A modern radial tire looks like a single piece of rubber, but it is actually a precision assembly of 20 to 30 distinct components, each with its own compound, geometry, and job. Understanding this anatomy explains almost everything about tire behavior: why a tire grips, how it holds air, where it fails, and why manufacturing it demands such tight process control. This guide walks through every major component and subassembly, organized the way engineers think about the product: from the crown that touches the road, through the casing that carries the load, down to the bead that grips the wheel.
The tread is the tire's working surface: the patterned, wear-resistant compound that generates grip, channels water, and determines mileage, noise, and rolling resistance. Directly beneath it sits the undertread, a transition layer of cooler-running compound that bonds the tread to the belts and manages heat buildup in the crown.
Below the undertread lies the belt package, typically two crossed layers of brass-coated steel cord that stiffen the crown, stabilize the footprint, and protect the casing from punctures. Because the cut ends of steel belts are a classic starting point for separations, small wedges of rubber called belt edge strips (belt wedges) cushion the belt edges and spread the shear stresses concentrated there. Over the top of the whole package runs the cap ply, a spirally wound layer of nylon or hybrid cord that restrains the belts against centrifugal growth at high speed; it is the component that makes modern H, V, and higher speed ratings possible.
The body ply / carcass is the structural heart of the tire: one or more layers of rubber-coated polyester, rayon, or steel cords running bead to bead. The carcass carries the inflation pressure and the vehicle load, defines the tire's shape, and in truck tires determines whether the casing can be retreaded several times. Wrapped around its inside surface is the inner liner, a nearly air-impermeable layer of halobutyl rubber that acts as the built-in inner tube of a tubeless tire; its quality decides how slowly a tire loses pressure over the months.
The sidewall covers the casing flanks with a flexible, weather-resistant compound engineered to survive millions of flex cycles, ozone exposure, and curb scuffs. It also carries all mandated markings, from size and load index to DOT codes, and in run-flat tires it is reinforced to carry the vehicle with no air at all.
