Glove Latex Keeps XNBR Growing Faster Than Conventional Nitrile Rubber
Global sales of Carboxylated Nitrile Rubber (XNBR) reached USD 2.84 Billion in 2025 and are forecast at USD 2.99 Billion in 2026 and USD 4.79 Billion by 2035, a CAGR of 5.36%.
XNBR is acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber with a small share of carboxylic acid monomer, usually acrylic or methacrylic acid, built into the polymer chain. The acid groups allow ionic crosslinking with zinc oxide, which gives XNBR higher tensile strength, tear resistance and abrasion resistance than standard NBR at the same oil resistance. Those properties make it the base polymer of thin disposable nitrile gloves and of wear-critical rolls, seals and belts.
Radial Insights covers carboxylated nitrile sold as latex, solid bale and powder, including compounded masterbatch where the XNBR content is declared. The study excludes conventional non-carboxylated NBR, hydrogenated nitrile rubber (HNBR), nitrile blends with PVC and finished goods such as gloves and seals. Market values reflect producer selling prices, and all figures in this report are stated in USD Billion unless a regional figure is given in USD Million.
Medical Examination Gloves is the fastest-growing application at 6.08% a year from 2025 to 2035, and the Electronics and Semiconductors end use posts the highest CAGR of any end use at 6.34%, driven by cleanroom gloves. Industrial uses such as seals, belts and hoses grow at roughly 4% a year, closer to automotive and machinery output.
Asia Pacific (APAC) is the largest and fastest-growing region at 5.82% a year, because most glove dipping lines and the largest latex plants sit in Malaysia, Thailand, China, Vietnam and South Korea. US tariffs on Chinese medical gloves, raised from 50% to 100% in January 2026, are shifting where that latex is consumed rather than how much is used.

Market Trends
Tariffs Are Redrawing the Glove Supply Map
US Section 301 tariffs on Chinese medical gloves rose to 50% in January 2025 and to 100% in January 2026. China's share of US glove imports fell from 32% in 2024 to 6% in the first half of 2025, while Malaysia's rose from 44% to 59%, according to TA Research. Chinese producers have responded by moving lines to Indonesia and Vietnam, which keeps XNBR latex demand inside Asia but changes which latex suppliers win the volume.
Glove Volumes Recover While Prices Stay Low
Average nitrile glove prices fell from a peak of USD 25 to 27 per 1,000 pieces to about USD 19 to 20, The Edge Malaysia reported in August 2026. Hartalega's net profit rose to RM 70.03 million in the quarter to June 30, 2026 from RM 12.61 million a year earlier, showing that volume is returning even though margins remain below pre-pandemic levels. Latex suppliers have seen the same pattern: Synthomer said glove activity improved in the fourth quarter of 2025.
Bio-Based and Accelerator-Free Latex Is Entering Qualification
Synthomer disclosed in April 2026 a partnership with Neste and PCS to make bio-based nitrile latexes for the glove industry, using renewable feedstock in place of part of the fossil butadiene and acrylonitrile. Glove makers are also qualifying accelerator-free XNBR formulations that crosslink through the carboxyl groups with zinc oxide or covalent crosslinkers, removing the sulfur accelerators linked to Type IV allergy.
Specialty Gloves Are Taking a Larger Share of Latex
Kossan plans to raise cleanroom glove capacity from 300 to 400 million pieces a year to 800 million by its 2027 financial year, and Riverstone runs about 10 billion pieces of capacity across Malaysia, Thailand and China. These grades need low-ion, low-particle XNBR latex with tight carboxyl content control, which favors established suppliers such as Synthomer, Kumho Petrochemical and LG Chem.
Restraints and Challenges
Glove Overcapacity Keeps Latex Margins Thin
Analysts at CGS International expect glove supply to exceed demand until 2027 at the earliest. Synthomer's Health and Protection volumes fell 17.3% in 2025 as glove makers adjusted to US tariff changes, and the company said unit margins remain well below pre-pandemic levels. Thin margins limit how much latex suppliers can invest in new carboxylated capacity.
Butadiene and Acrylonitrile Costs Are Volatile
The blended cost of nitrile and butadiene stands about 10% above pre-Covid levels, according to CGS analysts cited by The Edge Malaysia. Both monomers follow crude oil and cracker operating rates, and glove makers resist passing increases to hospital buyers on fixed-price tenders.
Trade Policy Can Reverse Quickly
US tariffs on Chinese medical gloves rose to 100% in January 2026, but analysts warn Malaysian producers may struggle against lower-cost Chinese supply if tariffs ease. A policy reversal would move dipping volume back to China and shift latex demand toward Chinese producers such as Lanzhou Petrochemical, changing supplier shares without changing total use.
Slower Engineered Rubber Demand
Solid XNBR for seals, belts and printing rolls grows at only about 4% a year because those markets track industrial output. The International Rubber Study Group reports synthetic rubber demand in line with vehicle and machinery production, and electrification reduces the number of fuel and oil seals per vehicle, which caps the High (Above 34%) acrylonitrile segment.
Growth Drivers
Rising Glove Consumption per Patient and Worker
TA Research estimates global glove demand grew from 284 billion pieces in 2019 to 357 billion in 2024, with 370 billion expected in 2025 and 398 billion in 2026. Nitrile has replaced natural rubber latex in most hospital and food-handling uses because it avoids latex protein allergy, and carboxylated grades let glove makers cut film thickness to around 3 grams per glove while keeping tensile strength. Top Glove expects total capacity of about 72 billion pieces by the end of its 2026 financial year with a further 10% expansion planned for 2027. Radial Insights estimates glove volume growth adds about +2.1% a year to the Carboxylated Nitrile Rubber (XNBR) market, the biggest single contributor to its 5.36% CAGR.
Tariff-Driven Capacity Shifts Need New Latex Supply Chains
The move from 50% to 100% tariffs on Chinese medical gloves in January 2026 has pushed Chinese glove makers to build lines in Indonesia and Vietnam and has encouraged onshore glove production in the United States. Synthomer reported in April 2026 that it is supporting a US partner developing onshore nitrile latex and glove capacity through licensing and manufacturing know-how. Each new dipping line needs qualified XNBR latex and local technical service, which favors producers with application labs near customers. We estimate this relocation adds roughly 0.5 percentage points of annual growth through 2030 as new lines fill.
Cleanroom and Specialty Gloves Lift Value per Tonne
Semiconductor fabs, pharmaceutical plants and battery cell factories need low-particle gloves with stable ion content. Kenanga estimates specialty glove prices run 60% to 80% above generic medical gloves, and Kossan is doubling cleanroom capacity to 800 million pieces by 2027. These gloves use premium XNBR latex with tighter carboxyl and gel specifications, so value grows faster than tonnage. Our model credits this mix shift with close to +0.4% of yearly value growth, concentrated in Asia Pacific and North America.
Opportunities
Sustainable Latex for Hospital Tenders
Hospital groups in Europe and North America now score suppliers on carbon footprint. Bio-attributed XNBR latex, such as the grades Synthomer is developing with Neste and PCS, gives glove makers a way to win tenders without changing dipping equipment.
Onshore Supply in Tariff-Protected Markets
Producers that build or license latex capacity close to new glove plants in the United States, Indonesia, Vietnam and India can lock in multi-year contracts with buyers seeking tariff-safe supply chains.
