Brake Pads and PVC Compounds Lift Nitrile Butadiene Rubber Powder to a 5.35% CAGR
Sales of nitrile butadiene rubber powder reached USD 318.60 Million in 2025 and should climb to USD 335.65 Million in 2026 and USD 536.53 Million by 2035, a 5.35% CAGR, according to Radial Insights. Friction materials and PVC modification account for most of that gain.
Nitrile butadiene rubber powder, also called powdered NBR or P-NBR, is acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer ground or spray-dried into free-flowing particles, usually dusted with calcium carbonate or silica to stop caking. The powder form lets compounders dry-blend the rubber into PVC, phenolic resins and adhesive systems without the masticating step that bales need. This study covers pre-crosslinked, linear and carboxylated NBR powders sold to compounders and converters. It excludes NBR bales, NBR latex and hydrogenated NBR, which Radial Insights covers in separate reports.
Friction materials are the fastest-growing application at 6.40% CAGR. The US Copper-Free Brake Initiative cut allowable copper in brake pads to below 0.5% by weight from January 2025, and Euro 7 brings the first brake particle limits of 7 mg/km for new car types from November 2026. Both rules push formulators toward organic binders and elastomer modifiers, where NBR powder improves noise damping and wear.
Asia Pacific is both the largest region, with a 49.80% share, and the fastest-growing one at 6.05% CAGR. OICA data show 96.4 million vehicles were built worldwide in 2025, up 3.9%, with Asia Pacific making about 59.2 million of them. China's industry standard HG/T 4849-2016 sets the specification for powdered NBR, which helps Chinese brake and PVC compounders buy the material on common terms.
Supply comes from a short list of producers with powder lines, led by Zeon, ARLANXEO and Synthomer, backed by a wider group of NBR base-polymer makers in Korea, China and Taiwan. That makes the nitrile butadiene rubber powder market a small but technically demanding niche inside the wider nitrile rubber chain.

Crosslinked and Carboxylated Powders Outpace Linear Grades
Pre-crosslinked powders grow at 5.80% because they hold their shape in hot PVC and phenolic processing, which keeps surface finish and low compression set. Carboxylated NBR powder, such as Zeon's DuoMod DP5045, grows fastest at 6.20% on its stronger bond to fillers and fibers in brake linings. Linear powders grow at 4.70% and remain the low-cost choice for general PVC blends.
Higher Acrylonitrile Content Gains With Oil and Fuel Resistance Needs
High-acrylonitrile grades above 34% grow at 5.90% because seals, hoses and brake pads face hotter oils and new fluids. Medium grades of 28% to 34% grow at 5.30% and serve most PVC work, while low-acrylonitrile grades below 28% grow at 4.60% for flexible, low-temperature products.
Friction Materials Lead Applications on Regulation

Market Dynamics
Market Trends
Nitrile Capacity Moves Closer to Asian Compounders
ARLANXEO and TSRC opened their relocated NBR joint-venture plant in Nantong, Jiangsu, in May 2025, raising capacity from 30 kt to 40 kt a year and adding Perbunan grades there for the first time. In February 2026 ARLANXEO opened a 5,000 tonne Therban HNBR plant in Changzhou. More base polymer in China shortens supply chains for powder makers serving Chinese brake and PVC plants.
Chinese Producers Localize Specialty NBR
PetroChina Lanzhou Petrochemical produced a record 125,000 tonnes of synthetic rubber in the first half of 2026, up 17.27%, and said it is exporting high-end NBR to the Netherlands and Poland. In August 2026 Mysteel reported a new 2,000 tonne a year specialty NBR unit at Lanhua Xiangxin using CNPC technology. These steps give Chinese powder grinders a domestic feedstock for specialty grades.
A New US NBR Source Emerges
Lion Elastomers said in February 2026 that it plans to start NBR production at Port Neches, Texas, targeting commercial output in September 2026. It named hose, gaskets, seals and PVC modification as target markets. A second US source would reduce North American dependence on Asian and European NBR.
Lower Acrylonitrile Prices Ease Margins
Acrylonitrile CFR Far East Asia fell from about USD 1.267 per kg in early January 2025 to about USD 1.05 in the week ending 18 February 2026, according to ALCHEMPro. Kumho Petrochemical reported a synthetic rubber margin of 19.2% in Q2 2026, against 1.3% a year earlier, showing how quickly feedstock relief can reach NBR producers.
Restraints and Challenges
Weak Demand in Gloves and Latex Spills Over
Synthomer reported 2025 revenue of GBP 1,739.2 million, down 10%, with Health and Protection volumes down 17.3%. Overcapacity in the nitrile glove chain pushes some NBR producers to sell more into powder and dry rubber markets at lower prices, which squeezes margins for powder specialists.
Competing Modifiers in PVC
In PVC, NBR powder competes with chlorinated polyethylene, thermoplastic polyurethane and acrylic impact modifiers. When PVC demand in construction slows, compounders switch to the cheapest modifier that meets the specification, which caps growth in PVC modification at 4.90%.
Flat Vehicle Output in Europe and the Americas
OICA data show European vehicle production fell 0.8% to 17.2 million units in 2025, and output in the Americas fell 2.1% to 18.74 million units, as reported in the OICA 2025 production release. Lower OEM volumes slow brake pad and seal demand in those regions.
Qualification Cost for Brake Formulas
Brake pad makers must re-test formulas under the EPA Copper-Free Brake Initiative and, in Europe, under Euro 7 particle tests. Each change in elastomer supplier can trigger new dynamometer and noise testing, so customers switch suppliers slowly and new powder grades take two years or more to win business.
Growth Drivers
Copper-Free and Low-Dust Brake Rules
Since January 2025, brake pads sold in the US must contain less than 0.5% copper by weight under the N-level stage of the Copper-Free Brake Initiative run by the EPA, state regulators and the brake industry, down from 5% in 2021. In the EU, Regulation (EU) 2024/1257, known as Euro 7, sets brake PM10 limits of 7 mg/km for most cars and 3 mg/km for pure electric cars, applying to new types from 29 November 2026 and to all new cars from 29 November 2027. Removing copper and cutting dust both mean more organic binder and elastomer in the pad, and NBR powder blends easily with phenolic resin to improve noise damping, wear and fade. Radial Insights estimates brake regulation adds about +1.4% to annual growth in the nitrile butadiene rubber powder market through 2035.
Growing Vehicle Output in Asia
OICA counted 96.4 million vehicles built in 2025, up 3.9% from 92.7 million in 2024. China built 34.53 million, including 16.63 million new energy vehicles, while India built 6.49 million and Japan 8.41 million. Every vehicle carries brake pads and shoes, fuel and oil hoses, gaskets and seals that may use NBR powder or NBR-modified PVC. Asia Pacific output rose about 7.6% in 2025, and Asian brake and seal makers account for most new powder demand. Heavier electric vehicles also wear seals and gaskets differently and use regenerative braking, but they still need pads that pass corrosion and noise tests. This driver supports roughly +1.0 point of the 5.35% CAGR.
Oil-Resistant PVC Compounds in Cable, Hose and Construction
NBR powder makes flexible PVC permanently plasticized, oil resistant and less prone to plasticizer migration. Cable jackets, oil-resistant hoses, gaskets for appliances and window profiles all use this effect. Lion Elastomers named PVC modification as a target market for its new Port Neches NBR line in February 2026, and ARLANXEO markets Baymod N specifically for PVC, gaskets and brake linings. India and Southeast Asia are adding PVC compounding capacity for power and data cable projects, which raises demand for medium-acrylonitrile powders. We estimate PVC and construction uses add close to +0.8% a year to market growth, a smaller lift than brakes but steadier across economic cycles.
Opportunities
Carboxylated Powders for Electric Vehicle Brakes
Regenerative braking means friction brakes on electric vehicles are used less often and are more prone to corrosion and noise. Carboxylated NBR powders, growing at 6.20%, bond strongly to fibers and fillers and can help formulators meet the stricter 3 mg/km Euro 7 limit for pure electric cars. Suppliers that co-develop formulas with pad makers can lock in multi-year business.
Local Powder Lines Next to New NBR Plants
New NBR capacity in Nantong, Lanzhou and Port Neches creates room for powder grinding and spray-drying lines close to the base polymer. A local powder line can cut freight and packaging cost and serve brake makers in China, India and Mexico that now import powder from Japan, Europe or India.
Asia Pacific Holds Nearly Half of NBR Powder Revenue and Grows Fastest
Asia Pacific (APAC)
Asia Pacific (APAC) took a 49.80% share of the nitrile butadiene rubber powder market in 2025, worth USD 158.66 Million. APAC revenue is forecast to reach USD 285.48 Million by 2035 at a 6.05% CAGR, the fastest of any region. Asia Pacific built about 59.2 million vehicles in 2025, up 7.6%, and China's HG/T 4849-2016 standard sets a common specification for local powder buyers.
North America
North America held a 16.20% share in 2025, worth USD 51.61 Million, and should reach USD 79.01 Million by 2035 at a 4.35% CAGR. The US built 10.24 million vehicles in 2025, and North American brake pads have been held to below 0.5% copper since January 2025. European vehicle output slipped 0.8% to 17.2 million units in 2025. Euro 7 brake particle limits, applying to new types from November 2026, keep European friction formulators active in testing new NBR powder blends.
Latin America
Latin America held a 7.10% share in 2025, worth USD 22.62 Million, and is projected to reach USD 37.73 Million by 2035 at a 5.25% CAGR. Brazil's Nitriflex supplies NBR powder for PVC modification, and Latin American brake makers in Brazil and Mexico export to US aftermarket buyers who need copper-free pads.
Middle East
The Middle East took a 4.30% share in 2025, worth USD 13.70 Million, rising to USD 23.51 Million by 2035 at a 5.55% CAGR. Middle East PVC compounders in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Turkey use NBR powder in cable and hose compounds for oil and gas projects.
Africa
Africa held a 3.20% share in 2025, worth USD 10.20 Million, and should reach USD 18.17 Million by 2035 at a 5.95% CAGR. African demand comes mostly from PVC cable and footwear compounders in South Africa, Egypt and Morocco, plus replacement brake pad production in North Africa.

Three Specialist Powder Makers Set Prices for a Wider NBR Supply Base
The nitrile butadiene rubber powder market has two layers. A handful of companies run grinding, partitioning and spray-drying lines that turn NBR into stable powder, and a larger group of NBR producers supplies base polymer, sometimes selling powder through partners. Brake and PVC customers qualify specific grades, so a supplier's technical service matters as much as its price.
Specialist Powder Leaders
Zeon Corporation sells Nipol NBR in powder form and the DuoMod DP5045 pre-crosslinked carboxylated NBR powder, which is widely used in friction and PVC applications. ARLANXEO markets Baymod N, a free-flowing NBR powder for PVC, gaskets, friction linings and shoe soles, backed by its Krynac and Perbunan base polymers. Synthomer, which took over the former Eliokem and Omnova lines, sells Chemigum P powders such as P7D, P86F and P83 for thermoplastic modification and brake pads.
Regional Powder Producers
Apcotex Industries in India makes Apcoflex PNBR in linear and pre-crosslinked grades for brakes, gaskets and PVC, and has built a strong export business to Asia and the Middle East. Nitriflex in Brazil supplies NBR powder for PVC modification across Latin America. These producers compete on delivery time and flexible lot sizes for mid-sized compounders.
Base-Polymer Suppliers
Kumho Petrochemical and LG Chem in Korea, TSRC in Taiwan, Nantex Industry, SIBUR, Versalis and PetroChina Lanzhou Petrochemical produce NBR bales and latex that feed the wider chain. Lanzhou's record output in the first half of 2026 and Kumho's higher margins show that base-polymer supply is healthy, which keeps powder feedstock costs in check.
New Entrants and Capacity Shifts
Lion Elastomers' planned NBR line at Port Neches would be the newest US source, and Chinese specialty NBR units such as Lanhua Xiangxin could give domestic grinders more grade choice. We expect at least one new powder line in China or India by 2028, which would sharpen price competition in linear grades while specialty carboxylated powders keep a premium.
