Green Tires and Rice Husk Feedstock Drive Precipitated Silica Toward USD 6.97 Billion
Radial Insights sizes the global precipitated silica market at USD 4.12 Billion in 2025, with revenue reaching USD 4.34 Billion in 2026 and USD 6.97 Billion by 2035, a 5.40% CAGR. Tire tread compounds account for the largest share of that revenue and most of the growth.
Precipitated silica is amorphous silicon dioxide made by reacting sodium silicate with sulfuric acid, then filtering, washing and drying the product. Producers tune surface area, pore structure and particle form for each use. This report covers all precipitated grades, including highly dispersible silica (HDS) for tires, conventional grades for industrial rubber and footwear, and specialty grades for toothpaste, food and feed carriers, battery separators, coatings and agrochemicals. It excludes fumed silica, silica gel, colloidal silica and crystalline quartz.
Rubber and tires remain the core outlet. Silica-filled treads cut rolling resistance and improve wet grip compared with carbon black, which is why EU tire labelling and new tire abrasion limits favor silica-rich compounds. USTMA expects US tire shipments of 337.4 million units in 2025, and Europe's consumer replacement market rose 3% to 58.7 million units in the first quarter of 2025, according to ETRMA.
Bio-circular and rice husk silica is the fastest-growing grade at 8.90% CAGR, from a small base. Solvay opened Europe's first bio-circular silica unit in Livorno, Italy, in January 2026, and Quechen Silicon Chemical is building a 100 ktpa rice husk silica plant in Jiangsu. Africa is the fastest-growing region at 6.25%, while Asia Pacific holds 52.40% of 2025 revenue.
Capacity is shifting east. Evonik is closing its Havre de Grace precipitated silica plant in the US in mid-2026, while Tata Chemicals, Aksharchem and Jin Sanjiang add lines in India and Malaysia. This geographic shift and the move to circular feedstock shape the precipitated silica market through 2035.

Market Dynamics
Market Trends
Rice Husk and Waste Sand Replace Virgin Sand
Producers are moving to circular raw materials. Continental said in July 2025 that it is using more rice husk ash silica across its tire range, with Solvay among its suppliers. Solvay said in September 2025 that its Qingdao and Gunsan HDS plants will switch to ISCC+ certified waste sand from 2026, and in January 2026 it opened a Livorno unit making HDS from rice husk ash sodium silicate with 35% lower CO2 per tonne.
Chinese Producers Build Large Rice Husk Plants
Quechen Silicon Chemical filed plans in July 2025 for a 100 ktpa rice husk silica plant at Binhai, Jiangsu, in two 50 ktpa phases at a cost of CNY 700 million and with a 24-month build. Jin Sanjiang (Zhaoqing) Silicon Materials, which already runs 86 ktpa at Zhaoqing, filed in August 2025 for a Malaysian tire silica plant worth up to CNY 600 million.
Capacity Moves From the US to India and Southeast Asia
Evonik said in January 2025 that it will close its Havre de Grace precipitated silica plant in Maryland in mid-2026, shifting output to other sites in its network of 26 silica plants. India is moving the other way: Aksharchem raised Dahej capacity to 18,000 tpa in June 2025, and Tata Chemicals filed in November 2025 to add 50 ktpa at Cuddalore.
Tire Abrasion Rules Arrive
In June 2026 UNECE WP.29 adopted the first binding tire abrasion limits for passenger car and van tires, applying from 30 June 2028 and tightening in 2033. Lower wear with good wet grip favors well-dispersed silica treads, so the rule adds a second regulatory reason to raise silica loading after rolling resistance labels.
Restraints and Challenges
Energy-Intensive Drying and Rising Cost in Europe
Precipitated silica needs large amounts of heat for drying, and sodium silicate furnaces run at high temperature. Evonik's group sales fell 7% to EUR 14.1 billion in 2025, reflecting weak demand and high costs in European chemicals. High gas prices in Europe make new capacity there hard to justify.
Plant Closures and Supply Gaps
Evonik's January 2025 announcement to close Havre de Grace removes a US precipitated silica site in mid-2026. US tire and battery separator customers must qualify material from other plants, which can take 6 to 18 months for tire grades.
Cost Premium for Circular Silica
Rice husk ash and certified waste sand need new logistics and certification. Solvay's Livorno unit shows the technology works, but circular grades still cost more than standard HDS, and only premium tire lines currently pay the difference.
Chinese Overcapacity in Standard Grades
Chinese producers such as Quechen, Jin Sanjiang, Zhuzhou Xinglong and Fujian Sanming Zhengyuan are adding capacity faster than domestic demand grows. Exports of conventional grades put pressure on prices in Southeast Asia, India and Latin America, which limits margins for smaller regional producers.
Growth Drivers
Low Rolling Resistance and Wet Grip Requirements
Tire labels in the EU, Japan, Korea and China grade tires on rolling resistance and wet grip, and both improve when silica replaces part of the carbon black in the tread. Tire volume remains high: USTMA projects 337.4 million US tire shipments in 2025, with light truck replacement up 2.9% and truck replacement up 7.9%. Europe's consumer replacement sales rose 3% to 58.7 million units in the first quarter of 2025, with all-season tires up 14%, and all-season treads use high silica loadings. Electric vehicles need even lower rolling resistance to protect range, which lifts silica content per tire. Radial Insights estimates this driver adds about +1.7% to annual growth in the precipitated silica market through 2035.
Circular Content Targets at Tire Makers
Continental reported about 26% renewable and recycled materials in its tires in 2024 and targets more than 40% by 2030, a level the wider tire industry also aims for. Silica from rice husk ash counts toward those targets, and Solvay plans to move all its silica sites to ISCC PLUS raw materials. Quechen's 100 ktpa rice husk plant, budgeted at CNY 700 million, shows how producers are investing to meet this demand. Because circular grades sell at a premium and replace virgin grades, they add value faster than volume. We estimate circular content targets contribute roughly +0.9 points of the 5.40% CAGR, a share that rises after 2028 as new plants start up.
Indian and Southeast Asian Tire Expansion
India's tire exports reached a record in fiscal 2026, and Indian silica makers are expanding to supply both domestic and export tire lines. Tata Chemicals plans 50 ktpa at Cuddalore for INR 7.75 billion with a 27-month build and about 50 ktpa more at Mithapur. Aksharchem raised its Dahej plant to 18,000 tpa in June 2025. Jin Sanjiang's planned Malaysian plant targets tire makers in Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam, where Chinese and Korean tire groups have built export capacity for the US and Europe. Local silica supply cuts freight and qualification time for these plants. Regional expansion lifts the market's yearly growth by close to +0.8%, mostly in Asia Pacific.
Opportunities
Tire Abrasion Limits From 2028
The UNECE WP.29 abrasion limits that apply from June 2028 will push tire makers to rework tread compounds for wear as well as grip and rolling resistance. Producers that offer HDS grades with better dispersion and silane compatibility can win new compound approvals during 2026 and 2027 testing cycles.
Battery Separators for Start-Stop and Storage
Silica-filled polyethylene separators are used in lead-acid batteries for start-stop vehicles, forklifts and backup power. Battery separators grow at 6.30% in our forecast, and the loss of US capacity at Havre de Grace leaves room for suppliers such as Qemetica, the former PPG silica business, to win share with dedicated separator grades.
Asia Pacific Holds More Than Half of Precipitated Silica Revenue, Africa Grows Fastest
Asia Pacific (APAC)
Asia Pacific (APAC) accounted for a 52.40% share of the precipitated silica market in 2025, worth USD 2,158.88 Million. APAC revenue is forecast to reach USD 3,921.29 Million by 2035 at a 6.15% CAGR. Quechen's 100 ktpa rice husk project, Tata Chemicals' 50 ktpa Cuddalore line and Jin Sanjiang's 86 ktpa Zhaoqing site anchor supply close to Asia's tire clusters.
North America
North America held a 14.80% share in 2025, worth USD 609.76 Million, and is forecast to reach USD 924.53 Million by 2035 at a 4.25% CAGR. US tire shipments of 337.4 million units in 2025 support demand, while Evonik's mid-2026 closure of Havre de Grace tightens North American supply.
Europe
Europe took a 20.10% share in 2025, worth USD 828.12 Million, rising to USD 1,219.94 Million by 2035 at a 3.95% CAGR. European consumer tire replacement grew 3% in the first quarter of 2025, and Solvay's Livorno bio-circular unit, opened in January 2026, gives Europe a lead in low-carbon silica.
Latin America
Latin America held a 6.30% share in 2025, worth USD 259.56 Million, and should reach USD 428.87 Million by 2035 at a 5.15% CAGR. Brazilian and Mexican tire plants owned by global groups buy HDS, and Latin American rice producers in Brazil could become a source of rice husk ash.
Middle East
The Middle East accounted for a 3.60% share in 2025, worth USD 148.32 Million, and is forecast to reach USD 259.42 Million by 2035 at a 5.75% CAGR. New tire plants in Saudi Arabia and Turkey and growing oral care production in the Gulf drive Middle East demand.
Africa
Africa held a 2.80% share in 2025, worth USD 115.36 Million, and is the fastest-growing region with a 6.25% CAGR to USD 211.52 Million by 2035. African demand comes from toothpaste, feed and new tire plants in Morocco, Egypt and South Africa.

Two Western Leaders Face Fast-Growing Chinese and Indian Producers
The precipitated silica market combines a few global suppliers of tire-grade HDS with many regional producers of conventional and specialty grades. Tire-grade silica needs long qualification with each tire maker, so the global leaders keep a strong position in premium treads, while price competition is sharp in standard grades. We group producers into four sets.
Global HDS Leaders
Evonik Industries sells ULTRASIL tire silica and specialty grades from a network of 26 silica plants worldwide and credited higher silica demand for earnings growth in its Smart Materials division for 2024. Solvay, which kept the Zeosil business after its 2023 split, leads in circular silica with its Livorno rice husk unit and the conversion of Qingdao and Gunsan to certified waste sand.
Specialty and Separator Specialists
Qemetica, which acquired PPG's silica business in 2024, focuses on tire, battery separator and coatings grades in North America and Europe. Tosoh Silica and Tokuyama in Japan supply Nipsil and other grades to Japanese tire, rubber and personal care customers. W. R. Grace is active mainly in silica gels and specialty silicas for coatings and consumer uses.
Chinese Volume Producers
Quechen Silicon Chemical is the largest Chinese supplier and is building a 100 ktpa rice husk plant. Jin Sanjiang (Zhaoqing) Silicon Materials runs 86 ktpa and plans a Malaysian site. Zhuzhou Xinglong New Material, Fujian Sanming Zhengyuan Chemical and Anten Chemical serve Chinese tire and industrial rubber buyers and export conventional grades across Asia.
Indian Expanders
Tata Chemicals is planning about 100 ktpa of new capacity across Cuddalore and Mithapur. Oriental Silicas and Madhu Silica supply tire, footwear and oral care customers in India and export markets, and Aksharchem lifted Dahej capacity to 18,000 tpa. Indian producers benefit from nearby tire expansion and low-cost rice husk supply, and we expect them to gain share in Asia and the Middle East through 2035.
