Isobutylene demand for derivatives will add about USD 2.45 billion of value by 2035 as butyl rubber and polyisobutylene capacity grows in Asia

Radial Insights values the global isobutylene market at USD 4.62 billion in 2025, rising to USD 4.82 billion in 2026 and USD 7.07 billion by 2035, a CAGR of 4.35% over 2025-2035. Volume in our scope was a little above 3.3 million tonnes in 2025.

The isobutylene market in this report covers merchant and captive isobutylene (also called isobutene or 2-methylpropene) that is converted into chemical derivatives: butyl and halobutyl rubber, polyisobutylene (PIB), methyl methacrylate, antioxidants, alkylphenols and tert-butyl intermediates. We exclude isobutylene that is reacted directly into MTBE or ETBE for gasoline blending and isobutylene consumed in refinery alkylation, because those volumes trade on fuel economics, not on derivative demand. Isobutylene recovered by cracking MTBE back into high-purity monomer is included.

Tires anchor the demand picture. Every tubeless passenger and truck tire carries an inner liner made from halobutyl rubber, and halobutyl production consumes roughly 97% to 98% isobutylene by weight. That link means tire output in China, India, Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe sets the pace for the largest single application, while PIB for lubricant additives and fuel detergents forms the second pillar.

By segment, bio-based fermentation isobutylene is the fastest-growing production route at an 11.65% CAGR from a very small base, and high-purity isobutylene is the fastest grade at 4.92%. Among applications, tert-butyl derivatives and fine chemicals lead at 5.21%. Asia Pacific (APAC) is both the largest and the fastest-growing region, expanding at 5.10% a year as Chinese butyl rubber and PIB plants add capacity.

Supply is concentrated in integrated C4 complexes run by ExxonMobil, LyondellBasell, TPC Group, Evonik Industries, BASF, Sinopec and Sibur, with newer Chinese producers such as Zhejiang Cenway New Materials adding units that serve both captive butyl lines and the merchant market.

  • Butyl and halobutyl rubber, used in tire inner liners, grows at 4.62% a year through 2035.
  • Zhejiang Cenway's planned site in Jiaxing holds 163.5 ktpa of isobutylene capacity alongside 120 ktpa of butyl rubber after its expansion.
  • ENEOS agreed in August 2026 to acquire TPC Group, whose Houston complex has more than 1.5 billion pounds of combined annual capacity.

High-purity grades and dehydrogenation-based supply are gaining share because tire and lubricant chemistry now demands 99.9% monomer

Growth rates across the isobutylene market differ more by purity and route than by end use. Buyers making halobutyl rubber, PIB and pharmaceutical intermediates increasingly specify monomer above 99.9% purity, which favors MTBE cracking, tert-butyl alcohol dehydration and isobutane dehydrogenation over older raffinate extraction. The table below gives Radial Insights' CAGR for each segment over 2025-2035.

High-purity isobutylene outpaces other grades at 4.92% because halobutyl and PIB plants cannot tolerate n-butene contamination

High-purity isobutylene leads the grade dimension. Cationic polymerization for butyl rubber and conventional PIB is sensitive to linear butenes and oxygenates, so new lines in China and India are designed around 99.9% or better feed. The Jinling Huntsman unit in Nanjing, for example, dehydrates tert-butyl alcohol to produce isobutylene above 99.9% purity, aimed mainly at tire materials. Polymer-grade isobutylene grows at 4.18%, while raffinate-contained isobutylene trails at 3.21% as steam crackers shift toward lighter feeds that yield fewer C4s.

Bio-based fermentation grows fastest at 11.65%, but isobutane dehydrogenation adds the most new tonnes at 5.38%

Isobutane dehydrogenation is the route of choice for large new projects because it decouples isobutylene from cracker operating rates. Licensors such as Lummus with Clariant's CATOFIN catalyst and Honeywell UOP's Oleflex have supplied many of these units, more than half of CATOFIN's 39 selections since 2017 being in China. MTBE cracking grows at 4.06%, supported by licensing deals such as the ExxonMobil and Axens alliance, which offers isobutylene of at least 99.99 wt% purity. Tert-butyl alcohol dehydration grows at 4.71% where propylene oxide plants generate TBA as a co-product. Bio-based fermentation posts the highest rate at 11.65%, yet its outlook is uncertain after Global Bioenergies entered receivership in September 2025, so the route's growth depends on new sponsors.

Tert-butyl derivatives lead applications at 5.21%, with PIB at 4.88% close behind butyl rubber's 4.62%

Tert-butyl derivatives and fine chemicals, including tert-butylamine and pharmaceutical building blocks, grow fastest among applications because pharmaceutical and agrochemical synthesis in India and China is expanding quickly. PIB grows at 4.88%, helped by lubricant additives and new uses such as BASF's battery binder grades. Butyl and halobutyl rubber remain the largest application, growing at 4.62% in line with tubeless tire output. Methyl methacrylate made by the C4 direct oxidation route grows only 3.12% because ethylene and acetone cyanohydrin routes win most new MMA capacity. Antioxidants and alkylphenols grow at 3.94%.

Pharmaceuticals and healthcare grow fastest by end use at 5.46%, while tires and automotive stay the anchor at 4.55%

Pharmaceuticals and healthcare draw on isobutylene for tert-butyl protecting groups and on butyl rubber for vial stoppers, which together lift the segment to a 5.46% CAGR. Adhesives and sealants grow at 4.83% on PIB-based insulating glass and battery sealing. Tires and automotive, the dominant end use, grows at 4.55%, lubricants and fuel additives at 4.31%, and plastics and coatings at 3.37%.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Chinese producers are pairing isobutylene units with halobutyl rubber lines to capture tire liner demand

In January 2025, the European Rubber Journal reported that Zhejiang Cenway New Materials planned to add 70 ktpa of butyl rubber capacity in Jiaxing, taking the site to 120 ktpa, with 74.6 ktpa of bromobutyl and 40.4 ktpa of chlorobutyl. By October 2025 the company had opened a public consultation on the Yuan 170.5 million program and confirmed that site isobutylene capacity would stay at 163.5 ktpa, with part used internally and the rest sold to third parties. This integrated model, where one site makes monomer and polymer, is spreading across eastern China and puts merchant pressure on importers in Asia Pacific.

C4 processors in North America are consolidating under owners with Asian demand links

TPC Group said in January 2025 that it had raised crude C4 processing capacity in Houston by 25% compared with the prior year's peak, through butadiene debottlenecking, more hydrotreating and a third-party tolling agreement. In August 2026, ENEOS Holdings signed an agreement to acquire TPC Holdings, the parent of TPC Group, with closing expected in October 2026. Houston produces isobutylene, di-isobutylene and polyisobutylene alongside butadiene, and TPC reported 2025 net sales of USD 1.511 billion. The deal gives a Japanese refiner direct exposure to US Gulf Coast C4 derivatives.

Polyisobutylene is moving into battery and electronics uses beyond lubricants

BASF launched Oppanol N PLUS in June 2026, a PIB binder for next-generation electric vehicle batteries, including solid-state cells, presented at The Battery Show Europe in Stuttgart. BASF has produced polyisobutene since 1938 and marked 95 years of PIB work in 2026. Earlier, BASF said it would lift medium-molecular-weight PIB capacity at Ludwigshafen by 25% by the first half of 2025. New battery and sealant uses widen the PIB customer base beyond the lubricant additive makers that take around 60% of PIB volume.

Bio-based isobutylene has hit a financing wall

Global Bioenergies, the French developer of fermentation-based isobutene, entered receivership on 29 September 2025, with four asset offers pending. In November 2025 the court review was postponed to 24 November, with a new offer deadline of 12 November. The setback slows the timeline for renewable isobutylene in cosmetics and specialty fuels, although our forecast still assumes small commercial volumes after 2030 from other sponsors.

Restraints and Challenges

Feedstock exposure to cracker and refinery economics keeps supply volatile

Much of the world's isobutylene comes from C4 streams that depend on steam cracker and fluid catalytic cracking run rates. When ethane-based crackers dominate new capacity, mixed C4 output per tonne of ethylene falls sharply, tightening raffinate supply. Producers that rely on raffinate extraction face periods of short supply and price spikes, which is one reason the raffinate extraction route grows only 2.84% a year in our model.

MTBE policy shifts can strand upstream assets

Many isobutylene units sit inside MTBE complexes. Where MTBE gasoline use declines, as it did in the United States after state bans, operators either export MTBE or crack it back to isobutylene. ExxonMobil and Axens market a decomposition process that yields isobutylene of at least 99.99 wt% purity (Axens release), but each conversion requires new capital and a buyer for the extra monomer.

Butyl rubber overcapacity in Asia compresses monomer margins

Sibur's Nizhnekamsk site reached 200 ktpa of halobutyl capacity after a RUB 8 billion upgrade completed in December 2023, and the group says it accounts for 25% of global butyl and halobutyl output. Combined with Chinese additions, this pushes butyl prices down and limits how much isobutylene sellers can pass through to tire makers.

Safety and logistics constraints raise the cost of moving a flammable gas

Isobutylene is a liquefied flammable gas that moves by pressurized rail car, pipeline or ISO tank. TPC Group's Port Neches butadiene unit has been idle since explosions and a fire in November 2019, a reminder of the operating risk in C4 processing. Insurance, permitting and transport rules add cost, so most demand is met by pipeline-linked or on-site supply, limiting merchant trade.

Growth Drivers

Tubeless tire output in Asia lifts halobutyl demand and adds about +1.4% to annual growth

Every tubeless tire depends on a halobutyl inner liner to hold air pressure, and liner compounds typically use bromobutyl or chlorobutyl as the main polymer. Global tire output is concentrated in China, India, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia, where radialization of truck and bus tires continues to convert tube-type tires to tubeless designs that require more halobutyl per unit. Zhejiang Cenway's planned expansion to 74.6 ktpa of bromobutyl and 40.4 ktpa of chlorobutyl, and Sibur's 200 ktpa halobutyl site that exports to China, Thailand, Vietnam and India, show how producers are lining up capacity behind this demand. Because isobutylene makes up about 97% to 98% of butyl rubber by weight, each 100 kt of new halobutyl output draws close to 100 kt of monomer. Radial Insights estimates the tire liner channel contributes roughly 1.4 percentage points of the 4.35% market CAGR over 2025-2035, more than any other single driver. Tire makers such as Bridgestone, Michelin and Apollo Tyres buy halobutyl from Arlanxeo, ExxonMobil, Sibur and Reliance Sibur Elastomers, which links their production plans directly to isobutylene offtake.

Lubricant and fuel additive formulators need more PIB, worth close to 1.1 points of the growth rate

Polyisobutylene is the starting point for succinimide dispersants used in engine oils and for PIB amine fuel detergents. About 60% of PIB goes to lubricants, where it acts as a base stock, dispersant intermediate and viscosity index improver. Closures of API Group I base oil refineries that produced bright stock have pushed blenders toward PIB as one of the few drop-in substitutes. BASF's planned 25% capacity increase at Ludwigshafen, targeted for the first half of 2025, and TPC Group's PIB production in Houston illustrate the investment response. Longer drain intervals and tighter emission rules raise dispersant treat rates per liter even as the passenger car fleet electrifies. We attribute about 1.1 points of annual market growth to PIB demand from additive makers such as Lubrizol, Infineum, Chevron Oronite and Afton Chemical, with heavy-duty diesel and marine lubricants offsetting slower gasoline engine oil volumes.

Integrated C4 investment in China and the Gulf brings new merchant volume, lifting growth by roughly 0.8 points

New isobutane dehydrogenation units and MTBE complexes in China give producers the option to sell isobutylene as a monomer rather than locking it into fuel ethers. Clariant and Lummus were selected in March 2024 to license a CATOFIN unit for Huizhou Boeko Materials designed for 550,000 tonnes a year of net isobutylene, initially for MTBE. As China's gasoline demand plateaus with EV adoption, operators of such units can redirect part of their output to high-purity grades for butyl rubber, PIB and tert-butyl chemicals. Jinling Huntsman's 60 kt high-purity unit in Nanjing, expected to generate about Yuan 590 million in annual sales, is an example of this pivot. Radial Insights sees this flexible supply adding around 0.8 points of annual growth through new derivative projects that would not proceed without nearby monomer.

Opportunities

High-purity isobutylene for pharmaceuticals and electronics

Pharmaceutical makers use isobutylene to install tert-butyl protecting groups and to make tert-butylamine, and electronics makers use high-purity grades in specialty polymers. These buyers pay premiums over polymer grade, and suppliers with 99.99% capability from MTBE decomposition can win contracts in India and China where API production is expanding.

Battery binders and sealants open a new PIB channel

BASF's Oppanol N PLUS launch in June 2026 shows that PIB can serve as a chemically inert, elastic binder in cathodes, anodes and electrolytes. If solid-state batteries scale after 2030, this outlet could become a meaningful source of incremental isobutylene demand in Europe, Korea and Japan.

Asia Pacific holds close to half of isobutylene demand and adds the most value through 2035 on Chinese butyl and PIB expansions

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) accounted for 46.20% of the isobutylene market in 2025, worth USD 2134.44 million. The APAC market is projected to reach USD 3510.03 million by 2035, growing at 5.10% a year, the fastest of any region. China hosts most new capacity, including Zhejiang Cenway's 163.5 ktpa isobutylene site in Jiaxing and the 60 kt Jinling Huntsman unit in Nanjing, while India adds demand through Reliance Sibur Elastomers' halobutyl plant at Jamnagar. Japan and Korea contribute PIB and specialty demand, and ENEOS's purchase of TPC Group gives a Japanese company a direct stake in US C4 supply.

North America

North America held a 21.40% share in 2025, valued at USD 988.68 million. North American demand is forecast to reach USD 1408.16 million in 2035 at a 3.60% CAGR. The US Gulf Coast concentrates supply at ExxonMobil's Baytown and Baton Rouge sites, LyondellBasell's Channelview complex and TPC Group's Houston plant, where crude C4 processing rose 25% in early 2025. Butyl rubber for tire liners and pharmaceutical stoppers, plus PIB for lubricant additives, make up most regional use.

Europe

Europe represented 19.60% of 2025 revenue, or USD 905.52 million, and is expected to reach USD 1205.18 million by 2035, a 2.90% CAGR. European growth is the slowest because cracker closures reduce C4 supply and tire production shifts east. Evonik's C4 network in Marl and Antwerp, BASF's PIB plant in Ludwigshafen and Arlanxeo's butyl rubber operations in Antwerp form the core of European demand, and BASF's 2026 battery binder launch points to new specialty uses.

Latin America

Latin America held 4.80% of the market in 2025, about USD 221.76 million, and is forecast at USD 334.63 million by 2035, growing 4.20% a year. Brazil's petrochemical complexes produce MTBE and some isobutylene derivatives, while Mexico's tire and lubricant blending sectors import most of their butyl rubber and PIB from the US Gulf Coast.

Middle East

The Middle East accounted for 6.10% in 2025, worth USD 281.82 million, and is projected to reach USD 476.85 million by 2035 at a 5.40% CAGR, the second-fastest regional rate. Saudi Arabia's integrated complexes produce MTBE at scale, and Saudi Aramco owns Arlanxeo outright, giving the region a strategic interest in butyl rubber and the option to divert isobutylene from fuel ethers into polymers.

Africa

Africa held 1.90% of 2025 demand, about USD 87.78 million, and is expected to reach USD 137.63 million by 2035 at 4.60% a year. South Africa's synthetic fuels and chemicals industry and North African refineries supply small volumes, while tire plants in South Africa, Egypt and Morocco import halobutyl rubber.

Integrated C4 majors control most supply, while Chinese newcomers and specialty derivative makers compete for the merchant market

The isobutylene market is moderately concentrated. A handful of companies with large C4 processing, MTBE or isobutane dehydrogenation assets supply most of the world's monomer, often consuming it captively in butyl rubber, PIB or tert-butyl chemicals. Merchant trade is smaller and regional, because isobutylene moves best by pipeline. Competitive advantage comes from feedstock access, purity capability, and integration into high-value derivatives.

Integrated oil and chemical majors

ExxonMobil is one of the largest butyl rubber producers and also licenses MTBE decomposition technology for high-purity isobutylene through its alliance with Axens. LyondellBasell produces isobutylene and tert-butyl alcohol as co-products of its propylene oxide process in Texas and the Netherlands, supplying derivatives such as ETBE and high-purity isobutylene. Sinopec operates C4 complexes across China and holds a stake in Jinling Huntsman's high-purity isobutylene project. Reliance Industries runs the Jamnagar butyl and halobutyl complex in partnership with Sibur, serving Indian tire makers.

C4 specialists and derivative producers

TPC Group processes crude C4 in Houston into butadiene, isobutylene, di-isobutylene, butene-1 and PIB, and will become part of ENEOS Holdings once the 2026 deal closes. Evonik Industries runs a C4 network in Marl and Antwerp producing isobutene, MTBE, tert-butanol and di-isobutene for lubricants and specialty chemicals. BASF focuses on PIB under the Oppanol and Glissopal brands, with plants in Ludwigshafen and a joint venture with Petronas in Malaysia.

Butyl rubber producers

Arlanxeo, wholly owned by Saudi Aramco, operates butyl rubber plants in Belgium, Canada and Singapore and is a major halobutyl supplier to global tire makers. Sibur claims about 25% of global butyl and halobutyl output from Nizhnekamsk and Togliatti. Zhejiang Cenway New Materials is the fastest-growing Chinese entrant, integrating 163.5 ktpa of isobutylene with a planned 120 ktpa of butyl rubber in Jiaxing, plus a separate 100 ktpa plant in Panjin.

Technology licensors and emerging routes

Huntsman Corporation participates through its Jinling Huntsman joint venture in Nanjing, which dehydrates tert-butyl alcohol into 99.9% isobutylene. Licensors including Lummus Technology, Clariant and Honeywell UOP shape new supply by selling dehydrogenation technology, while bio-based developers have struggled to finance commercial plants.
