Resorcinol demand is shifting from tire cord dips toward flame retardants and UV absorbers, while trade remedies reshape Asian supply

Radial Insights sizes the global resorcinol market at USD 612.40 Million in 2025, rising to USD 635.98 Million in 2026 and USD 893.51 Million by 2035, a 3.85% CAGR. Volume growth is modest, but the mix of buyers is changing faster than the headline rate suggests.

Our scope covers merchant and captive sales of 1,3-dihydroxybenzene in technical, pharmaceutical and cosmetic grades, sold as flakes, powder or solution. We count value at the first point of sale by the producer. Downstream resorcinol-formaldehyde resins, resorcinol bis(diphenyl phosphate) and finished UV absorbers are excluded, so the market reflects the chemical itself rather than the formulations built on it.

Tire and mechanical rubber goods remain the anchor outlet, because the resorcinol-formaldehyde-latex (RFL) dip is still the standard way to bond polyester, nylon, rayon and aramid cords to rubber. That outlet grows at only 3.40% a year as Michelin ResiCare, Kordsa and Continental push RF-free systems into production. Flame retardants are the fastest application at 5.60%, followed by UV absorbers and plastic additives at 5.20%, both tied to electronics housings and engineering plastics.

Asia Pacific (APAC) holds 52.50% of 2025 value and grows fastest at 4.62% a year, helped by China's position as the largest producer and consumer and by India's push for domestic supply through Atul Ltd. Europe grows slowest at 2.40%, reflecting the endocrine-disruptor classification that places resorcinol on ECHA's Candidate List and encourages substitution.

Prices give a sense of the spread: Intratec put China resorcinol at USD 4,400 per tonne in January 2026, against USD 7,300 per tonne in South America, a gap of 66% that reflects freight, duties and the small number of qualified suppliers outside Asia.

Flame retardants grow fastest while rubber adhesives remain the largest outlet

Tire and rubber adhesives are still the biggest single use of resorcinol, but their 3.40% growth trails the market. Each passenger tire carries a few grams of RF resin in its cord dip, so demand follows tire output, which rose with the 3.9% increase in world vehicle production reported by OICA for 2025. The drag comes from RF-free dips. Flame retardants grow at 5.60% because resorcinol bis(diphenyl phosphate) is a halogen-free choice for PC/ABS housings in chargers, servers and EV electronics. UV absorbers grow at 5.20% as hydroxyphenyl-triazine grades built on resorcinol gain ground in automotive coatings and agricultural films. Wood adhesives, at 2.90%, track construction cycles for glulam and finger-jointed timber.

Pharmaceutical and cosmetic grade gains on tighter purity needs

Technical grade dominates volume and grows at 3.70%. Pharmaceutical and cosmetic grade, used in acne treatments, hair dyes and antiseptics, grows faster at 4.80%. Buyers pay a premium for low catechol and hydroquinone content, which favors producers with hydroperoxidation routes and strong quality systems in Japan, the US and India.

Powder outpaces flakes as compounders switch to automated dosing

Flakes remain the standard shipping form and grow at 3.60%. Powder grows at 4.20% because resin makers and pharmaceutical users want faster dissolution and easier dosing. Solutions grow at 3.30% and are favored by some tire cord dip houses that want to skip the dissolution step altogether.

Hydroperoxidation capacity replaces the older sulfonation route

The benzene sulfonation and alkali fusion route generates large volumes of sulfite waste, so its share shrinks at a 2.10% growth rate. The m-diisopropylbenzene hydroperoxidation route, which co-produces acetone, grows at 4.60%. New Chinese and Indian capacity favors the cleaner route, and environmental permits are harder to win for sulfonation plants.

Electronics and plastics end use gains most from the shift in mix

Tire and mechanical rubber goods grow at 3.45%, construction and wood products at 2.95%, and healthcare and personal care at 4.70%. Electrical, electronics and plastics leads at 5.40%, combining flame retardant and UV absorber demand. The gap of about two percentage points between this end use and the tire outlet is the single biggest change in the resorcinol market's demand profile over the decade.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Tire makers are scaling RF-free cord adhesives

In July 2025, Michelin told the European Rubber Journal that more than 100 million tires had been made with its ResiCare resin, a drop-in replacement for the resorcinol-formaldehyde part of the RFL dip, produced at eight industrial sites in Europe and Asia and validated by five major converters. Michelin put the extra cost at about 4 cents per tire. In March 2025, Kordsa and Continental jointly presented their formaldehyde-free Cokoon bonding technology at Tire Technology Expo in Hannover. Together these programs cap growth in the largest resorcinol outlet.

Trade remedies are redrawing Asian supply routes

In March 2025, China's Ministry of Commerce extended its 40.5% anti-dumping duty on resorcinol from Japan for five more years. India's Directorate General of Trade Remedies issued final findings in September 2025 recommending duties on Chinese and Japanese material, and in June 2026 opened a new investigation at the request of Atul Ltd. Buyers in both countries are lengthening contracts and qualifying second sources.

Prices have eased in Asia

China resorcinol was quoted at USD 4,400 per tonne in January 2026, 2.7% below the USD 4,520 level a year earlier, while South America sat at USD 7,300 per tonne, down 9% year on year. Softer Asian prices widen the margin gap between integrated hydroperoxidation producers and older plants.

Halogen-free flame retardants pull resorcinol into electronics

Resorcinol bis(diphenyl phosphate) suppliers such as ICL Group sell into PC/ABS blends for chargers, data center hardware and EV electronics. Growth in China's new-energy vehicle output, which OICA put at 16.626 million units in 2025, up 29%, supports this use through battery housings and power electronics.

Restraints and Challenges

Endocrine-disruptor status pushes substitution in Europe

The European Commission voted in January 2022 to identify resorcinol as a substance of very high concern because of its endocrine-disrupting properties, which places it on ECHA's Candidate List. Article suppliers must notify customers when concentrations exceed 0.1%, and several European tire and belt makers now score RF-free dips as a sustainability gain. This is the main reason Europe grows at only 2.40% a year.

Concentrated supply leaves buyers exposed

Only a handful of producers serve the merchant market: Sumitomo Chemical in Japan, INDSPEC Chemical Corporation in Pennsylvania, Atul Ltd as India's sole producer, and a group of Chinese plants including Zhejiang Hongsheng Chemical. One outage can tighten a whole region, and buyers outside Asia paid USD 7,300 per tonne in South America in January 2026, well above Asian levels.

Trade cases add cost and uncertainty

India's 2025 findings reported dumping margins of 25% to 35% for Zhejiang Hongsheng and 30% to 40% for Sumitomo, and the Directorate General of Trade Remedies opened a fresh case in June 2026. China already applies 40.5% to Japanese supply. Resin makers that sell across borders face shifting landed costs that are hard to pass on to tire customers on annual contracts.

Formaldehyde rules hit the main co-reactant

Formaldehyde has been classified as a Category 1B carcinogen in the EU since 2016, and Michelin notes that RF-free systems avoided about 30 tons of formaldehyde across 100 million tires. Every tightening of formaldehyde exposure limits raises the case for dips that use neither chemical, which slows resorcinol demand in rubber goods.

Growth Drivers

Vehicle and tire output keeps the rubber adhesive base growing

OICA reported world vehicle production of 96.4 million units in 2025, up 3.9% from 92.7 million in 2024, with Asia Pacific rising 7.6% to about 59.2 million units and China alone producing 34.53 million. Every radial passenger and truck tire made with polyester, nylon or rayon carcass plies needs an adhesive dip, and most plants still run RFL lines built around resorcinol. Kordsa and Continental continue to qualify RF-free systems, but replacing dip chemistry across hundreds of tire sizes takes years of validation. For the 2025-2035 period we expect steady tire volume in Asia, Africa and Latin America to add about +1.1% of annual growth to the resorcinol market, even after allowing for substitution in Europe and among Michelin's own plants.

Halogen-free flame retardants for electronics and EVs

Resorcinol bis(diphenyl phosphate), produced by suppliers including ICL Group, is one of the main phosphorus flame retardants for PC/ABS and modified PPO used in laptop chargers, server enclosures, battery management housings and charging hardware. China's new-energy vehicle production reached 16.626 million units in 2025, up 29%, according to OICA, and each vehicle carries several kilograms of flame-retarded engineering plastic in power electronics and battery packs. Rules that restrict brominated additives in electronics push compounders toward phosphate esters. We estimate this driver contributes roughly 0.9 percentage points to the market's yearly expansion, making flame retardants the fastest application at 5.60%.

Domestic capacity drives in India and China

India's Directorate General of Trade Remedies issued final findings in September 2025 recommending duties on Chinese and Japanese resorcinol and opened another investigation in June 2026 on a petition from Atul Ltd, the country's only producer. Atul's consolidated revenue grew from INR 5,583 crore in 2024-25 to INR 6,274 crore in 2025-26, giving it the balance sheet to defend and expand domestic supply. China's 40.5% duty on Japanese material, extended in March 2025, keeps local plants such as Zhejiang Hongsheng Chemical well loaded. Local supply shortens lead times for Indian and Chinese tire, wood adhesive and pharmaceutical users, which lifts consumption in the fastest-growing region by an estimated half a point of CAGR.

Opportunities

UV absorbers for coatings and agricultural films

Hydroxyphenyl-triazine UV absorbers built on resorcinol, sold by BASF and others, protect automotive clearcoats and greenhouse films. Growth at 5.20% a year makes this the second-best application, and pharmaceutical-grade purity techniques transfer well to these high-value intermediates.

Bio-based and RF-free partnerships

Michelin plans a bio-based version of its Resi4TEX resin by 2027. Resorcinol producers that co-develop low-formaldehyde resins with dip houses can keep a share of the adhesive value pool rather than lose it outright, especially in Asia where RFL lines will run for years.

Asia Pacific (APAC) controls more than half of resorcinol demand and sets the global price

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) holds a 52.50% share of the resorcinol market, worth USD 321.51 Million in 2025 and USD 505.06 Million by 2035 at a 4.62% CAGR. China is the largest producer and consumer, Japan hosts Sumitomo Chemical's hydroperoxidation capacity, and India's Atul Ltd is expanding behind trade protection. China quoted resorcinol at USD 4,400 per tonne in January 2026, the global low.

North America

North America accounts for 17.50% of 2025 value, or USD 107.17 Million, and reaches USD 141.94 Million by 2035 at a 2.85% CAGR. INDSPEC Chemical Corporation's Petrolia, Pennsylvania plant supplies most regional tire cord, wood adhesive and RDP demand. US resorcinol prices were down 0.6% year on year in January 2026, according to Intratec.

Europe

Europe takes a 20.00% share, worth USD 122.48 Million in 2025 and USD 155.26 Million in 2035, growing at 2.40% a year. Europe imports most of its resorcinol and its prices fell about 5% year on year by January 2026. The endocrine-disruptor listing, Michelin ResiCare's eight production sites and Continental's Cokoon program make Europe the region where RF-free dips spread fastest.

Latin America

Latin America represents 5.00% of the market, USD 30.62 Million in 2025, and grows at 3.70% to USD 44.03 Million by 2035. Brazil's tire and plywood industries are the main users. South American prices of USD 7,300 per tonne in January 2026 were 66% above China, reflecting import dependence.

Middle East

The Middle East holds a 3.00% share, worth USD 18.37 Million in 2025 and USD 27.46 Million by 2035 at a 4.10% CAGR. Planned tire capacity in Saudi Arabia and growing replacement tire demand across the Gulf support RFL use, while construction drives wood adhesive use.

Africa

Africa accounts for 2.00% of 2025 value, USD 12.25 Million, and expands at 4.60% to USD 19.20 Million by 2035. OICA reported that African vehicle sales rose 22% in 2025 to 1.29 million units, supporting replacement tire and rubber goods demand from a small base.

Four producer groups supply the merchant resorcinol market, while tire and cord companies shape demand

The resorcinol market is one of the most concentrated in the rubber chemicals chain. A small group of plants sells most merchant volume, and capacity additions are rare because the hydroperoxidation route needs integration with benzene, propylene and acetone streams. Competitive advantage rests on route economics, purity, trade protection and long relationships with tire cord dip houses.

Japanese and US incumbents

Sumitomo Chemical is the reference producer for high-purity resorcinol and has long supplied tire cord, UV absorber and pharmaceutical customers worldwide. Its exports face a 40.5% duty in China, extended in March 2025, and margins of 30% to 40% were reported in India's 2025 findings, so the company leans on non-Asian customers and specialty grades. INDSPEC Chemical Corporation operates the main North American plant in Petrolia, Pennsylvania, and is the default supplier for US resin makers and wood adhesive formulators such as Hexion.

Asian challengers behind trade walls

Atul Ltd is India's only resorcinol producer and has used trade remedies twice in two years to defend its position. Its revenue reached INR 6,274 crore in 2025-26, giving room for debottlenecking. Zhejiang Hongsheng Chemical is one of China's larger producers and cooperated in India's 2024 investigation, with reported margins of 25% to 35%. Chinese plants set the global floor price, with China quoting USD 4,400 per tonne in January 2026.

Resin, additive and flame retardant converters

SI Group makes resorcinol-based bonding and tackifying resins for tire compounds. ICL Group supplies resorcinol bis(diphenyl phosphate) flame retardants to engineering plastic compounders. BASF sells hydroxyphenyl-triazine UV absorbers for coatings and plastics. These converters decide how fast resorcinol volume moves away from rubber and into specialty additives.

Tire and cord companies driving RF-free change

Michelin, through ResiCare, has moved more than 100 million tires onto an RF-free adhesive and offers the technology to rivals. Continental and Kordsa jointly promote Cokoon. Teijin Frontier has developed a non-RF adhesive for rubber-reinforcing fibers. These programs do not remove resorcinol demand quickly, but they set the ceiling on tire adhesive growth at about 3.40% a year.
