Subscription-driven express tunnels are reshaping a USD 37 billion service market

Drivers and fleets spent USD 37.60 Billion on professional car washing worldwide in 2025, and the Car Wash Services market rises to USD 39.52 Billion in 2026 and USD 61.83 Billion by 2035, a 5.10% CAGR.

Radial Insights defines the Car Wash Services market as consumer and fleet spending on professional vehicle washing at conveyor tunnels, in-bay automatic washes, self-service bays, hand wash outlets and mobile wash providers, including add-on services such as tire shine, wheel cleaning, waxes, ceramic coatings and interior vacuuming sold at the wash. It excludes the sale of wash equipment and chemicals to operators, stand-alone auto detailing studios, and car care products bought for home use.

The industry is moving from single, impulse washes to monthly memberships. Mister Car Wash, the largest US operator, ended 2025 with about 2.3 million Unlimited Wash Club members, and members produced 79% of its wash sales in the fourth quarter. Private equity has funded hundreds of new express tunnels a year, and consolidation continued in 2025 and 2026 with the sale of Driven Brands' US car wash business for USD 385 million and a roughly USD 3.1 billion take-private offer for Mister Car Wash.

Subscription memberships are the fastest-growing pricing model at an 8.30% CAGR, and Africa is the fastest-growing region at a 6.90% CAGR, from a small base. North America remains the largest region.

Our forecast assumes the global car parc keeps growing, membership adoption spreads from the United States to Europe, Asia and Latin America, and water rules push drivers away from driveway washing toward professional sites that recycle water. The main risks are over-building of express tunnels in some US metros, wage costs and weaker discretionary spending.

Express exterior tunnels lead wash-type growth at 7.20%

Express exterior tunnels move a car through in about three minutes with free self-serve vacuums, so they need few staff and can handle high volume. They grow at 7.20% because almost all new US construction is in this format and operators in Europe, Australia and the Gulf are copying it. In-bay automatic washes, the most common format at fuel stations in Europe and the United States, grow at 3.80%. Full-service tunnels, which add interior cleaning by staff, grow at only 2.60% as labor costs rise. Self-service bays grow at 2.20%. Hand wash and mobile services grow at 5.60%, led by Asia, Latin America and Africa, where labor is cheaper and app-based mobile washers are spreading.

Subscription memberships grow at 8.30%, nearly three times single washes

Single washes are still the largest pricing model worldwide but grow at only 2.90%. Subscription memberships grow at 8.30% because they give operators predictable revenue and give drivers unlimited washes for roughly the price of two single visits. At Mister Car Wash, members drove 79% of wash sales in the fourth quarter of 2025, up from 75% a year earlier. Fleet contracts for rental companies, ride-hailing drivers and delivery vans grow at 5.40%.

SUVs and pickups grow at 5.90% on larger vehicles and premium packages

Passenger cars, including sedans and hatchbacks, grow at 4.90%. SUVs and pickups grow faster at 5.90% because they make up a rising share of new sales in North America, China, the Middle East and Australia, and their owners buy more premium packages such as ceramic coatings and wheel and tire treatments. Commercial vehicles, including vans, buses and trucks served by truck washes, grow at 4.20%.

Stand-alone sites grow at 5.80% as operators build dedicated tunnels

Stand-alone sites, mostly new express tunnels, grow at 5.80%. Washes at fuel stations and convenience stores grow at 3.70%; they remain the most common format in Europe but face slower fuel traffic as EVs spread. Washes at dealerships and service centers, often included with maintenance visits, grow at 4.50%.

Market Dynamics

Market Trends

Private equity consolidation reaches the largest operators

Leonard Green and Partners agreed in February 2026 to take Mister Car Wash private in a deal valued at about USD 3.1 billion, or USD 7.00 per share in cash. A year earlier, in February 2025, Driven Brands agreed to sell its US car wash business to Express Wash Operations, the operator of Whistle Express, for USD 385 million, and the deal closed in April 2025. Roughly 200 US companies now run 10 or more sites each, with more than 6,000 locations between them, according to the International Carwash Association.

Memberships and license plate recognition replace the pay station

Operators now sell monthly plans through apps and use license plate recognition cameras to open the gate for members. This cuts staff, raises visit frequency and lets operators price by location and time of day. Mister Car Wash ended 2025 with about 2.3 million members, up 7% from a year earlier.

Operators keep adding sites through greenfield builds and tuck-in deals

Mister Car Wash opened 29 greenfield locations in 2025 and acquired 5 more, reaching 548 sites at year-end. In October 2025 it bought five Whistle Express sites in Lubbock, Texas, raising its count in that city from four to nine. Regional chains such as Quick Quack, WhiteWater Express and Express Wash Concepts are also buying single sites and small chains to fill out their maps.

Equipment makers report steady demand for new tunnels

WashTec, the German maker of wash systems, reported preliminary 2025 revenue of about EUR 499 million in February 2026, its highest ever and up about 5% from EUR 476.9 million, with EBIT up about 8% to EUR 49 million. Record equipment sales show that operators are still investing in new and refurbished sites.

Restraints and Challenges

Over-building of express tunnels in some metros

The International Carwash Association estimates that more than 500 new car wash sites are built each year in the United States. In some fast-growing Sun Belt cities, new express tunnels now open within a short drive of each other, and operators compete on price for members. This pressure on same-store sales is one reason the largest operators grow revenue in single digits even while adding sites.

Labor and wage costs

Car washes employ more than 220,000 retail workers in North America, according to International Carwash Association industry data. Rising minimum wages raise costs most for full-service and hand wash formats, which explains their slower growth.

Water and environmental rules

Car washes must manage wastewater containing detergents, oils and metals from brake and tire wear. Stricter discharge permits and drought rules in water-stressed regions require reclaim systems, which add capital cost. At the same time, these rules favor professional washes over driveway washing, which sends untreated runoff to storm drains.

Discretionary spending and weather swings

Single-wash volumes fall quickly in rainy months or when household budgets tighten. Public operators note in their SEC filings that weather and consumer spending affect results, which is why they push memberships to smooth revenue.

Growth Drivers

Membership economics lift visit frequency and lifetime value

A member who pays a flat monthly fee typically washes several times more often than a single-wash customer, and the operator gets predictable revenue it can borrow against. At Mister Car Wash, Unlimited Wash Club members reached about 2.3 million at the end of 2025, up 147 thousand in a year, and they accounted for 79% of wash sales in the fourth quarter. Zips, Tidal Wave, Quick Quack and Spotless Brands all run similar programs. We estimate membership adoption adds about +1.6% to the annual growth rate of the global market through 2035, with the biggest gains outside the United States, where memberships are still rare.

Private equity capital funds new express tunnels

Express tunnels cost several million dollars each to build, and private equity has supplied most of that money. Leonard Green's roughly USD 3.1 billion offer for Mister Car Wash in February 2026 and Express Wash Operations' USD 385 million purchase of Driven Brands' US car wash business in 2025 show that large investors still see long-term value in the sector. The International Carwash Association counts more than 500 new US sites a year. New supply brings washing to areas that had none and raises total spending, contributing close to one and a half points, about +1.4%, to the market's yearly growth in our model.

Growing and aging car parc, led by SUVs and pickups

The global vehicle fleet keeps growing in Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and Africa, and SUVs and pickups take a larger share of new sales almost everywhere. Larger vehicles are harder to wash at home and their owners buy more premium services, such as ceramic sealants and tire and wheel treatments. In China, India and Southeast Asia, rising car ownership in large cities with little space for home washing is creating new demand for tunnels and mobile wash apps. We estimate fleet growth and the shift to larger vehicles account for roughly +1.2% of annual market growth, and they are the main reason Asia Pacific grows at 6.20%.

Opportunities

Bringing the express membership model to Europe and Asia

Europe has about 69,000 car wash sites, but only around 8,000 are conveyor tunnels, according to ICA estimates, and most washing happens at fuel station roll-overs paid per visit. Operators that bring US-style express tunnels and memberships to Europe, Japan, Australia and the Gulf states can win share. Driven Brands' IMO Car Wash network in Europe and Australia is one example.

Add-on services and EV-friendly washing

Ceramic coatings, tire shine, wheel cleaning and interior detailing raise revenue per visit. EVs need gentle washing for sensors and cameras, which favors professional sites with soft-touch equipment and spot-free rinse. Equipment makers such as WashTec and Sonny's are designing systems for these needs.

North America leads by spending while Asia, Africa and the Middle East grow fastest

North America

North America held a 42.00% share of the Car Wash Services market in 2025, worth USD 15.79 Billion, and North American spending reaches USD 24.29 Billion by 2035 at a 4.40% CAGR. The United States has about 17,500 conveyor washes, 29,000 in-bay automatic washes and 16,250 self-service washes, according to ICA estimates. Nearly 80% of US drivers now use professional washes most often, up from about 48% in 1994.

Asia Pacific (APAC)

Asia Pacific (APAC) accounted for a 31.00% share in 2025, equal to USD 11.66 Billion, and Asia Pacific spending climbs to USD 21.27 Billion by 2035 at a 6.20% CAGR. Japan has a dense network of automatic washes at fuel stations, while China and India are adding tunnels and app-based mobile washers in large cities. Australia's car wash industry generates about A$1.5 billion in retail sales from roughly 1,950 sites.

Europe

Europe held a 16.50% share in 2025, worth USD 6.20 Billion, and European spending reaches USD 9.10 Billion by 2035 at a 3.90% CAGR, the slowest of any region. The EU has an estimated 69,000 sites, of which about 50,000 are in-bay automatic washes, and EU retail sales are around EUR 5 billion. Express tunnel memberships are spreading from the UK, Germany and the Netherlands.

Latin America

Latin America accounted for a 5.20% share in 2025, worth USD 1.96 Billion, and Latin American spending grows to USD 3.53 Billion by 2035 at a 6.10% CAGR. Hand wash outlets dominate in Brazil and Mexico, but the first express tunnels with memberships are opening in large Latin American cities.

Middle East

The Middle East held a 3.50% share in 2025, worth USD 1.32 Billion, and Middle East spending reaches USD 2.54 Billion by 2035 at a 6.80% CAGR. Dust and sand mean drivers in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates wash often, and water-saving rules favor professional sites with reclaim systems.

Africa

Africa held a 1.80% share in 2025, equal to USD 0.68 Billion, and African spending rises to USD 1.32 Billion by 2035 at a 6.90% CAGR, the fastest regional rate. Informal hand washes dominate in Nigeria and Kenya, while South Africa has a growing number of fuel station automatic washes and water-wise formats.

Recent Developments

  • In February 2026, Mister Car Wash reported FY2025 net revenue of USD 1,051.7 million, up 6%, and agreed to be taken private by Leonard Green and Partners in a deal valued at about USD 3.1 billion.

  • In February 2026, WashTec reported preliminary 2025 revenue of about EUR 499 million, its highest ever, with EBIT up about 8% to EUR 49 million.

  • In October 2025, Mister Car Wash acquired five Whistle Express locations in Lubbock, Texas, raising its local count from four to nine.

  • In April 2025, Driven Brands completed the sale of its US car wash business to Express Wash Operations for USD 385 million.

  • In February 2025, Driven Brands announced an agreement to divest its US car wash business, the Take 5 Car Wash chain, to the operator of Whistle Express.

A fragmented market where a few dozen chains are consolidating the US express segment

The Car Wash Services market remains fragmented worldwide. About 3,000 US companies run only one or two stores, while about 200 companies run 10 or more sites with more than 6,000 locations between them, according to the International Carwash Association. Outside the United States, fuel retailers and independent owners still run most sites. Competition is local, based on site location, wash quality, price and membership value.

Large US express operators

Mister Car Wash is the largest US operator by locations, with 548 sites and about 2.3 million members at the end of 2025, and is moving to private ownership under Leonard Green. Zips Car Wash, Tidal Wave Auto Spa, Quick Quack Car Wash and Spotless Brands each run hundreds of express tunnels, mostly in the South, Midwest and West. Express Wash Operations, which runs Whistle Express, became much larger after buying Driven Brands' former Take 5 Car Wash sites in 2025.

Fast-growing regional chains

WhiteWater Express Car Wash, El Car Wash, Express Wash Concepts, Splash Car Wash and Club Car Wash grow through new builds and tuck-in deals in their home regions. WhiteWater, for example, bought nine Sparkle Express sites to enter Georgia, and Quick Quack bought Suds Brothers in Redlands, California. These chains compete for the same real estate and the same members as the national leaders.

International networks

Driven Brands kept its international car wash business, IMO Car Wash, which operates sites in Europe and Australia. In Japan and much of Europe, fuel station chains run large networks of in-bay automatic washes. In China, India and Southeast Asia, the market is led by independent operators and app-based mobile wash start-ups.

Equipment and technology suppliers

WashTec AG of Germany is the largest wash equipment supplier, with about EUR 499 million in 2025 revenue, and Sonny's Enterprises is the leading US tunnel equipment maker. Their systems, chemicals and software for memberships and license plate recognition shape what operators can offer. Strong equipment orders signal where the next wave of capacity will come from.
