessed sectors and set out derogation periods of 6.5, 13.5 or 23.5 years under its preferred option. Coaters using fluoroelastomer or fluoropolymer topcoats for chemical and fuel resistance must plan reformulation, and qualification of new coatings in aerospace can take years.
Elastomer and Fiber Costs Are Volatile
Chloroprene, silicone and nylon prices move with energy and feedstock costs. Coaters told us raw materials are their largest cost item, so price spikes squeeze margins on long-term aerospace and defense contracts that reprice only once a year.
Competition From Thermoplastic Coatings
Polyurethane and PVC coated fabrics are lighter, weldable and cheaper for many covers, tarpaulins and inflatables. Rubber coatings keep an edge where flex life, heat or chemical resistance matters, but every new design review is a contest with thermoplastic alternatives.
Ownership Changes Create Short-Term Uncertainty
The ContiTech sale described in Continental's July 2026 ad hoc release still needs antitrust clearance, and buyers told us they are holding back some multi-year contract renewals until the new owner's plans for coated fabrics are clear. Integration of Cooley into Michelin brings similar questions for North American healthcare customers.
Growth Drivers
Aerospace Recovery and Fleet Renewal
Airbus delivered 793 aircraft in 2025, and both Airbus and Boeing carry multi-year backlogs that keep narrowbody output climbing. A single narrowbody carries several evacuation slides or slide rafts, each made from tens of square meters of high-tenacity nylon coated with neoprene, urethane or silicone, and the slides are refurbished or replaced on fixed cycles. Trelleborg's new Forest City plant, opened in May 2026, specifically targets aerospace customers, and its earlier SEK 300 million expansion plan for the Rutherfordton site listed aircraft escape slides as a core market. Collins Aerospace and Safran, the main slide makers, buy most of their fabric under long-term agreements. We estimate the aerospace cycle contributes about +0.9% of annual growth to the rubber coated fabrics market through 2035, and the aerospace and defense segment grows at 5.60% a year.
Higher Airbag Content and Vehicle Output in Asia
Silicone-coated nylon is the standard material for curtain and side airbag cushions, which must hold pressure for several seconds during a rollover. Cars sold in China, India and Southeast Asia are adding more airbags as safety ratings tighten, so airbag fabric demand rises faster than vehicle output. Kolon Industries, Hyosung Advanced Materials and Toray Industries are the leading airbag fabric suppliers, and all have capacity in Asia close to Autoliv, ZF and Joyson Safety Systems module plants. This driver adds roughly 0.8 percentage points to yearly market expansion and explains much of the 6.10% CAGR for silicone coatings.
Industrial Heat, Water and Healthcare Applications
Expansion joints and bellows in power plants, refineries and data center cooling systems need aramid or glass fabric coated with silicone or EPDM to survive heat and vibration. Water infrastructure projects use EPDM and neoprene coated fabrics for inflatable dams, pipe repair bladders and containment liners, markets that Cooley Group and Trelleborg both serve. Healthcare is the fastest growing end use at 5.90% a year, with coated fabrics used in support surfaces, cuffs and pressure-relief devices. Michelin's decision to buy Cooley, which had USD 168 million of 2025 revenue, shows how large groups value these steady, specification-driven uses. Taken together, industrial and healthcare demand lifts the market CAGR by close to +1.0% a year.
Opportunities
Battery Thermal Barriers for Electric Vehicles
Glass and aramid fabrics coated with silicone are being tested as thermal runaway barriers between battery cells and modules. Coaters told us several European and Chinese battery pack programs moved from sampling to pilot orders in 2025 and 2026, a niche that could add tens of millions of dollars of demand by 2030.
Fluorine-Free Chemical Protection
If PFAS restrictions remove fluoropolymer topcoats, buyers of chemical protective suits, fuel bladders and seals will need new coatings. Suppliers that qualify fluorine-free elastomer systems early, using specialty nitrile, EPDM or silicone blends, could win multi-year contracts in defense and oil and gas.
Asia Pacific Holds 44.20% and Adds the Most Value Through 2035 on Airbag and Industrial Production
Asia Pacific (APAC)
Asia Pacific (APAC) accounts for 44.20% of 2025 sales, worth USD 2,422.16 million, and expands at a 5.55% CAGR to USD 4,157.05 million by 2035. China, India, South Korea and Japan host most of the world's airbag fabric lines and a growing share of industrial hose, seal and diaphragm production. Kolon Industries and Hyosung Advanced Materials in South Korea and Toray Industries in Japan anchor APAC airbag fabric supply.
North America
North America holds 22.10% of 2025 value, or USD 1,211.08 million, and reaches USD 1,750.06 million by 2035 at a 3.75% CAGR. ECHA's August 2025 PFAS proposal makes Europe the first region where coaters must plan fluorine-free reformulation.
Latin America
Latin America accounts for 5.30% of 2025 value, about USD 290.44 million, and grows at a 4.40% CAGR to USD 446.75 million by 2035. Brazil and Mexico drive Latin American demand through vehicle airbag production, mining conveyors and oil and gas maintenance, with Mexico's car plants supplying the US market.
Middle East
The Middle East holds 3.40% of 2025 value, worth USD 186.32 million, and grows at 4.90% a year to USD 300.62 million by 2035. Refinery and petrochemical expansion in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar drives Middle East demand for coated fabric expansion joints, fire blankets and chemical protective clothing.
Africa
Africa represents 2.20% of 2025 value, around USD 120.56 million, and reaches USD 200.15 million by 2035 at a 5.20% CAGR. Mining in South Africa, Ghana and Zambia needs coated fabric curtains, ducting and protective gear, while African water projects use rubber coated containment liners.

Diversified Groups Are Absorbing Specialist Coaters While Airbag Fabric Stays in Asian Hands
The rubber coated fabrics market mixes a few large diversified groups with many regional specialists. Recent deals show the largest players buying scale in engineered fabrics, while airbag fabric remains a separate, concentrated niche.
Diversified Engineered Polymer Groups
Trelleborg AB runs one of the broadest coated fabrics portfolios, covering aircraft escape slide fabric, inflatable water infrastructure, healthcare and protective textiles, and opened its Forest City plant in May 2026. Continental's ContiTech unit, which reported 2024 sales of about EUR 4.5 billion excluding its original equipment unit, includes coated fabrics among many rubber products and is being sold to Lone Star Funds. Saint-Gobain supplies silicone and fluoropolymer coated fabrics for industrial and architectural uses.
Michelin's Engineered Fabrics Platform
Michelin has built a coated fabrics business outside tires through the EUR 700 million acquisition of Flex Composite Group, its ownership of Fenner Precision Polymers and the January 2026 purchase of Cooley Group. Fenner Precision Polymers offers rubber coated textiles through its Fabri Cote line, while Cooley supplies healthcare, waterproofing and containment fabrics from four North American plants.
Regional Specialists
Pennel & Flipo of France is known for its Orca neoprene and Hypalon-type coated fabrics used by inflatable boat builders worldwide.
