New Plants in the Americas and Trade Duties in India Are Redrawing NBR Supply
Solid nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) generated USD 2.74 Billion in global sales in 2025, and Radial Insights forecasts USD 2.86 Billion in 2026 and USD 4.17 Billion by 2035, a 4.30% CAGR. NBR is the standard oil- and fuel-resistant rubber for seals, O-rings, gaskets and hoses, so its demand moves with vehicle output, industrial machinery and oil and gas activity.
This nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) market study covers solid bale NBR, carboxylated NBR (XNBR), powder and crumb NBR and NBR/PVC blends, valued at producer selling prices. NBR latex used for medical and industrial gloves and hydrogenated NBR (HNBR) are adjacent markets and are excluded. Radial Insights estimates 2025 volume at roughly 1.1 million tonnes.
Feedstock drives price. Butadiene makes up about 60% to 65% of NBR production cost and acrylonitrile 20% to 25%. Chinese NBR prices slid about 6.3% through 2025 to a low near RMB 15,525 per tonne, then jumped to RMB 22,600 to 23,200 by April 2026 after Middle East conflict pushed butadiene to multi-year highs. Our 2026 value reflects that price spike, and we assume prices ease from 2027.
Carboxylated NBR is the fastest-growing grade type at a 5.40% CAGR, used where seals and rollers must resist abrasion. Asia Pacific (APAC) is the fastest region at a 4.78% CAGR, supported by China's 2025 vehicle output of 34.53 million units, about 36% of the world total.
Supply is shifting. Lion Elastomers is adding NBR in Texas, Dynasol is expanding in Mexico, and India's trade authority has recommended anti-dumping duties on NBR imports from China, the EU, Korea and Russia. Electric vehicles, which need fewer fuel hoses, temper long-term automotive demand.

Medium Acrylonitrile Grades Lead While High-ACN Grades Grow Fastest
Medium ACN NBR, with 25% to 35% acrylonitrile, balances oil resistance and low-temperature flexibility and dominates seals and hoses; it grows at 4.20%. High ACN grades grow at 5.10% because biofuel blends and aggressive lubricants need more oil resistance. Low ACN grades, used where cold flexibility matters, grow at 3.60%. India's anti-dumping case targets the 25% to 42% ACN range, showing where trade volume is concentrated.
Powder NBR Gains in PVC Modification and Friction Materials
Bale and solid NBR makes up most volume and grows at 4.10%. Powder and crumb NBR grows at 5.20%, used to modify PVC and in brake friction compounds where easy dry blending matters. NBR/PVC blends, sold by Versalis under Europrene N among others, grow at 4.40% in cable jackets and hoses that need weather and ozone resistance.
Carboxylated NBR Outpaces Standard Grades
Standard NBR grows at 4.00% and remains the price benchmark, with Lanzhou Petrochemical's 3305E setting Chinese reference prices. Carboxylated NBR grows at 5.40% because the added carboxyl groups improve abrasion and tear resistance in rollers, seals and oilfield parts. Specialty and low-fouling grades, which reduce mold cleaning in automated seal molding, grow at 5.00%.
Seals Grow Faster Than Hoses as Electric Vehicles Cut Fuel Lines
Seals, O-rings and gaskets form the largest application and grow at 4.70%, because hydraulic, gearbox and thermal management systems in both combustion and electric vehicles still need oil-resistant seals. Hoses grow at only 3.70%: electric vehicles have no fuel lines and fewer oil hoses. Belts, rollers and molded goods grow at 4.10%. Footwear and foam grow at 4.90% with demand for oil-resistant work boot soles and insulation foam in Asia. Cables and others grow at 4.20%.
Oil and Gas Is the Fastest End Use Despite Automotive's Larger Base
Automotive and transportation is the largest end use, at roughly 70% of Chinese NBR demand together with industrial seals and hoses, and grows at 4.10%. Oil and gas grows at 4.80% on drilling and pipeline seal demand. Industrial machinery grows at 4.50%, construction at 3.90% and consumer goods at 4.60%.

Market Dynamics
Market Trends
NBR Capacity Is Being Built Closer to North American Buyers
Lion Elastomers said in February 2026 that it will add NBR production at Port Neches, Texas, targeting commercial output in September 2026, noting that NBR used in the US is mostly imported. Dynasol announced in March 2026 an expansion of about 11 million pounds of NBR at Altamira, Mexico, starting in June. Both moves shorten supply chains for US seal and hose makers.
Japanese and European Producers Are Narrowing Their Portfolios
Zeon accelerated its exit from NBR latex in June 2026 while keeping solid NBR and HNBR as core products. Arlanxeo announced in October 2025 its intention to close its Port-Jerome site in France, which makes other synthetic rubbers, citing weak demand and structural losses. Producers are concentrating on grades where they can hold margins.
Chinese Capacity Is Modernizing Rather Than Expanding
The Arlanxeo and TSRC joint venture in Nantong started a new 40,000-tonne NBR unit in January 2025, replacing a 30,000-tonne line that stopped in April 2025, and formally opened the plant in May 2025. No new Chinese NBR plants were announced for 2026, so Chinese capacity growth is slowing to low single digits.
Feedstock Shocks Have Returned
Asian butadiene reached USD 1,320 per tonne on 3 March 2026, an 11-month high, as Middle East conflict disrupted shipping. China sourced about 17% of its 2025 butadiene imports from the Middle East. Shandong butadiene hit RMB 16,000 per tonne on 10 March 2026, the highest since 2017.
Restraints and Challenges
Electric Vehicles Remove Fuel Hoses and Some Oil Seals
Battery electric vehicles have no fuel system and simpler lubrication circuits, which removes some of NBR's largest automotive uses. World vehicle output reached 96.4 million units in 2025, according to OICA production statistics, but rising EV share means NBR content per vehicle slowly declines.
Feedstock Volatility Squeezes Converters
Butadiene and acrylonitrile together account for about 75% to 80% of NBR cost. Chinese acrylonitrile fell to about RMB 7,000 per tonne in January 2026, a five-year low, before butadiene spiked in March. Seal and hose makers with fixed-price contracts struggle to pass these swings through.
Trade Remedies Fragment the Market
China levies anti-dumping duties on NBR from Japan and Korea, extended in November 2024 for five years at rates up to 56.4%. India's DGTR recommended duties of USD 205 to 606 per tonne on imports from China, the EU, Korea and Russia in September 2025. In the US, the USITC voted in 2022 against duties on French NBR, so the US market remains open. These measures force producers to plan supply country by country.
Competing Elastomers Take High-End Uses
Where heat resistance above NBR's range is needed, seal makers move to HNBR, fluoroelastomers or ACM. Arlanxeo's new Therban HNBR plant in Changzhou, opened in February 2026 with 5,000 tonnes of design capacity, shows how producers are investing in the substitute grade.
Growth Drivers
Vehicle Production in Asia Keeps Seal and Gasket Demand Rising
OICA reported that global vehicle production rose 3.9% to 96.4 million units in 2025, with China producing 34.53 million, roughly 36% of the total. Each vehicle, combustion or electric, still uses NBR in gearbox seals, hydraulic brake and steering components, thermal management gaskets and many O-rings. Chinese and Indian car makers are also exporting more vehicles, which lifts demand for NBR at local seal makers such as those supplying BYD, Geely, Tata and Mahindra. Kumho Petrochemical's synthetic rubber segment posted Q2 2026 revenue of KRW 987.1 billion, reflecting firm downstream demand in Asia. We estimate automotive growth in Asia contributes about 1.5 percentage points of the market's annual growth through 2035.
Industrial Machinery and Oilfield Activity Need Oil-Resistant Elastomers
Hydraulic seals in excavators, tractors and factory equipment, along with packers and seals in oil and gas wells, are core NBR uses. Indian infrastructure spending is lifting machinery output, and Apcotex, India's only NBR producer, ran its NBR plant at 100% utilization in its fiscal Q3 2026 and plans new NBR capacity by its fiscal Q1 2028. Middle East and US drilling programs keep demand for high-ACN and carboxylated grades steady. This driver lifts annual growth by roughly 1.1 points, with the strongest effect in India, the Middle East and North America.
Regional Supply Investment Lowers Cost and Lead Time for Buyers
New capacity is arriving close to demand. Arlanxeo and TSRC opened 40,000 tonnes in Nantong in May 2025, Dynasol is adding about 5,000 tonnes at Altamira in Mexico from June 2026, and Lion Elastomers is starting NBR in Texas. Local supply reduces exposure to ocean freight disruption, which was severe in March 2026, and to anti-dumping duties. Buyers that once qualified a single import source can now dual-source regionally, which supports new seal and hose programs. Our model credits regional supply investment with close to 0.6 points of yearly growth, mostly in North America and Asia Pacific (APAC).
Opportunities
NBR Grades for Electric Vehicle Thermal Management
EV battery cooling loops use glycol-based coolants and many seals and gaskets. NBR grades formulated for coolant resistance at moderate temperatures can win these parts at lower cost than HNBR or EPDM-specialty grades.
Domestic Supply for the US Market
With most US NBR imported and no US anti-dumping order in place, local producers such as Lion Elastomers and nearby suppliers like Dynasol can win buyers that want shorter lead times and USMCA-origin material.
Asia Pacific Holds Three-Fifths of NBR Demand While Europe Grows Slowest
Asia Pacific (APAC)
Asia Pacific (APAC) accounts for 59.20% of the nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) market, worth USD 1,622.08 Million in 2025, and grows to USD 2,587.36 Million by 2035 at a 4.78% CAGR. China alone has about 285,000 to 295,000 tonnes of NBR capacity across Lanzhou Petrochemical, Ningbo Shunze, Zhenjiang Nandi, the Arlanxeo-TSRC venture and Nanjing Jinpu Yingsa. Korea's Kumho Petrochemical and LG Chem, Japan's Zeon and ENEOS Materials, and India's Apcotex complete the regional supply base.
Europe
Europe holds 18.10% of 2025 revenue, or USD 495.94 Million, rising to USD 655.58 Million by 2035 at a 2.83% CAGR, the slowest of any region. European demand is weighed down by flat vehicle output and a faster shift to electric vehicles. Arlanxeo produces NBR in France and Versalis runs a 33,000-tonne nameplate NBR line at Porto Torres, Italy.
North America
North America represents 12.40% of the market in 2025, valued at USD 339.76 Million, and reaches USD 494.77 Million by 2035 at a 3.83% CAGR. The US relies mainly on imports, but Lion Elastomers' Texas project and Dynasol's Altamira expansion add regional supply in 2026. There is no US anti-dumping order on NBR after the 2022 USITC vote.
Latin America
Latin America takes 5.20% of 2025 sales at USD 142.48 Million and grows to USD 219.79 Million in 2035, a 4.43% CAGR. Brazil, which maintains anti-dumping duties on NBR from Korea and France, and Mexico, home to Dynasol's Altamira plant, are the two largest markets.
Middle East
The Middle East holds 3.10% of 2025 revenue, worth USD 84.94 Million, and grows to USD 132.29 Million by 2035 at a 4.53% CAGR. Oil and gas seals drive most demand, and Saudi Aramco's ownership of Arlanxeo links the region to a major NBR producer.
Africa
Africa accounts for 2.00% of the 2025 market, or USD 54.80 Million, reaching USD 83.73 Million by 2035 at a 4.33% CAGR. Demand comes from mining equipment seals, footwear and auto parts assembly in South Africa, Morocco and Egypt, almost all supplied by imports.

Primary Interview Insights
How are NBR buyers handling the 2026 price spike?
Public market reports show Chinese NBR prices rising more than 40% from the 2025 low by April 2026 as butadiene surged. Converters on fixed-price contracts have the hardest time passing this through, and we expect more index-linked pricing.
Why are new NBR plants appearing in North America?
Lion Elastomers stated that NBR used in the US is mostly imported, and Dynasol is expanding in Mexico. Shipping disruption in March 2026 made regional supply more attractive to seal and hose makers.
How is the EV transition changing NBR use?
Producer portfolios from Zeon and Arlanxeo show a shift toward seals and HNBR for thermal and transmission systems. Fuel hose volumes are expected to decline as EV share rises, while seal demand holds up.
How do anti-dumping duties affect sourcing?
Duties in China, India and Brazil mean exporters plan supply country by country. Producers with nil or low rates, such as Arlanxeo France and Kumho in India's proposal, gain an edge in those markets.
Will Chinese NBR capacity keep growing?
Chinese capacity rose only about 3.5% in 2025 and no new plants were announced for 2026. Growth is coming from replacement of older lines, such as the Nantong relocation, rather than new sites.
