EPDM Sealing Strips Hold Their Ground Against Thermoplastics as Electric Vehicles and Rail Lift Demand
At USD 8.74 Billion in 2025, the global EPDM sealing strips market is set to reach USD 9.12 Billion in 2026 and USD 13.34 Billion by 2035, expanding at a 4.32% CAGR as vehicle output recovers in Asia and quieter electric cars need better door and glass sealing.
The EPDM sealing strips market covers extruded dense, sponge and co-extruded profiles made mainly from ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber, including flocked and slip-coated strips, sold for automotive doors, bodies, glass runs, trunks and hoods, and for building windows, doors and curtain walls, rail cars, buses, appliances and industrial enclosures. We exclude molded EPDM gaskets and O-rings, thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) and PVC profiles, silicone seals, and the raw EPDM polymer itself.
By propulsion, battery electric vehicles are the fastest segment at 8.10% a year, while seals for internal combustion vehicles grow at just 1.90% as their share of production falls. Battery enclosure and charging port seals are the fastest automotive application at 7.80%. Rail and transportation equipment leads end-use growth at 5.60%.
Asia Pacific (APAC) holds 46.80% of 2025 revenue and is the fastest-growing region at 5.08% a year. China produced 34.53 million motor vehicles in 2025 according to OICA, including 16.626 million new energy vehicles, and Chinese OEMs are now a major source of new sealing contracts for global suppliers.
The main threat to EPDM sealing strips is substitution by lighter thermoplastic seals, especially in glass run channels. Suppliers are responding with thinner, lighter EPDM profiles, hybrid EPDM and TPV designs and sponge grades with better compression set, while holding EPDM in door and body seals where its weathering and recovery remain hard to match.

Flocked, Coated and Co-Extruded Profiles Lead Product Growth
Flocked and coated strips grow at 5.20% a year because glass runs and door belt-line seals on quieter electric cars need low-friction, low-noise surfaces. Dense-sponge co-extruded profiles grow at 4.90%, since a single co-extrusion replaces two or three separate parts. Sponge EPDM strips grow at 4.40% and dense EPDM strips at 3.60%; the latter face the most direct pressure from TPV and PVC in simple building and appliance profiles.
Rail and Construction Outpace Automotive in End Use
Rail and transportation equipment grows at 5.60%, driven by metro, high-speed and regional train programs in China, India, Europe and the Middle East that need fire-rated EPDM door and window seals. Building and construction grows at 5.10% as energy-efficiency rules for windows and facades tighten. Automotive, still the largest user, grows at 4.00%, and appliances and industrial equipment at 3.90%.
Battery Enclosure Seals Are the Fastest Automotive Application
Battery enclosure and charging port seals grow at 7.80% a year as battery packs need long, continuous seals that resist water and dust over the life of the vehicle. Door and body seals grow at 4.30% and trunk, hood and liftgate seals at 4.00%. Glass run channels grow slowest at 3.10% because they are the first application to switch to thermoplastics; Cooper Standard's FlexiCore all-thermoplastic body seal entered production with a global OEM in 2026.
Battery Electric Vehicles Carry Higher Sealing Content
Battery electric vehicles grow at 8.10% and hybrids at 6.40%. Without engine noise, cabin noise from wind and road becomes more noticeable, so automakers specify more sealing lines, secondary door seals and acoustic glass runs. Internal combustion vehicles grow at only 1.90% as their production share declines.
Aftermarket Grows Faster Than OEM
Aftermarket sales grow at 4.90% against 4.20% for OEM supply, as an aging global vehicle fleet and building renovation projects create steady replacement demand for door, window and trunk seals.

Market Dynamics
Market Trends
Chinese Automakers Become the Main Source of New Sealing Business
Cooper Standard reported in February 2026 that 51% of its 2025 net new business awards, which totaled USD 297.9 million, came from Chinese OEMs, and 74% were on battery electric and full hybrid programs. OICA data published in April 2026 show China built 34.53 million motor vehicles in 2025, including 16.626 million new energy vehicles, up 29%. Sealing suppliers are shifting engineering and tooling resources toward Chinese platforms, both in China and in their export plants.
Thermoplastic Seals Win Selected Applications
In July 2026 Cooper Standard won a Golden Scale award for FlexiCore, an all-thermoplastic body seal up to 44% lighter than conventional designs, which entered production with a global OEM in 2026. In October 2026 GoldSeal-SaarGummi India opened a plant in Chennai that marks its entry into TPV glass run channels. EPDM keeps the larger share of body and door seals, but glass runs and some belt-line seals are moving to thermoplastics.
Capacity Shifts Away From Shrinking Japanese Output in China
Toyoda Gosei said in 2025 that it would close its Tianjin weatherstrip subsidiary, Toyoda Gosei Star Light, because Japanese automaker output in China is falling, with production stopping in December 2025 and liquidation in December 2026. Its global business still grew: the company reported in May 2026 that fiscal 2025-26 revenue rose 8.2% to about USD 7.2 billion. Suppliers are rebalancing plants toward Chinese-brand customers, India and North America.
EPDM Supply Chains Are Being Reorganized
In April 2026 ARLANXEO became the exclusive marketer of EPDM produced by Rabigh Refining and Petrochemical in Saudi Arabia, effective February 2026, under the Keltan KSA brand. In April 2025 Biesterfeld signed to distribute ExxonMobil's Vistalon EPDM in Europe, Turkey and Africa. Versalis shut its Brindisi steam cracker in March 2025, and ARLANXEO announced plans to stop operations at its Port Jerome synthetic rubber site in France, shifting more European EPDM supply to imports.
Restraints and Challenges
Margin Pressure at Sealing Suppliers
Cooper Standard's full-year 2025 results showed sales of USD 2.74 billion and a net loss of USD 4.2 million, with fourth-quarter Sealing Systems EBITDA falling to USD 32.1 million from USD 40.2 million. Standard Profil, described as Europe's second-largest automotive sealing maker with about EUR 350 million in sales, needed a court-sanctioned creditor scheme in September 2025. Thin margins limit investment in new extrusion lines.
Trade Measures on EPDM and Auto Parts
China's Ministry of Commerce opened a sunset review in December 2025 of its anti-dumping duties on EPDM from the United States, the European Union and South Korea, in place since December 2020, with a ruling expected around December 2026, according to the US International Trade Administration. In the United States, a September 2025 Commerce Department rule set up a process to add automobile parts to Section 232 tariffs. Both add cost and uncertainty for seal makers that import polymer or export finished strips.
Weak European Construction
Semperit reported in March 2026 that 2025 revenue fell 2.1% to EUR 662.4 million and said its profile business continues to be affected by the weak construction industry. Eurostat data show EU construction output rose only 0.5% in 2025, which holds back demand for window, door and facade seals in Europe.
Thermoplastic Substitution
TPV seals are lighter, recyclable and need no vulcanization, which lowers energy use in extrusion. Cooper Standard's FlexiCore claims up to 44% weight reduction. Each OEM platform that moves a glass run or belt-line seal to TPV removes EPDM volume for the life of that model.
Growth Drivers
Electrified Vehicles Raise Sealing Content per Car
The IEA's Global EV Outlook 2026 reports that electric car sales passed 20 million in 2025, up 20%, about one in four cars sold worldwide, and forecasts about 23 million in 2026. Without engine noise to mask it, wind and road noise become the main complaint in electric cars, so automakers such as BYD, Tesla, Volkswagen, Hyundai and Geely specify secondary door seals, acoustic glass runs and additional body seals. Battery packs add long enclosure seals, and charging ports need their own weather seals. Cooper Standard reported that 74% of its 2025 net new business awards were on battery electric and full hybrid programs. We estimate that higher sealing content on electrified vehicles contributes about 1.5 percentage points of the market's 4.32% annual growth through 2035.
Vehicle Production Recovery in Asia and Emerging Markets
OICA reports that world motor vehicle production rose 3.9% to 96.4 million units in 2025, with China at 34.53 million while Europe fell 0.8% to 17.2 million and the Americas fell 2.1% to 18.74 million. Growth is concentrated in China, India and Southeast Asia, where Hyundai, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Mahindra and Chinese brands are adding capacity. GoldSeal-SaarGummi India opened a Chennai plant in October 2026 and is investing more than INR 32 crore at Daman, with its Sanand plant being upgraded to supply Hyundai. We expect production growth in Asia and emerging markets to add about 1.1 points to yearly market growth.
Energy-Efficiency Rules for Buildings and New Rail Fleets
Building codes in the European Union, China and North America set tighter limits on air leakage and heat loss through windows, doors and facades, and EPDM gaskets and sealing strips are the standard choice for aluminum and PVC window systems and curtain walls because of their weathering and ozone resistance. Rail operators and builders such as Alstom, Siemens Mobility, CRRC and Stadler also specify fire-rated EPDM seals for doors and windows on new metro and regional trains. Trelleborg's April 2025 purchase of National Gummi, a Swedish maker of extruded rubber profiles and gaskets for construction, industrial and automotive uses with 2024 sales of SEK 150 million, shows how suppliers are building scale in these segments. Construction and rail together account for roughly +0.9% of annual market growth in our forecast.
Opportunities
Lightweight and Recyclable EPDM Designs
Suppliers that cut profile weight through microcellular sponge, thinner walls and metal-free carriers can defend EPDM against TPV. Devulcanization and EPDM recycling programs also give automakers a path to recycled content targets without abandoning rubber.
Battery Pack and Charging Infrastructure Seals
Battery enclosure seals grow at 7.80% a year in our model. Seal makers with long continuous extrusion and joining capability can also supply charging stations, energy storage cabinets and electrical enclosures, which need the same weather and fire performance.
Asia Pacific (APAC) Holds Nearly Half of Demand and Grows Fastest on Chinese and Indian Vehicle Output
Asia Pacific (APAC)
Asia Pacific (APAC) made up 46.80% of global EPDM sealing strip revenue in 2025, or USD 4.09 Billion. We expect Asia Pacific (APAC) to reach USD 6.71 Billion by 2035 at a CAGR of 5.08%. China produced 34.53 million motor vehicles in 2025, and Chinese suppliers such as Zhongding, Guihang and Minth compete with Toyoda Gosei, Nishikawa, Kinugawa and Hwaseung. India adds new capacity, including GoldSeal-SaarGummi's Chennai plant opened in October 2026.
Europe
Europe made up 24.10% of global EPDM sealing strip revenue in 2025, or USD 2.11 Billion. We expect Europe to reach USD 2.88 Billion by 2035 at a CAGR of 3.18%. European vehicle production fell 0.8% to 17.2 million units in 2025, according to OICA, and construction output was nearly flat. Hutchinson, Standard Profil, Cooper Standard, SaarGummi, Semperit and Trelleborg are major suppliers, and local EPDM supply is shrinking after cracker and plant closures.
North America
North America made up 19.30% of global EPDM sealing strip revenue in 2025, or USD 1.69 Billion. We expect North America to reach USD 2.40 Billion by 2035 at a CAGR of 3.58%. The United States produced 10.24 million vehicles in 2025, and the Americas as a whole fell 2.1%. Cooper Standard and Henniges Automotive are based in North America, and Section 232 auto parts tariff rules are pushing more sealing production into the United States and Mexico.
Latin America
Latin America made up 4.60% of global EPDM sealing strip revenue in 2025, or USD 402.04 Million. We expect Latin America to reach USD 617.22 Million by 2035 at a CAGR of 4.38%. Brazil and Mexico dominate demand in Latin America, with Mexico's export-oriented vehicle plants supplying the US market. Global sealing suppliers serve both countries from local extrusion plants.
Middle East
Middle East made up 3.20% of global EPDM sealing strip revenue in 2025, or USD 279.68 Million. We expect Middle East to reach USD 450.39 Million by 2035 at a CAGR of 4.88%. Saudi Arabia is building vehicle assembly capacity and large rail and construction projects, and ARLANXEO's marketing of Saudi-made Keltan KSA EPDM from February 2026 adds a regional polymer source for the Middle East.
Africa
Africa made up 2.00% of global EPDM sealing strip revenue in 2025, or USD 174.80 Million. We expect Africa to reach USD 284.19 Million by 2035 at a CAGR of 4.98%. South Africa and Morocco host vehicle assembly plants for global automakers, and Morocco's automotive cluster around Tangier and Kenitra drives most sealing demand in Africa.
