Glove demand recovery and the 2026 feedstock shock have turned nitrile butadiene rubber latex into a supply-constrained market

Global spending on nitrile butadiene rubber latex reached USD 2.86 Billion in 2025 and is projected at USD 3.04 Billion for 2026 and USD 5.32 Billion by 2035, growing at a 6.40% CAGR. Radial Insights based the estimate on producer capacity, glove output and latex consumption per thousand gloves.

The nitrile butadiene rubber latex market, often called NBR latex or NBL, covers water-based emulsions of acrylonitrile and butadiene copolymer, both carboxylated (XNBR) and non-carboxylated grades. Disposable gloves for examination, surgery, food handling and industrial use take most volume, with smaller amounts going into paper and nonwoven binders, adhesives, coatings, and textile and leather finishing. Solid NBR used in hoses, seals and O-rings is excluded, as are natural rubber latex and synthetic polyisoprene latex.

Demand rebounded after the post-pandemic glove destocking ended. TA Research put global glove demand at about 357 billion pieces in 2024, about 370 billion in 2025 and about 398 billion in 2026, and nitrile now makes up the clear majority of disposable gloves. Kumho Petrochemical alone holds about 946 kilotonnes a year of NB latex capacity in Korea.

Accelerator-free grades, designed for gloves that avoid Type IV chemical allergies, are the fastest growing segment at a 9.40% CAGR, three points above the market. Surgical glove applications follow at 7.90% as hospitals replace natural rubber latex surgical gloves.

Africa is the fastest growing region at a 7.24% CAGR, though from USD 60.1 Million in 2025, while Asia Pacific (APAC) holds 74.20% of revenue because almost all glove dipping lines sit in Malaysia, Thailand, China, Vietnam and Indonesia.

Carboxylated latex leads by type and accelerator-free grades grow at 9.40%

Carboxylated NBR latex is the standard glove grade because the carboxyl groups allow zinc oxide crosslinking and give thin films high tensile strength. It grows at 6.70% in line with glove output. Non-carboxylated latex, used mainly in binders, adhesives and some coatings, grows at 4.80%. Accelerator-free and low-allergen grades grow at 9.40% because health systems in North America and Europe increasingly specify gloves without dithiocarbamate or thiuram accelerators, and producers such as Synthomer and Zeon have built latex systems to make them on standard lines.

Low acrylonitrile grades grow fastest on demand for thinner, softer gloves

Low acrylonitrile latex gives softer films that let glove makers cut weight to around 3 grams per glove while keeping comfort, so it grows at 7.10%. Medium acrylonitrile grades, the general glove workhorse, grow at 6.30%. High acrylonitrile latex, chosen for chemical and oil resistance in industrial gloves and coatings, grows at 5.20%.

Surgical gloves grow at 7.90% while binders lag at 3.90%

Medical examination gloves take the largest share of volume and grow at 6.80% as global glove demand recovers toward the levels Malaysian producers projected for 2027. Surgical gloves grow faster, at 7.90%, as hospitals move away from natural rubber latex to avoid Type I protein allergies. Industrial and food-service gloves grow at 6.10%. Paper and nonwoven binders, at 3.90%, and textile and leather finishing, at 3.50%, follow slower mature industries, while adhesives, sealants and coatings grow at 4.60%.

Electronics and cleanroom users grow faster than general industry

Healthcare remains the main end use and grows at 6.90%. Electronics and cleanroom users grow at 7.40% because semiconductor fab expansion in Taiwan, Korea, Japan, the United States and Europe needs low-particle nitrile gloves of the type made by Kossan and Riverstone. Food processing and hospitality grows at 6.20%, industrial and chemical users at 5.70%, and paper and packaging at 3.80%.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

The Strait of Hormuz disruption created an NBR latex shortage in 2026

After the conflict that began in late February 2026 disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, butadiene prices rose nearly 70%. On 26 March 2026 the Malaysian Rubber Glove Manufacturers Association (MARGMA) described the NBR latex shortage as a crisis and asked the government to give local glove makers priority access to Malaysian latex output. WRP Asia Pacific, a nitrile glove maker with about 30 years of history, announced a wind-down from 15 April 2026, citing petrochemical supply disruption.

Latex producers are earning record spreads

Kumho Petrochemical reported second quarter 2026 operating profit of KRW 339 billion, up about 420%, with synthetic rubber contributing KRW 189.8 billion, and said higher glove plant operating rates lifted NB latex demand and margins. Synthomer reported first half 2026 revenue of GBP 954.3 million, up 6.7%, with Health and Protection volumes up 13.5%, and raised its full-year guidance in August 2026.

US tariffs are moving glove and latex demand from China to Southeast Asia

The US Trade Representative raised Section 301 duties on Chinese medical and surgical rubber gloves to 50% from January 2025 and to 100% from January 2026. China's share of US glove imports fell from 32% in 2024 to about 6% in the first half of 2025, while Malaysia's rose from 44% to 59%. Chinese leader Intco Medical has responded with a plant in Medan, Indonesia, which was expected to start deliveries in the fourth quarter of 2025, moving some NBR latex demand out of China.

Glove prices are being reset by input costs rather than demand spikes

Average glove selling prices peaked at about USD 25 to 27 per 1,000 pieces in May 2026 and were expected to ease to USD 20 to 23 in the third quarter. In September 2026 Intco raised prices by CNY 15 to 40 per carton, and Maybank expected Malaysian prices to move from USD 19 to 20 in September to USD 22 to 23 in October, mainly to cover latex and gas costs. Unlike 2020 and 2021, this price cycle reflects feedstock rather than panic buying.

Restraints and Challenges

Feedstock exposure to butadiene and acrylonitrile

Butadiene can make up more than half of nitrile latex production cost, and acrylonitrile adds most of the rest. Both are petrochemical derivatives whose prices swing with crude oil, cracker operating rates and shipping disruption, as the 2026 Gulf crisis showed. Glove makers with thin margins struggle to pass on sudden cost increases.

Trade policy uncertainty

US duties on Chinese gloves have changed several times since 2024, and the combined effective rate moved between about 80% and 195% in 2025 as reciprocal and other duties were added and removed. The base Section 301 schedule is set out in the USTR four-year review notice. Frequent changes make it harder for latex producers to plan new capacity close to glove customers.

Capacity cycles and overbuilding risk

Producers announced large additions during the pandemic, including Kumho's 236 kilotonne Ulsan line, LG Chem's expansions at Yeosu and Ningbo, and a planned 200 kilotonne plant at Pengerang in Johor by Petronas Chemicals Group and LG Chem, announced in a Petronas Chemicals release. When glove demand fell in 2022 and 2023, latex utilization and prices dropped sharply, and the same risk returns once 2026 supply tightness eases.

Energy and environmental costs at glove plants

Glove dipping lines use large amounts of gas for drying and curing. Malaysian gas prices were set to rise more than 40% from October 2026, and wastewater and emission rules are tightening in Malaysia and Thailand. Higher glove production costs can slow demand growth for latex in price-sensitive markets.

Growth Drivers

Structural growth in disposable glove use per person

Global glove demand rose from about 284 billion pieces in 2019 to about 357 billion in 2024, and TA Research projects about 398 billion in 2026. MARGMA expects global demand to reach 450 billion pieces in 2027, compared with 307.2 billion in 2023. Per capita use in China, India, Southeast Asia, Latin America and Africa is still a fraction of North American and European levels, and health ministries in these regions have kept higher glove use protocols adopted during the pandemic. Each billion nitrile gloves needs roughly 3,000 tonnes of latex solids at today's glove weights, so volume growth translates directly into latex demand. Rising per capita glove use accounts for about +2.3% of the market's annual growth, the largest single contribution.

Nitrile replacing natural rubber latex and vinyl

Hospitals and food processors are moving from natural rubber latex gloves, which carry Type I allergy risk, and from vinyl gloves, which offer weaker barrier protection and contain plasticizers. Surgical gloves are the newest area of substitution, which is why the surgical glove segment grows at 7.90%. Hartalega built its business on nitrile, Top Glove has expanded nitrile lines toward about 72 billion pieces of total glove capacity by the end of FY26, and Sri Trang Gloves in Thailand produces both natural rubber and nitrile gloves. We estimate material substitution lifts nitrile latex growth by roughly 1.5 points per year through 2035.

Supply chain relocation driven by US tariffs and buyer diversification

The US Section 301 rate on Chinese medical gloves doubled to 100% in January 2026, and buyers in Europe are also diversifying away from single-country sourcing. Glove capacity is being added in Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia, often by Chinese producers such as Intco Medical, and each new plant contracts latex from nearby producers including Synthomer in Malaysia, Kumho and LG Chem in Korea, and Nantex and Shin Foong in Taiwan. Relocation adds new latex logistics, inventory and qualification volume rather than simply moving demand, and Malaysian glove exports passed RM 7 billion in the first half of 2026. Tariff-led relocation is worth around 0.7 percentage points of the 6.40% CAGR.

Opportunities

Accelerator-free and bio-attributed latex for premium glove contracts

Health systems in the United States and Europe are writing low-allergen and lower-carbon criteria into glove tenders. Latex producers that offer accelerator-free crosslinking systems or mass balance certified bio-attributed butadiene can secure multi-year supply contracts at premium prices, since the grades need joint qualification with glove makers.

Local latex supply in India and Southeast Asia

India has few glove plants but a large and growing healthcare market. Apcotex Industries entered nitrile latex in 2019 with about 50,000 tonnes a year of wet capacity at Valia, expandable to 80,000 tonnes, and similar local supply could support new glove plants in India, Vietnam and Indonesia that today import latex from Korea and Malaysia.

Asia Pacific controls nearly three quarters of NBR latex demand while emerging regions grow fastest

Demand for nitrile butadiene rubber latex is recorded where gloves and binders are made, not where they are used. That puts most consumption in Asia, even though North America and Europe buy most of the finished gloves.

Asia Pacific (APAC) holds 74.20% because glove dipping lines are concentrated there

Asia Pacific (APAC) accounted for 74.20% of the nitrile butadiene rubber latex market in 2025, about USD 2,122.1 Million, and is forecast to reach USD 4,112.5 Million in 2035 at a 6.84% CAGR. Asia Pacific (APAC) glove makers in Malaysia supply about 45% of global glove demand, and MARGMA reported Malaysian glove exports of about RM 14 billion in 2025. Korea hosts the largest latex plants, including Kumho Petrochemical's 946 kilotonnes a year.

North America grows at 3.74% through binders, coatings and specialty gloves

North America represented 6.80% of revenue in 2025, worth USD 194.5 Million, and should reach USD 280.8 Million by 2035, a 3.74% CAGR. North American latex use is mostly in paper, nonwovens, adhesives and a few specialty glove lines, while finished gloves are imported. The 100% Section 301 duty on Chinese medical gloves from January 2026 has prompted small domestic glove projects that would add some latex demand.

Europe grows at 4.14% on technical latex applications

Europe held 9.60% of the market in 2025, about USD 274.6 Million, rising to USD 411.9 Million by 2035 at a 4.14% CAGR. European demand centers on binders, textile finishing and coated work gloves, and Synthomer and Zeon supply specialty grades. Carbon reporting rules are pushing European buyers toward certified lower-carbon latex.

Latin America grows at 5.94% with local glove and coated glove output

Latin America made up 3.40% of revenue in 2025, about USD 97.2 Million, and is forecast to reach USD 173.2 Million by 2035, a 5.94% CAGR. Brazil and Mexico have coated work glove and paper industries that use NBR latex, and rising hospital glove use supports imports of compounded latex.

Middle East grows at 6.94% as the region adds healthcare capacity

The Middle East accounted for 3.90% of the market in 2025, worth USD 111.5 Million, and is expected to reach USD 218.2 Million by 2035 at a 6.94% CAGR. Gulf hospital expansion and food processing support glove demand, and the 2026 Strait of Hormuz disruption has encouraged governments to consider local supply of medical consumables.

Africa is the fastest growing region at 7.24%

Africa represented 2.10% of revenue in 2025, about USD 60.1 Million, and should reach USD 120.8 Million by 2035, a 7.24% CAGR, the fastest of any region. Africa relies mostly on imported gloves today, so growth comes from small coated glove, paper and adhesive plants plus any new glove dipping capacity in North and East Africa.

Korean producers lead NBR latex capacity while glove makers hold buying power

The nitrile butadiene rubber latex market is concentrated on the supply side, with a few large Asian producers, and concentrated on the demand side, with a handful of Malaysian, Chinese and Thai glove makers buying most of the volume. Competition is based on reliable supply, consistent quality for high-speed dipping lines, and technical support for thinner and low-allergen gloves.

Large-scale Korean and Malaysian latex suppliers

Kumho Petrochemical is the largest NB latex producer, with about 946 kilotonnes a year of capacity in Ulsan, and NB latex is its largest synthetic rubber line. LG Chem operates NB latex plants at Yeosu in Korea and Ningbo in China and partnered with Petronas Chemicals Group on the planned Pengerang plant in Johor. Synthomer runs glove latex plants at Pasir Gudang and Kluang in Malaysia and reports the business within its Health and Protection segment.

Specialty and regional latex producers

Zeon Corporation sells Nipol LX grades for gloves, paper and nonwoven binders and foam, including thin-film glove grades. Nantex Industry in Kaohsiung and Shin Foong Specialty and Applied Materials in Pingtung, Taiwan, supply latex for gloves, thermal paper, adhesives and textiles. Apcotex Industries in India makes nitrile latex for gloves at Valia and Taloja and is the main local supplier for South Asian glove makers.

Glove makers that shape latex demand

Top Glove is the world's largest glove maker and reported FY26 revenue of RM 4.23 billion. Hartalega is a nitrile specialist and posted quarterly revenue of RM 605.75 million in the period to June 2026. Kossan Rubber Industries makes medical and cleanroom gloves and grew glove revenue 53% in its second quarter of 2026. Intco Medical, the largest Chinese nitrile glove maker, expanded capacity to about 70 billion pieces in 2025 and is building outside China.

Thai and smaller glove producers

Sri Trang Gloves in Thailand, Supermax and Riverstone in Malaysia, and a long tail of smaller producers buy latex on shorter contracts and are most exposed to price spikes. The April 2026 wind-down of WRP Asia Pacific shows that smaller glove makers without long-term latex agreements struggle when supply tightens.
